minus 22 here this morning
2 ice storms in a week and a half, and hasnt gone above zero*farenheit* more than once since christmas.
Lost all the trees in my garden due to ice, 4 big firs and alll the trees in the street have lost more than one or two big branches.
we had several hundred thousands out of power for over a week.
I m lovin it, altho if I couldnt afford my power/heat.....or was homeless, I would put it down to more than yellow journalism.

Chicago hit -16 yesterday with wind chills of -45. That was the record low for the date and this will be the longest stretch below 0 in 20 years.

So yes it is a little more than yellow journalism.

It is a balmy 19 degrees here this morning, yesterday it was 11. The funny thing is that yesterday evening, it was warmer in Easton PA (40 dgrees) where my non-biological sister and niece is from than here, we were at 19.

This morning it is -1 in Easton.

And of course I have to drive to Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas for a follow up today.

It's going to be 70 here this weekend... Makes the sky high property costs seem very worthwhile

The media was much more concerned with a return to the glory days of "yellow journalism" with an alarmist bent.

I think it continues, today. All we have to do is notice it.

I'm of the belief that ANY weather forecaster who uses ANY extreme words like "terrible," "unbelieveable," "worst ever," and so on, should be charged under the PATRIOT Act as a terrorist.  After all, aren't they trying to "terrorize" us (into listening to their commercials?)  Me, I read the US Weather Service forecast (and watches and warnings) and go my way.

After all, the MAIN source of the sensationalism is that ALL the weather "persons" get their forecasts from there.  The ONLY way they can say "Watch OUR weather news" is by dressing it up in their own manner.

Try reading the US forecast for your city and then listen to your local weather forecaster.

Any here's the REAL irony.... the US service relies on local forecasters (and of couse automated readings) to write their forecasts.  They probably remove the hype... LOL!

P.S.  Ever study systems with a negative feedback loop?  That's the first topic when you study chaos theory.

//Class is now in order.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you a fine example of a negative feed-back loop.... The weather forecasting system in the US.
//Hehehehe

As temperatures around Toronto and across Ontario drop to -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit), residents are reporting frost quakes that are powerful enough to shake houses and rattle nerves.

Usually found in extreme polar regions, the recent outbreak of frost quakes, known to meteorologists as cryoseisms, are now affecting many residents of Toronto, Canada’s most populous city.

The weather-related phenomenon, which can feel like an earthquake, happens when water and moisture deep underground freeze as the temperature drops.

Frost quakes typically occur between midnight and dawn, the coldest part of the night, thus many residents are being jolted awake by the booming sounds.

Damn! and here I thought it was the wild sex

Now the last time I experienced the Polar Vortex was in 1977 in Cincinnati. Temps hit a record low of -25F (-31C). I have determined that I do not like those cold temps anymore!

No, no you don't understand - we didn't even get any of the cool white stuff. All we got was the cold.

Here in Northern New England, this kind of cold isn't all that unusual. It was 20 below zero last Saturday, and we had ice just before Christmas and spent three days (including Christmas day) in the dark with sub zero temperatures. But, hey, we are used to a little of this almost every year. I really feel bad for people who live in areas that are not used to this. At least our homes are usually built for this. Many homes in the south aren't built for this kind of cold and will be dealing with frozen and burst pipes.

I have an aunt who often jokes that if she were a terrorist, she wouldn't bother with bombs, guns, planes, and the like. She'd simply take over the Weather Channel and induce mass hysteria.

It was 12 degrees this morning when I got up at 5:30 and the high was 29 today. For us in the South, that's just too damn cold. But for the good news, it should be in the mid 60s this weekend with rain. Welcome to Georgia in January.

I lived 10 minutes from Easton when I lived in Allentown, PA 3 years ago, before I moved here to Baltimore.

It's supposed to be -4 here tomorrow morning. So my work stated we could take telework tomorrow if we had supervisor approval. I called my boss and asked him if i could because I have to walk to my bus and train in the morning. So yay! I get another day of telework! The cold is good for something at least!

I grew up in Western PA up top of a mountain. Most of my friends and family still live there and most of them were telling me that this is the coldest they have ever felt back there and they are used to bone chilling cold and feet and feet of snow. So weird. They never ever cancel stuff there but apparently the entire town has shut down because everything is frozen.

Here in Baltimore all the pipes are bursting. According to the city here, so far at least 6 pipes have burst in my area alone...lots of slick roads and sidewalks right now.
