It's not a mistake, it's an elementary trick of dishonest argument known as the straw man. You misrepresent your opponent's position as being something patently absurd, so that you can knock it down without effort: but all you have knocked down is the straw man you set up yourself. However, if you do it with enough conviction, your allies will be convinced that you have achieved something noteworthy. And since your opponents are not going to make fools of themselves defending the absurd proposition you have attributed to them, you can take their silence as proof that you have floored them with your devastating rhetoric.

Childish, but it makes them feel better.

Of course, the absolutel master of this has been O'bama himself. Time and time and time again.

"Some have said we must make the false choice between our ideals and our security". Who? Who said that. No one says that - certainly no one in mainstream politics.

W, Cheney and every one who supported torture made that argument. Obama rejected it as did every true patriot.
