Status: offline 		We saw it yesterday. It was great. As usual, Jackson took some liberties with the story, but not too many.

You didn't get enough Beorn, but you get some fantastic Smaug. I soooooooo want to go see it again, although Himself teased me relentless about the spiders.

He loves me squealing and terrorized. LOL

Status: offline 		YUCK i hate spiders i am an arachnophobe i cant even watch the movie Arachnophobia it just makes my skin crawl and yes my wife thinks that is just hilarious. But guess who they call when a spider needs killing because if i see it its DEAD.
but back on topic i was hoping that the movie would do Smaug justice and from all i have heard he is fantastic.

Status: offline 		I did enjoy part one. They kept fairly close to the story, and of course the special effects are magnificent. Reasons to spring for the great big screen.

We will probably buy all three at some point to watch at home. But the firs time we'll watch in the theater. Smaug is ssssssssso worth it.

Status: offline 		Saw it at the midnight showing when it opened. There are a LOT of liberties taken with the story. The first one had very little that wasn't in the book. This one had lots.

That being said: Smaug is exactly what a dragon should look like.

I enjoyed it immensely.

Status: offline 		I've not read any of Tolkien's books, so I've nothing to compare as far as book versus movies goes. But I've absolutely LOVED every LOTR movie and the first part of The Hobbit. And Smaug is high on my list of must see movies once I get past the financial money pit that is Christmas

Status: offline 		I really didn't like the first one. I liked the ones the Lord of the Rings series a lot. I just felt that the first movie in this series was a snore. I'm not sure I'll be motivated enough to see the rest of these.

I could think of better ways to spend a few hours, fishing, playing with my dogs and great nephew, reading the book which the "artistic" license of the screen writer has screwed seven ways from sunday, and that is just reading reviews and talking to friends. A dwarf with an axe stuck in his head? Give me a break.

Me and my lady are hanging out the day before, we watched part 1 to refresh ourselves, and I decided to predict what would happen in the second part. We'd seen the trailers and knew that Legolas and their new elf chicka are going to be running around. So I said, "Right, so, first they're going to duplicate the Lothlorien arrow circle scene with Legolas instead of Haldir. Tauriel is going to end up saving the dwarves in the forest, then she's going to fall for Kili because he's the most attractive dwarf, but she's already involved with Legolas. She's going to end up leaving with them in the barrels sequences; Legolas will follow because LOVE TRIANGLE."

...

I was joking. JOKING.

I called it down to the godsdamned fucking dwarf.




Really liked how they did Smaug. Bilbo's descent into uncomfortableness and the subtle leanings on the beginning of his transformation with the ring while contracted with his heroic character arc... it's really well done. It's spot on. Mirkwood made me very pleased. Jerk elf dad is a total jerk elf dad, Legolas is just a jerk elf in a bunch of other jerk elves, just he happens to be an existing character. So very pleased that they kept the drunk elves. Loved the hints at the elven caste system not being so hot, the subtle hints that elves and orcs aren't so different... lots of gray going on, no "true heroes", pretty much everyone in the movie is a jerk with ulterior motives. The overwhelming theme of greed is present in a way I thought they missed in the first movie... this one hits it home better.



But...

It still feels like a 3 hour long trailer for Lord of the Rings.

Everything is a callback. EVERYTHING. I plan on seeing it again once I get paid. Because it is seriously eye candy and worthy of the big screen. Especially Smaug.
