No disagreement with that, but your OP is not a good apples to apples example of racist treatment.

Racism is alive and well in USA.

During the filming of "24 Hours" Kiefer Sutherland was charged with cocaine abuse. However, they didn't kick him off the show.

Lorraine, you're kidding right?
You don't (really) think that Keifer Sutherland is an ..."actor" do you?
He's like the boss's son. He gets the job no matter what.

I remember the cocaine charges against him while filming "24 Hours." The judge gave him a very lenient 6 months sentence. To top it off, they allowed him to continue filming until the season was completed. Then he served his time. They then let him out early. The USA justice system is unfair. I can start another thread pointing out how the Justice System gives harsher crimes to minorities than whites.

If you're going to make a comparison, at least compare apples to apples.

You're comparing someone famous to someone who was an unknown. Keifer's penalties or lack there of, were because he's hugely famous, is the son of someone famous and wields power in Hollywood.

You're comparing being removed as a contestant on a TV show to someone that is a star and producer of a TV show.

It's an inaccurate comparison.

In my experience many USA citizens are racists, especially when they are obsessed with and protest against racism.

I suspect that it is because they lack nobility of soul, i.e. they are without the Holy Ghost.

kalikshama -> RE: American Idol Racism Lawsuit (1/13/2014 10:06:50 AM)

As a Unitarian Universalist, I am indeed without the Holy Ghost.

mnottertail -> RE: American Idol Racism Lawsuit (1/13/2014 10:08:45 AM)

I had the holy ghost over to the house once, but he didn't eat pork or drink, so outta here clown; that was it.

I think everyone here would concede that the US justice system is unfair and that minorities get harsher sentences than whites and poor people get harsher sentences than the rich. What no one can seem to figure out is how do we fix that? Do we make mandatory sentencing on all crimes so that judges have no discretion to give out lighter sentences to anyone? Do we let guilty people go free because they are black just to even things out? I agree sentencing should be more fair. I also think decriminalizing drugs would solve a multitude of problems.

EdBowie -> RE: American Idol Racism Lawsuit (1/13/2014 12:20:33 PM)

I would think that a thread about racism in the entertainment industry that completely glosses over the treatment of Asian performers, is starting out with blinders on.

Just sayin'

Racism is brought to the fore by racists.

They come in a variety of colors.

There was a good piece on NPR yesterday about lack of diversity in the entertainment industry.

The Globes Will Be Golden, But Hollywood Remains Mostly White

No, the Holy Ghost and your usual weekend gallon of Scotch 'Holy' spirit aren't the same thing, Ron. ;-)

Is the NFL racist because they have more African American players than White players ? How about the NBA.? The most talented players are there because they are the best at what they do. Maybe the corporations that make movies are doing the exact same thing. They hire actors most people want to see. It's all about the money.

EdBowie -> RE: American Idol Racism Lawsuit (1/13/2014 6:49:49 PM)

NBA hireability is all about distribution of fast twitch muscle fibers, etc.

Are you going to try to keep a straight face while claiming that there aren't enough minority actors with the physical skills and talent to get any parts other than pimp, or kung-fu icons?

That the entire race as a whole, just doesn't have what it takes to do the job?

People go to movies to see stars they know. There is always Lucy Lu if you like Asians on the big screen.

EdBowie -> RE: American Idol Racism Lawsuit (1/13/2014 7:01:06 PM)

ROTLF!!! So no actor has ever started as an unknown and become famous? It's all about people wanting to see white faces on screen?

You're done here.

I never said that and you know it. I said they like known actors, many of whom are minorities. Are you suggesting quotas in the movie industry ?

EdBowie -> RE: American Idol Racism Lawsuit (1/13/2014 7:57:16 PM)

That false analogy was a direct quote from you, and it is pure sophistry that bears an uncanny resemblance to David Dukes' playbook about how oppressed white people are because they are discriminated against in the NBA.

Many of whom are minorities? No not many. There are actually very few black, latina and Asian actors and actresses. So few we could actually count them.

No one is suggesting quotas however it might help if the few available Asian roles are played by actual Asians; instead of altering the eyes and appearance of white actors to make them look Asian.

There are no easy solutions for the racial inequalities that exist but the first step should be at least recognizing those inequalities do exist.

EdBowie -> RE: American Idol Racism Lawsuit (1/13/2014 9:37:26 PM)

Exactly... note that even the Charlie Chan character was too dynamic and forceful, so only white actors could play him credibly...

It's one thing to want a white actor for say, General Custer, it's another thing entirely when 100 Asian actors are all relegated to being delivery boys and so forth.
