I do believe that the author of the quote that I've posted has a valid point.  Too many of the "Lifestyle" folks on this site place a gratuitous amount of emphasis on some worn out ideals and rules pertaining to BDSM.

How many is too many", who are these people? Can you cite examples? I would be interested in your reply. Your post I quoted reminds me of bad journalism like on Fox News and CNN where reporters utter things like "Some people say this or that" instead of actually reporting what real people say or do or think.. the point is made by saying "some people" "most people" "the vast majority of people".. with no evidence to back up the "facts" to support your opinion.

Be glad the lifestyle criticized itself instead of the media. When the media gets its greasy paws on this lifestyle they will be sure to put their candy coated glossy spin on it.

OUCH!!!  Remember folks........I wasn't levelling a blanket generalization at all BDSM enthusiasts.  Good Lord- the invective around here gets flung like a Jim Nabors/Roc Hudson money-shot.  At least you guys are GOOD at it.

LaTigresse -> RE: Lifestyle Criticism (7/5/2006 7:20:09 AM)

I fail to see how the above response related to what I posted:

quote:

There are people who play at it, There are people who live it and there people who have it as their social passtime.. All are correct as liong as none of them try to force their version down the throats of others and claim to have the only "TRUE" system..... Bit like the Gorean Lifestyle really.. Not for everyone and no two Goreans will agree on everything.. If it works for you, great allow your life and actions speak for you.....

I was stating what most people I have found work on. There is no accusation nor any slapping of aughty wrists. just a plain statement..Keeping in mind that I am not part of any BDSM Lifestyle. I live a Gorean Livestyle which is different, but have friends who are seriously into BDSM..

I think he's cute, in a sardonic kind of way.

Kedikat -> RE: Lifestyle Criticism (7/5/2006 10:19:24 AM)

That sort of thing is here. But in the minority at that level. Thankfully.
There is always a core of fanatics in anything. They stand out and add a false colour to the rest.

marksl -> RE: Lifestyle Criticism (7/5/2006 11:39:52 AM)

hi new to the forums but long time caller, what exactly is the "lifestyle" i been wondering this for a while, internet based? local community? or some fantasy confused belief we add on to rough sex. How many take this "lifestyle" seriously to contribute on a community level or the main core of the followers made up of casual types that wouldent make this a lifestyle but something else. Does going to a fetish club autmomatically add you into the style or do you have to sign up for life. Does any of this make any sense. I talked to many people who practise this from pro dommes to people at clubs to chatters online. What i found no one knows what the broader picture is only their small part in it to save time they refer to it as the "lifestyle" but i am looking for a more abosulte answer.

BitaTruble -> RE: Lifestyle Criticism (7/5/2006 11:49:03 AM)

Welcome to the forums, Marksl.

"Lifestyle" is just another term used to describe a way of living. There are certain generalities when one states their style of life. Bohemian, Goth, Rich and Famous, M/s, Gorean etc. What you automatically think of when someone uses one of those terms. If it catches your interest, you can ask more specific questions from the individuals who practice what it means to them. There is no absolute answer and until we have a 'rules book' on the human condition, there won't be .. and even then, lots of us will break those rules. ::chuckles::

marksl -> RE: Lifestyle Criticism (7/5/2006 11:53:11 AM)

hi and thanks for the welcome Bita, Well i am looking for something deeper than the generalised meanings we use to describe our interests, what exactly is the lifestyle that we all interact in. There are no rules assigned to it. The only thing we have in common is a shared interest with people who are from all over the world. The terms are the simplistic way of describing what we like but the word "lifestyle" seems to have a deeper meaning.

While perusing one of my all-time favorite sites, (www.blog.iblamethepatriarchy.com) I came across this quaint little critique of the "Lifestyle".

Also one of my regular favorites, Twisty is a very thought-provoking writer.

quote:

"I further suggest that BDSM, like most  counterculture “scenes,” is perhaps overly self-congratulatory on its supposed transgressivitude, since its constituents clearly demand the most banal ritual conformity, to a degree that possibly surpasses even that of junior high school. Which school, as you know, wrote the book on banal ritual conformity.
BDSM reminds me, among other things, of Dungeons & Dragons, and the dog show circuit, and those dudes in the park with swords and chain mail, and indie rock musicians, and guys who wear Star Trek uniforms to work, and people who deconstruct “American Idol” episodes in internet forums, and toddler beauty pageants."

If this blog is one of your all-time favorites, then you know everything she posts is done specifically to inflame, irritate and get people's hackles raised.  You left off the next part of her Jan 26th post where she says: "Am I mocking your “lifestyle”? I sure am! Although this should come as no surprise to even the casual reader, since I have made it no secret that the founding principle of I Blame The Patriarchy is opposition to all dominance models in the social order."  Can't get much clearer than that, though I know even considering such a thing is unthinkable to many people.

She's a feminist who believes that bdsm is a fetishization of patriarchial roles. I beg to differ but she's certainly entitled to her opinion.  Having an honest discussion about how, in our society, getting laid is supposed to give you power and whether a large part of bdsm is simply dick worship (regardless of the roles played by the people involved) would be very useful.  Posting parts of an inflammatory blog without explaining the perspective from which she writes? Not so useful.

TreSwank -> RE: Lifestyle Criticism (7/7/2006 6:42:00 AM)

The perspective from which Twisty was writing the article was not exactly in the context of the point that I was attempting to make.  Most lifestyle Dominant men that I've met, tend to give out the same sort of "detached from any semblance of reality" vibe that pours off of anime watching, Renaissance-frequenting, fluent Klingon speaking nerds.  Like I explained in my message-there's a very distinct demarcation between MISFIT and DORK.

Fast reply-not really.

But I begin to wonder if gamma radiation pouring off of momnitors can result in gradual mental retardation at times.[;)]

Possibly so, however I have heard, from reliable sources,  it does result in baldness...[image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m11.gif[/image]

Dv8Top -> RE: Lifestyle Criticism (7/7/2006 7:00:51 AM)

Yeah Tre they are special, aren't they?  You see you are a "newbie" and therefore they are entitled to dismantle, and denegrate, you, and your intentions, at will...it matter not that they wander off chasing their own ghosts and demons, they will find you inappropriate...after all it's thier right as long time CM keyboard flexers.

Welcome to the judgemental world of folks involved in a "nonjudgemental" lifestyle...[image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m28.gif[/image]

CrappyDom -> RE: Lifestyle Criticism (7/7/2006 8:27:24 AM)

DV8,

We don't dismantle newbies, some like you, just self destruct and from the wreckage, they can't see the difference.

TreSwank -> RE: Lifestyle Criticism (7/7/2006 11:45:39 PM)

Dv8Top,
