This like many things is subject to the rules of the house. I personally object to my slaves using the term "MY" because an owned object cannot own anything.

Why? That seems incredibly narrowing. I undestand that an owned person's belongings belong, by default, to the person who owns them. However, that doesn't negate the bond of ownership between the two original things.

Uh...that's unclear.

Master A owns slave B. Slave B owns slave C. Master A of -course- owns slave C, through his bond to B. However, B has his/her own bond of ownership with C. By the same token, I own my cat's toys. However, so does my cat.

Well I do not define myself as a slave. Some do. I don't. However, Doug is MY Dom.
Why is he MY Dom? Because yes, he will tell you he owns me. However, I also in turn own him.
Regardless we are in a partnership. I have feelings and so does he. It is a mutual understanding in which we live.

If you'd ask him ( which may have) why I call him mine. He will say because he is proud of me and he loves me.

Maybe you're taking the "possession" part of the word a bit too literally.

No not at all. I am a very rituialistic Master I find that using such terms remind not only the slave but the Master as well each of their positions in the relationship.

There are plenty of cases where your snippet of definition doesn't apply to to your model:

my neighbor
my street
my boss
my church... and many more.

None of the above denote any ownership, but instead show some manner of association or connection. I suggest upgrading to a dictionary with more complete definitions (Merriam-Webster's Unabridged is a good one).

~stef

stef I did use an updated dictionary. http://www.dictionary.com

Yes they do show ownership by using MY. Which if that is what you wish that is fine, you are or where missing the whole point of the thread.

This is what I do and why. What do you do and why.

I say "my Master" quite frankly, because it's easier and my Master doesn't care if I say "my Master."  I certainly do not need reminding that he owns me, I feel it with every breath.  He certainly doesn't need reminding that he is my Master; he is well aware.  I think he would think it a little silly if I went around referring to him all the time as "He who owns me" or "the Master who owns me".  I don't own him any more than I own "my desk" at work, which technically "my company" owns and I am just allowed to use it....but then it's not really "my company" either, it is "the company in which I work."

"My laptop" is actually "the laptop owned by the company in which I work, which I am allowed to use for the job I do"

See...it can get carried away.

Everyone in "my world" (or should I say everyone who knows I am owned) knows very well just who owns whom in the life I share with him.

What if I said "My Owner?"  heh...can one own one's owner?

I'm not actually trying to ridicule, just having some fun.  It's been quite a day

To him, I always say "Master."  I actually do sometimes just refer to  him as "Master" when speaking to others.  I also refer to him as "Mr. Wonderful."  Or "He who must be obeyed"  or "Love" or....  Anyway, if it makes sense to you to have your slaves refer to you in such a manner, that of course is your right.

I NEVER let anybody say MY, I agree it is NEVER 'my master". I am addressed as the Master Who Owns me, they are conditioned to think that way. To say my is not bad, only not well thought out..

Hello, Sir!  Long time no see!  :) I went ahead to dictionary dot com and checked it out. The word "my" according to the page was as follows:  my  (m)
adj. The possessive form of I.
  1. Used as a modifier before a noun: my boots; my accomplishments.
  2. Used preceding various forms of polite, affectionate, or familiar address: My friend, you are so right.
  3. Used in various interjectional phrases: My word! My goodness!

I believe that definition # 2 fits well.  It denotes familiarity in this case, not necessarily ownership or possession.  I work from home.  The people who buy from me are my customers.  Its just a familiar way to show that they buy from me specifically and not just anyone. I have known girls who have to refer to their owners as "the owner" or "the master" but it has confused me in the past because sometimes I don't know who they are talking about.  The usage of the term "my" in that case is just an indicator that she is owned by this specific man. When I  say "my owner" or "my master" I do so only to let others know (without becoming too wordy in an attempt to explain every time I mention him) that I am speaking of the man who owns me in particular - not any other owner or master out there.   My owner hasn't had a problem with it so far but he can be pretty unpredictable and one never knows when he's going to up and change the rules!  *grins* I hope all is well with your household!  Well wishes to you and yours, Cav's ally

There are some who are quite happy to hear their property address them with the possessive form of "my Such and Such"... in the middle ages, it was M'Lord/M'Lady, my Leige, etc... and denoted recognition of one individual as being the territorial owner. Personally, I've most often seen this in the "lifestyle" where a slave or servant is required to address -all- Free individuals as Lord, Master, Mistress, Lady, or whatever. The use of "my" enables the slave to differentiate between any given free individual and his or her particular, territorial owner. In that framework, it makes perfect sense.

Personally, I prefer to be addressed by the title given by my community, which is currently Da'Avatar, or by Ma'am by those who are of a submissive preference, who have approached me for information or consideration, and whom I have not accepted responsibility for. For those whom I have accepted responsibility, I am addressed as Mahgi.

