In any case, you learn something every day, I knew that UK was a far more violent place than the USA, but I didn't know that the 'retreat to the wall' laws had emboldened the criminals to this extent.

The claim was that he knew of no cases of home invaders attacking the residents, ever, so 10 years old isn't an issue. Unless of course, you are younger than that, in which case, you couldn't be expected to know about those incidents.

As far as being 'bullshit', I suggest you take that up with the Home Office, the same way you proved they were full of bullshit on all those other statistics that debunked your claims.

On 'the rest of us', Nope... I'm not going over that cliff with the rest of you, I prefer to deal in the real world as it is, facts and all.
But don't let me stop you from enjoying your cognitive dissonance of pretending that the reality simply isn't so.

That is not something I see very often. Respect, sir. Whatever tiffs we might have in the future, you have my respect for that.

To be fair I did think you weren't really thinking outside of modern times despite your literary flourish (something I'm prone to myself) of "the whole of history."
As for the reason why Americans are more violent than some (but by no means all) other cultures the answer is, in fact, culture.
We are just an ornery people. In my culture's defense I would like to point out that sheer numbers also plays a role. The law of averages alone ensures that some shit is going to happen here more often than in some other places.
I get the impression that many non-Americans think that there are just guns a blazing everywhere here in America.
They fail to realize that the media doesn't run stories like "64 PEOPLE WATCH MOVIE WITHOUT INCIDENT. ALL WERE WELL BEHAVED AND HAD A GOOD TIME."

Most of us go through our lives without ever encountering gun violence.

That's right, Ed. In fact, I can reveal that I've frequently seen people in cinemas throwing popcorn. Once, I even saw some small children exhibit such psychopathic behaviour right in front of me (when I was watching Shrek 2 at the local Odeon with my nephew).

I've never, ever claimed that Brits are peaceful people, Lucy. (And I'm sure you know, yourself.) We have a reputation (and one that's not entirely a stereotype, though a lot of it is) on the Continent of being aggressive. My point has always been along the lines of 'God knows how bad our murder rate would be if gun freedom here were to be as open as it is in the USA'.

My dad is an ex-copper who is intolerant by *anyone's* standards. He happens to hate guns - but that's standard for a Brit cop. Had he been in the situation of the ex-cop of this thread's OP, and had had a US cop's career behind him instead of a London cop's career - yes, certainly, I could imagine him doing the same thing. So, if I were to have my way, I'd arrange it that people like my dad don't have guns. That's it.

Did you notice that Mrs. Oulsen now claims she didn't know there was violence until the shot was fired?
So she could not have been shielding her husband.
The film should clear things up one way or the other.
Reeves also said that Ooulsen hit him and bent his glasses, this should be verifiable, one way or the other.

The video shows that Reeves wasn't lying about the way it occurred.

It also very clearly puts to rest the lie sworn to by several 'experts' here who claimed to know for a fact that Oulsen was a distance away harmlessly 'throwing bits of popcorn', while Reeves was rampaging from row to row menacing society.


That of course isn't enough to determine final guilt or innocence.

What little bit that can be seen, shows Reeves seated (where he had every right to be, and where 'stand your ground/retreat' is a non-issue), and Oulsen turned 180 and facing the back of the theater to throw a hand to the face.

What we can't see clearly is how hard Reeves was struck, and if Oulsen's hand was holding a box, cup, or what.

It appears that he has been charged accordingly. We will have to see how this plays out.

Two women who's lives have changed forever based on bad decisions by their husbands. Mrs Reeves however can still visit and speak to her husband.

Yes we will but it is looking better for Reeves.

I think Mrs Reeves said it best. She didn't know why her husband fired the single shot. They were both saying things back and forth to one another and tempers flared. Reeves wasn't scared for his life, he was pissed off. IMO
