That's total murders? For the whole city? That is pretty low compared with a lot of US cities. Chicago had the highest number of murders in the US last year, at 500.

And Chicago is large enough that though the gross numbers are larger the murder RATE is lower


Marseille has 850000 people so the rate for 2012 was 24/8.5= 2.8 Chicago's homicide rate in 2013 was 18.5

just as a cruiosity, there are 3 cities with more than 250000 people safer than marseille in USA and are Henderson Nevada, Lincoln Nebraska and Plano Texas

Aren't all three 600,000 population shy of providing a decent comparison with a population of a quarter million, though?
Cities with a population of 850,000+ and lower murder rates would be more useful as a yard stick.

I don't understand what you ask, BamaD said the rate was lower I did the clculus and it was higher, than I wrote the tree cities that had a lower rate. If you wanted to compare with US cities with a population between 700,000 and 1,000,000 they are fort worth 5.7, charlotte 6.4, san francisco 8.4, austin 3.7, indianapolis 11.6, jacksonville 11.1, san jose 4.6... there is also detroit 54.6.

Memphis has about 700,000 people and in 2009 had 132 murders.

I know he has me blocked but If he means lower than Marseilles murder rate, his maths needs double checking.

Chigagos population isnt ten times that of Marseille, yet the number of murders is close to tenfold.

If Marseille is so bad because of muslim immigrants then why is Dearborn Michigan so safe? I don't have the exact numbers but I think it's way above 40%.

That's where we get the phrase "magic underpants" from. It makes me wonder what cutesy little name they have for the head gear muslims wear but I notice they don't use that one around here so I might never know.

I was simply pointing out that most of the Cocaine Cowboys of the 80's in Miami were Cuban and Columbian and primarily Catholic. Pure correlation.

They murdered people in the streets to eliminate the competition. They imported the drugs that poisoned our youth.


I was simply using an example of how ridiculous it is to blame a religion for the behavior of a few dozen (or in the case of Miami a few thousand ) adherents and you fell for it hook line and sinker.


I don't think you were slamming catholics in your post but I have seen it several times in this forum. That was were my reply came from.

As to the topic of the OP, I think being a port city has more to do with it than anything else and Miami is a fine example. Now if we could just come up with an excuse for Detroit.[8D]

According to Wikipedia, there are no American cities with a population over 850k with a murder rate lower than Marseilles. None. The closest is San Diego, which has about a 50% higher murder rate (3.5 per 100,000 residents). The highest is Philly, with a murder rate of 21.1 per 100,000 residents, almost 9x the rate of Marseilles.

some more pixels in the picture, as I wrote in an earlier post I always considered marseilles as a dangerouse city as it was connected to naples' criminal cartel "camorra" and it is a node for smuggling drug into our country, in 2012 (when the data in the article were taken) naples had a record in murders (62 hmicides in a city of one milion population) due to a war between two clans, I remember the situation calmed down when the governament threaten to send the army to support police, so I think that the raise in the homiceds in marseille where part of that power war, blame the catholics if you want cammorists are known to be devotees in their own way.
