I find it interesting when seemingly intelligent and articulate people seem to not be able to find within themselves one ounce of common sense when it comes to WIITWD. Often times on here and in real life circumstances I encounter people who seem to be in the normal range of the intelligence scale...if not above average...but who seem to lose all sense of direction or equillibrium when it comes to matters that pertain to this lifestyle. It's almost as though there is some disconnect that happens in their brain that prohibits rational thinking when they become involved with another kinky person. It seems to me that most of the questions and issues that people have can be answered with "use common sense". Even those who are new should understand that basic concept. Any thoughts on why this seems to occur? Do people just get so caught up in it that their judgements get clouded?

Well, I have to admit to being one person who lost my personal compass at one time and did things I would at more rational times consider only an idiot would do. Sometimes even the most clear sighted of people can't see the wood for the trees. Not that I am saying I am one of the most clear sighted of people.

I think it might be the fantasy aspect of it all. I'm not sure, but when I read some erotica, I wonder if the author actually expects me to believe it. Even more disturbing is that I think some do. When we talk of pain, etc....hey people, pain HURTS...that's why it's called pain. The same with the no limits issue and safe words. I think some just get so wrapped up in the fantasy aspect of WIITWD that they fail to use what common sense they have.

Well of course there is a disconnect, it's called an erection. To my way of thinking, expecting rational behavior from horny people displays a lack of common sense.

To answer, yes, sometimes I think people do get too caught up with their desires they stop using the "big" head. However, one thing I have learned in spending ALOT of time in a major university town, intelligence does not always mean they have common sense. There are times that doctors or professors come thru our place of business and leave me totally astonished at their lack of such or comprehension of what seems to me the most simple of concepts. Yet I find out later they are supremely intelligent and knowledgable in an area I would never even begin to understand. One wrote a book that was quite impressive but could not for the life of him get the concept of how to physically construct the book. Another had no idea the cost of postage or..........this blew my mind..........how and where to place it on the envelope. Something that most people with an IQ many many points less than his, would know without thought.....go figure. edited to add........AND WHAT RICH SAID!!![:D]

There are completely different ways of looking at everything. The language is different. Polite behavior is different. Clothing is different. "Toys" are different. With the addition of on-line porn playing with extreme fantasy and making it seem like the norm within WIIWD, people come in confused. There's no guide book to read and know how to find out what is real and what is fake. There are few people who will bother with a newbie who is full of questions and trying to find their way in the morass of information and misinformation that is out there. People stumble and fall in the process of learning because they don't know where using their "common" sense is appropriate and where it is not. Some of what I learned as "common courtesy" is considered dangerous behavior in the community. Knowing where to draw the line can be difficult. Then there's the fact that different places have different rules. Different Dom/mes /Master have different requirements that go directly contrary to what others require. Coming into this is very confusing. While it seems that using common sense and common courtesy should be easy enough, I've learned that it isn't always the best way to go.

Hello mistoferin, No, I don't find it that mystifying overall and I have to say that I've seen the same thing. Being intelligent and articulate isn't a great indicator of how people will behave...especially when they've discovered a new religion that speaks to parts of themselves that they haven't entirely understood. Often, I think, people immerse themselves in it, get terribly absorbed by it, the ideas, the parts that relate to their fantasies and other people's expressed experiences. It can seem larger than life and BECOME larger than life. I think that sometimes people's entire reality gets clouded or maybe suspended .. for a while. I know that I don't apply common sense in EVERY situation.......I don't WANT to in every situation and in some, I'm unable to...especially if the I'm too close to the trees to see the wood. If I want something badly enough, I'll kid myself awhile. That might not be palatable, but it's the truth. I have a Master that has no qualms whatsoever in pointing out the difference between what I want and what's good or best for me and the result of choosing either. That helps......lol agirl
