The U.S. has attitudes towards prostitution that are archaic at best. I'm reminded of a quote from a bar girl in Olongapo, "My job is to entertain customers. If I decide to entertain a customer on my back, it's my decision." The attitude impressed me and I ended up paying her "bar fine" several afternoons to use her as an interpreter and companion for exploring the P.I. I thought it was hooey that she was working the bar to pay for classes but I really had a WTF moment a year later. A year later, back home in Hawaii, I got a call from her. She finished her degree and was employed by American Express at their Tagalog language help desk and living on Oahu now. She ended up married to a shipmate of mine. Compare that to the perception of prostitution in this country where a prostitute is considered to be forced into disgusting acts with strangers to feed some sort of drug dependence.
