Yes the do, it's called going through channels when asking the person doing to stop doesn't work.

But reasonable people would consider others and NOT even use their phone when in a cinema!!
Have you heard some of those smart phones when people are texting??
It's like listening to someone playing Space Invaders if they have the key tones turned on!

In many cinema's here they have the same rules as hospitals and doctors surgeries etc - ie, all mobile devices are to be switched OFF before entering the premises.

I find it extremely annoying and inconsiderate that people do not think of others before they selfishly do something that would knowingly annoy others around them.

Same for guns - they should not be allowed in the cinema. Period. Hand them in at the door to be locked away securely like you do with expensive jewelery or your coat at the cloakroom.

I don't think the cop should have drawn his gun either.
You'd think that someone who 'was instrumental in establishing the department's first Tactical Response Team' (according to 10News report) would have known better and also had the temperament and wherewithall not to use his weapon in such a minor affray.

That said, FWIW, I wouldn't have argued with the S.O.B; I'd have just shot the fucker for disturbing my peace! So it's probably good for us that we aren't allowed to carry firearms over here.
And I'd do the same for those pesky people that eat crisps (chips to you guys) and other noisy snacks in crinkly plastic or paper bags - eat your fucking food at home before going to the cinema!!

Which indicates that Oulsen did more than we have been told.

Of course everyone should follow your ettiquette,.......... im sensing a lot of ....wishful thinking bout killling assholes, just because they dare to annoy you, to be exactly the reason for badly needed mental heath testing.
With a gun and with floridas syg laws, its a psycho's paradise

You are probably right.
But, like many of these incidents, are we ever likely to get the true story of what happened?
I guess we'll have to wait and see what the legal process does.

Well... I ain't a Grouchy Olde Dino for nowt. lol.

I do agree with your last bit though - it definitely makes it psycho's paradise.
Personally, I think the SYG laws are A) useless; and B) stupid.

My suspicion, I have to say, is that the standard required for the term 'reasonable' to apply to a given case of death by gunshot seems to drop as time goes on. In a major sense 'reason' isn't involved in lots of cases involving the act of drawing a gun and shooting it. 'Second nature', 'instinct', 'intuition', 'reflexes' - those are the things that come into play when a given action happens so quickly that there's no time to be properly reasonable.

Yes. My point. How responsible was the killer? See my post at 172.

So before committing self defense a person should wait a couple of days to think it over calmly and rationally, by which time they are
dead, but at least their assailant is ok.
Are you familiar with the term Monday morning Quarterback.

No, he shouldn't and couldn't do that, of course. My response to that, though, would be that the reflexes (instincts, second nature, etc etc) wouldn't make the shooter reach for his gun if, in fact, he was not used to having a gun in a cinema in the first place. It would lead to him throwing a punch, hitting him with some object, or something else. In which case the popcorn-chucker here would probably still be alive.

So you expect a 71 year old man to engage in a fist fight with a man half his age and at best get beaten to a bloody pulp.
Or he can accept being bullied and assaulted as the fate of the elderly.

PeonForHer -> RE: Death penalty for being an asshole (1/17/2014 3:04:04 PM)

I knew you'd focus on the 'fist' bit and not the 'object' bit. And I didn't talk about a fist fight, I talked about his throwing a punch. Would an ex soldier want to engage in a fist fight with an old man? Not every angry set-to has to end in someone's death.

When you throw a punch you are in a fistfight.
The younger guy is going to respond accordingly.
That is unless you actually believe you can count on the assholes good will.

FR

how I see the facts reported I'm more inclined in thinking the 71 year old acted not for fear but out of frustration, it is not reasonable to think he would be attacked when being in a cinema if there was not a row of seats at least movements were slowed down, and the victim wife was between them calming down his husband, he would have been forced to attack his spouse first. A popcorn bag is not painfull and not violence it is a provocation to humiliate. To me it looks more something like "this is battery, ah-ha I got you! ... and bang!", and this is the kind of dangerouse thinking process the stand your ground principle incentive.

But we are trying to view the actions of a reasonable person not a sociopath.

yes exactly, and the 71 year old is not in the reasonable person category, he is or a person that acted because of anger or a sociopath in both cases not a reasonable person.

Jesus, Bama . . . this wavelength just looks insane to me.

I picture this event in a UK cinema. Obviously, no-one will draw a gun much less use it because no-one will *have* a gun. So all the parameters change. Say the ex soldier throws his popcorn and a bad-tempered, intolerant ex chief inspector (as is my dad, actually - I can *easily* imagine him in that ex-police-captain's position, were he to have been a US cop and not a British one) wants to do something physical. I would expect that the soldier would be shocked, most of all. Old blokes don't *get* physically aggressive with young, big men, all that frequently. Then I would expect the ex- soldier to pull himself together and remember where he is, who he is, and what's decent and what isn't. Fists in the face often have that effect; just like slaps in the face from women can.

But say that didn't happen. Say the ex-soldier starts to pummel the old guy. Now, in Britain I'd expect the soldier's companion and others to step in. I'd expect the same in the USA, too: because no-one likes to see a young big bloke beat up an old frail bloke. It's a sight that jars with most people's idea of what's right.

But I would *not* expect any of that to happen if people were once to stop and think, 'Hey, supposing one or both of those guys were to pull out a gun and shoot it?' The presence of guns and the thought that they might be used fucks everything up. Guns bring hi-tech, too-easy, hyper-aggression to the table and to me this just feels utterly unnatural and not how people should be with each other.

first thing: there are pictures of both of them on internet now, in a fist fight I would bet on the "granpa" he looks in better shape.
second thing: Reeves was not for sure someone you could bully, he confronted the guy went to the menager and confronted him again without backing off, maybe he was brave because of the gun, but he didn't acted like someone who was intimidated or bullied.
third thing: you assume the ex cop was for sure one of the good guy, you actually don't know if he was so irritating and rude to have started the agrument, I'm not saying he did, but for sure someone that kills even when can avoid confrontation being the grown up person and backing off is not a good guy, he is rotten inside, and if the law justify this kind of acts it is a law that helps bad guys.

Big difference between the need for self defence and someone throwing popcorn at you.

Monday morning quaterback sounds about right.

Of course he started the argument, he asked Oulsen to practice common courtesy.
