Two men are sitting in a bar, on top of the Sears building in Chicago.

They're both more than a little drunk. One turns to the other and says: "You know how they call us 'The Windy City'? When they built that building across from this one, they created a wind tunnel effect."

"If you jump out of this window, you'll fall about 50 floors and then, the tunnel effect will blow you right back into the window."

The second drunk tells him he reckons he's full of shit so the first guy gets up, jumps out the window and sure-enough; he gets blown back in.

The second guy shouts: "That's fuckin' cool!". He jumps out the window and hits the pavement a few seconds later with a "splat".

The bartender shakes his head at the remaining guy and says: "Superman, you are one mean fuckin' drunk!"

ETA: I did this because as a (partially) white man, Mr. Bukani's joke is offensive. So, thank you, whoever reposted it (there's a myriad of reasons I have the guy on block)

What was the last thing to go through the mind of a New York stockbroker on a bright autumn morning in 2001?
The radio mast.

I've wondered how the European countries that have strict laws against certain expression of opinion, deal with someone like Randy Newman.

If they ban him, are the actually helping the racists maintain a shred of credibility?

(For those not familiar, Randy Newman writes some satirical songs where he sings deadpan in the personae of a bigot or racist).

I am not sure whether or not you are from the United States or know how things work here, but comedians, politicians, drunks on the streets and anyone else are all "allowed" to make racist comments. No one is going to arrest them for it. What most of us are advocating here is that people can say whatever the hell they want to as long as it does not harm or threaten to harm others.

In our society free speech is not a "card." It is just part of life here. We deal with jackasses who make inappropriate comments because we respect their right to do so. When enough of us think a particular jackass has crossed the line, there are generally "social repercussions." People will stop paying money to see an offensive comedian or they will vote against a politician or simply ignore a drunk (or a jackass). The social repercussions tend work more often than not.

So go ahead. Say Hitler was great if that pleases you. Call blacks the N word and proceed to denigrate every class in society that you feel the urge to. Let it all out. Frankly, no one really gives a fuck. Whatever the CM mods do is your problem alone to deal with. The posters who wish to entertain you are more than welcome to do so. Others will simply use the block feature (which I suspect a great many people already are). Still others view all racist comments as the foolish ramblings of a drunken jackass, not even worthy of a response.

This (a person's big mouth and all the trouble it creates for them) is what we call freedom of speech.

FR

Every right ends when affects other person's freedom, even free speech, and it ends when defamation begins, and about satire... well... it ends where propaganda begins.
One thing is making jokes about stereotypes or facts reported in news, another is pounding againg and again the same ethnical group just to encourage hate. That's the lane to draw.
I know that US laws about defamation, where they exist, are much less plaintiff friendly than europeans ones, but in most european country are present and enforced, france decided that when defamation is directed to ethnical groups it gets more serious, and so there is a specific law against it. I think it is right but I don't know if this Dieudonne crossed the line as I never heard of him before, but for what I heard I have a strong suspect he did.

Said this... if someone wants to hear some racial jokes can send me a private message.

probably we get sarcasm

by the way there is difference between expression of opinion and defamation

Satire and sarcasm aren't the same thing...

he talks in a way to do a satire of people who actually talk that way? that's the definition of sarcasm!

Moonhead -> RE: Are comedians allowed to be racist? (1/15/2014 3:56:00 PM)

No, he doesn't do comedy accents.

EdBowie -> RE: Are comedians allowed to be racist? (1/15/2014 5:42:55 PM)

The definition of sarcasm requires a level of exaggeration that he doesn't always use.

He pretends to be singing as the person who honestly thinks that if you touch a gay person, you will become gay, or who thinks it's still OK to say the N word.
It's up to the listener to realize that he (the composer) doesn't mean it, just like those photographers who took snapshots of racists in the 60s weren't themselves racist. .

Again you play the free speech card.

Free speech is not a "card," MrBukani, and I deeply doubt you could comprehend the contempt I have for anyone who would refer to it as such. The right to express the thoughts in one's mind is, to my way of looking at the world, a fundamental human right, and I will load my guns in defense of it, should it ever come to that.

I'm aware that some Europeans will try to compensate for the inadequacy of their liberty, and the emasculated condition of their very humanity, by mocking and denigrating the limitations of power placed on my government. They are pathetic, as is the premise of your thread.

MrBukani -> RE: Are comedians allowed to be racist? (1/16/2014 11:14:03 AM)

You don't even have free speech in here[:D]
So what are you doing in such a restricted area, you should hate by your own definition?
What kinda dissillusion you live in?
Lock and load... if you please. Shoot the messenger.[:D]

And if anyone doesn't value a discussion of where free speech ends and where discrimination starts, I'm sorry for those people.
Free speech ain't the only freedom we got.
It's because of free hate speech Russia has anti-gay laws.
A lot of you seem to get jaded spending too much time in the forum realm, talkin to a very limited small(minded) audience.
Get out see the sun, have some fun and meet new people instead of coveting and slobbering over your gun.[;)][:D]

If this is all you have to say I wish you a goodday.
Thanks for droppin in anyway.

PS it has little to do with europeans, it's a global thing. Hell american TV still bleeps every fuck and swear word on many channels. So what kinda inadequace you're rambling about?
Freedom is a myriad of possibilities all connected...
