FR:

Just finished reading The Last Dragonslayer by my favorite author, Jasper Fforde. I've read almost everything by him (and own most of them now), so I've usually just read or am about to read something by him.

Right after finishing that I started on The Gatecrasher by Madeleine Wickham (aka Sophie Kinsella). After that... I think I'll tackle my first Grisham - The Last Juror probably.

:) Or more Fforde.

Mr. P: you don't need to wait for a hard copy. Get an e reader or get the app for your computer and phone and read them wherever you are.

And I'm reading junk because they're free. I have an objection to spending $25 for a book. I wait till the paperback has been issued and buy the kindle version for $7 instead of $12. E reader prices tend to run about half that of the print version.

However I did pre-order Dark Wolf by Christine Feehan. I had forgotten about that and was thrilled to turn it on the other day and have it download.

Sad to say I am one of those old dinosaurs that actually believes and enjoys a "real" book. I refuse to get a kindle. Just seems wrong to Me. Not saying they are, I just prefer to sit back in My chair with the book in My lap, physically turning pages.

I also much prefer hard cover books. Almost My entire Stephen King collection is all hard cover. Paperbacks have a tendency to fall apart faster, especially if it happens to be a story I enjoy.

I love real books, but having moved house over 40 times, I love my kindle.

Just finished Gone Girl. loved it.
Just started Gone With the Wind.
I like to alternate between contemporary and classic.

Valley of Amazement by Amy Tan
Doctor Sleep by Stephen King

I was reading The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins, but then I got the Walking Dead graphic novel compendiums for Christmas so now I'm a bit hooked on them. I will have to start Collins again I think. I'm going skiing next month so I've loaded the entire Sherlock Holmes collection onto my Kindle. I dimly remember reading some as a child, but I've enjoyed the BBC show and I thought I would go back to it. Does anyone have a recommendation for which one I should read first? Or is it important I read them chronologically?

IMO, Grisham's first is his best - A Time to Kill, followed by A Painted House.

Sure, his legal thrillers are page turners, but they started to feel like he was just fulfilling a contract with his publisher.

The Last Juror and Runaway Jury I got dirt cheap at a book sale several months ago, that's why I'm starting there. Plus, legal thrillers is a good genre for me.

Waiting for Skin Game to be released, Dresden files

Ollieboomboom -> RE: What are you reading? (1/12/2014 10:19:36 AM)

Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography and (hangs head in shame) ..I'm reading it on a new Kindle my children gave me for Christmas. In anticipation of being admitted to the hospital for a bit, they loaded a list of books I'm interested in on the Kindle. I feel like I've betrayed the bibliophile and writer in me. [&o]

I do wanna reada both The Ceremonies and Songs of a Dead Dreamer because I've always felt like Lovecraft was onto something, if only he'd been a totally different guy.

Most horror writers will try to do a Lovecraft pastiche, and most of those are very bad at it. There are some good ones by Ramsey Campbell and Kim Newman, though.

I read The Green Mile when it was first released. One. Chapter. At. A. Time. It drove me mad waiting weeks for each little chapter paperback to come out!!!

Rawni -> RE: What are you reading? (1/12/2014 7:39:14 PM)

MistressDarkArt -> RE: What are you reading? (1/12/2014 8:37:56 PM)

Just finished Elizabeth Kubler Ross's "Is There Life After Death". Short, thought provoking and ultimately comforting.

Before that, Ira Byock's "The Four Things". Thank you, I love you, I forgive you, please forgive me. Supporting stories for each statement. Very, very good. Don't wait until someone you love (including yourself) is dying to read this book. There is a lot of healing to be had from it NOW, and it really is as simple as those 4 things to complete relationships.

littlewonder -> RE: What are you reading? (1/12/2014 10:40:00 PM)

Kubler Ross is a great author about death, dying and grief. After my husband passed away, reading her books really helped me to figure out what the hell was going on with me.

sunshinemiss -> RE: What are you reading? (1/13/2014 4:39:44 AM)

I'm re-reading (and savoring) Outlander in anticipation of the show. And of course I'm reading the textbook I wrote... editing is the bane of every writer I think. And I'm reading a whole bunch of academic articles doing research for another book I'm working on (and LOVING it!). I just finished a paper last week that I did a slew of research on for the last year, reading all I could get my hands on about creativity... and now I need to translate the paper into Spanish for a journal in South America. I'm simply not good enough at Spanish - I'm hiring a professional for that...

Ah yes, 3 or four pages of Outlander are like dessert for the brain! Is it bedtime? Can I start my 3 pages yet? No? Ok. Back to research!
