This is not only unnecessary; it's laughable.

Where are all the animal rights activists?

No link my friend.'

Edited to mention that I found it. It was the same color and it's 5 am. Yes, we concern ourselves a bit too much with that stuff.

Yes, I read about this, and I have to ask a very important question.

Does the idiot who came up with this plan realize that snakes are not scavengers, they eat live prey?

I have a sneaking suspicion that this person may be the same guy that thought buying jet engines from General Dynamics that needed proprietary tools that cost a couple of grand was a good idea.

From another source"

"Brown tree snakes cause problems by creating outages on the Guam Power Authority power grid with damage reaching $1 million to $4 million annually, according USDA documents."

http://phys.org/news/2013-12-guam-toxic-mice-invasive-snakes.html#jCp

If we look at it from that perspective it makes sense. I would prefer they just kill the snakes than spend 4 million annually to keep repairing the power grid(s).

Obviously you've never owned them.... Snakes do eat dead prey.

I had a snake that would only eat mice after I flicked their heads and stunned them (the mice; not the snakes)

Brown tree snakes are not only damaging the Guam power grid, they get into aircraft and damage the planes, including US military aircraft, and they are wiping out the endangered native birds of Guam. I have no idea if this plan will work but guys who know more about these snakes think it might.

Millions just to make repairs to the power, and treat children and small pets that are poisoned by the snakes.

Untold billions in the loss to the ecosphere from the eradication of the tropical birds, and the resulting imbalance to pollination and insects.

Damage in the trillions when the snakes keep using those air and water craft to stowaway to Hawaii in sufficient numbers, and unimaginable when they reach the mainland.

This has gone on for a long time.  Traps don't work.  Catching them in the jungle canopy at night doesn't work. They have no predators and no competition.

Let's hope this plan does work as designed.

It is not only necessary, it is crucial.  Do some research on the problem, it isn't a joke.

ETA:  Serious animal rights activists understand all too well what needs to be done to stop invasive species.

That notion apparently orginated with those whose 'expertise' about snakes came from overfeeding a ball python under a heat lamp in a glass container, and who 'got off' on watching the live food being consumed.

These snakes are nocturnal, venomous, and arboreal (thus the need to keep the bait snagged up in the canopy).
They eat cold blooded lizards or warm blooded animals dead or alive. People on Guam find them in the garbage going after the blood in used tampons, and chicken innards.

Again, this is no joke, do a little more research on the real problem, and this last ditch effort when everything else has failed.

The FIRST program that should get cut is the F35 Can't-Fighter program.

Unless someone leads with that turkey, they're full of shit.

This species never should have been in Guam in the first place. They are indigenous to the South Pacific and were accidentally transported to Guam. They have very few natural predators in that area an as a result the population has skyrocketed.

The snakes have killed off the tropical birds that live in the treetops, I don't know if whatever is left alive will be harmed by the Tylenol or not.

It's funny how often these "laughable" "money-wasting" programs turn out to be necessary and/or money-saving, isn't it?

I remember some of the GOP primary candidates in '08 talking about how they would get rid of the Department of Energy to save money - clearly they were not aware that one of its main functions is to safeguard our nuclear resources.
