Ya just can't make this stuff up, sadly it's all too real.

Portland school sees racism in peanut butter and jelly sandwiches

Saw this a couple of months ago, how stupid can they get?

Seems that the principal just used a PB and J sandwich as a discussion example. I can see how it'd work: precisely because it's taken as an innocuous example. The class might well even conclude that it's innocuous.

However, I can certainly see how this issue of PB and J sandwiches might end up destroying Western culture as we know it. Thanks for bringing it to our attention here, FDD.

DomKen -> RE: Ladies and Gents I give you PB&J the Racist Sandwich! (11/21/2013 8:26:30 PM)

The original source never quotes the prinipcal calling a sandwich racist. That was added by the reporter. The underlying story seems to be about understanding cultural differences that may function as barriers to reaching students which I'm sure everyone would agree is a bad thing.

So we should avoid anything with which immigrants might be unfamiliar?
And if they avoid things any other culture might not be familiar with that leaves us with ........nothing.

The original source also has her allowing a drum line club for black and Hispanic boys that excludes white boys and all girls.

That's different, white's won't feel excluded just because they aren't allowed to participate. (sarcasm font)

Actually the original source says this:
quote:

Gutierrez denies that any students were turned away from the drum corps,

The club may be aimed at the minority students but no one was turned away.

"We called and got Ben Velderman, a communications specialist who wrote the story."
"Velderman said he doesn’t know if the principal actually called the sandwiches racist -- which the headline claims."

"Gutierrez declined to speak with PolitiFact Oregon, but Portland Public Schools spokesman Matt Shelby answered questions on her behalf. He said she did not use the word "racist" in a meeting with staff cited in the news article. He said that the "subtle language of racism" phrase included in the story was the reporter’s wording, and not hers. The point of the example, Shelby said, was to encourage teachers to widen their range of food samples to include more students."

Yeah, how dare teachers try to use classroom examples that more of their students will actually understand and relate to, instead of ones that are outside their experience. Clearly, that's PC-ness gone mad!

Or maybe it's just teachers trying to help their kids learn better and feel more included. If the majority of your students are Hispanic immigrants, why not say "Jose has three tortillas" sometimes instead of "John has 3 PB&J sandwiches"?

Yachtie -> RE: Ladies and Gents I give you PB&J the Racist Sandwich! (11/22/2013 5:15:56 AM)

fr

from the OP link -

"What is racist about a child’s lunch, one might ask? Peanut butter and jelly, of course! You racists probably even use black currant jelly sometimes. On white bread," Twitchy added.

Sarcastic as it is, that's about the extent of discourse these days. Seems about right.

FFS Really????.... I guess the shit going on on the right of the aisle REALLY needs smothering to bring this up as a "HOW DARE THEY " moment.
LMAO

thishereboi -> RE: Ladies and Gents I give you PB&J the Racist Sandwich! (11/22/2013 5:27:49 AM)

I honestly think some people spend their life looking for things to be offended about. I remember when they wanted to stop real estate agents from saying the phrase "master bedroom" because it might upset people. I wonder what they will say about this site.

But on a positive note there were no politicians involved so maybe we can skip the usual r vs l bs in this thread. (and no that isn't a invitation to start just an observation)

Good point. I always assumed that they had sandwiches all over the world, but I guess I was wrong. Now I have to wonder if they have sandwiches all over in Portland and how many of the students are not already familiar with them. Now I can understand if the kids had just gotten to this country but my guess is most of them were born here and are well acquainted with american food.

That'll sure help assimilitation. Better yet, do it in Spanish. I mean, who the fuck needs English speaking Americans?

I know, you just couldn't resist proving me wrong. I have to admit I really didn't think it would get brought up this quick and you would not have been the one I would have expected to do it but there ya go.
I guess the hatred toward the right is just to strong to resist sometimes.