My mate, also a dominant in our household, prefers to be addressed by those whom she has not taken responsibility for by -her- community title, which is Da'Chandalar, or by Ma'am and as Mistress by those whom she has taken responsibility for.

When I'm speaking 'about' Himself.. I generally refer to him as.. Himself or Master. To his face, I call him Sir (usually), Master in high, sometimes Daddy if he is doing a cathartic pain session with me ... or.. I 'babe' him a lot. It's a Valley girl thing. ;) What I call him doesn't matter.. he owns me 24/7 and he doesn't care as long as I'm respectful.. and I'm always respectful. Sometimes I refer to him as my husband.. when I remember that we're actually married.

When I'm on Top.. it is always when I'm doing a pure S/m scene and have the sadist out in full bloom and I prefer to be called Mz. Wicked (my scene name). If someone wants to call me Ma'am during an S/m scene for their own headspace, that's cool, too. I don't really care. I'd rather they were screaming than be able to talk anyway.

i always refer to my MissTress as just that ... for She is mine and i am Hers.  In vanilla land i refer to Her as my Partner.  But i am most definitely Her sub ... not Her slave, Her sub.

i also referred to my first Master and Mistress in this way too - despite never being collared to them.

To me it tells everyone that W/we are together.  And although W/we may play with others, it is She who i will go home with, and She is the One i share my life with.

In absolute literal terms you are correct, however I'm not that anal about such things and it is absolutely clear what is ment. The intent far outweighs any dictionary definitions. For me at least, but yours belong to you, get them to address you whatever way makes you happy.

My Dom.  MINE.  And I don't share.

In my (admittedly limited) experience, subs are way more fiercely territorial than their Doms/Masters.

lol Sir Daniel,
First of All Sir, I can see where you are coming from.
"My" does indeed refer to someone who owns something and whether a slave or sub owns anything I think can only be known in their own mind and their Dominants.
The point is, language is a parculiar thing, and using "my", comes naturally to everyone and is perhaps a hard word to break to take on your point of view.
I congratulate you however on this hornet's nest you have potentially developed, as I see, it is very easy to be flamed here by people taking the wrong point on things and frome what I have seen so far, many haven't "got it".

I have been addressed by several names.

Seeing as I have a child I didn't feel it best to raise any red flags by having a sub call me Mistress. I let the boys choose what feels most endearing to them, whether it be Princess, Goddess, or Ma'am. I have been called Maistresse as well.
One indian sub I knew ran two interesting names by me, and they stuck;  Malika, and Parizad...One Means Angel I believe and  the other means Princess or Owner.

Only time I allow Mistress is if the child is nowhere around.
He has heard me called Princess before and questioned it, and I told him, I am the Princess, it's a way for them to show their respect for me. He was fine with it, and has on a few occasions called me The Princess--lol.
As for being called "MY" I have no problem with it, as the sub is designating me as His and his alone, so I'm fine with it.

Sir, I was somewhat surprised at the brevity in the original definition you posted, and since I like dictionaries ( I use Merriam-Webster (www.m-w.com )) I followed the link you said you used.  While I did not find the definition you originally posted there... I did find this one:
  1. Used as a modifier before a noun: my boots; my accomplishments.
  2. Used preceding various forms of polite, affectionate, or familiar address: My friend...

While it's quite probable you will find umbrage with 'familiar', the one I serve (someday) would not find a problem with my being either polite nor affectionate.

There are some who refuse to use 'I' when they chat here.  Apparently one can be so totally 'owned' as not to have identy?  This girl finds such ritual tedious and more than a little difficult to read.   Still, that we are all different shows up in the richly colored fabric of life.  Personally, I appreciated your question and the spirit with which you stick to it; the responses have been interesting, to boot!

I address them as Master or Mistress though i will say their names when speaking about them to each other or others. I do put my Master or my Mistress or my pair into posts or emails. And often when emailing Scooter st work i start the email with Master mine, then it is a term of affection, nothing more Not stating i own them only that we belong to each other.

Surely you don't introduce " your Lord" to your boss, or your grandma, or your children? Is this another example of how people fail to integrate BDSM into their everyday life?

Actually i do as a matter of fact, with the exception of very small grandchildren, then i simply say my pair, when they are old enough to ask my par of what, i'll explain. My owners introduce me to most as their girl, a few as their slave.

Their family is quite used to hearing me say yes Master or Mistress. I have yelled Master across a parking lot to direct him to a space and once lost them in an antique mall and walked up and down the isles calling out Master and Mistress. About the only exception to this is at Masters work, he simply refers to Jewel and i as the girls or says my wife (Jewel) and my girl. Lol, they kind of accept that he has two of us, the rest they just are not ready for
