ORIGINAL: tweakabelle According to the media here, most asylum seekers arriving here by boat are from Sri Lanka, Iraq and Afghanistan. All 3 of these countries have been racked by war for most of the past several decades. So much for the 'economic refugee' thesis. Sri Lanka's civil war was between the majority Singhalese (who happen to be Buddhists) and minority Tamils (Hindus). This is not compelling evidence to support the Islamophobic tone of the OP. Iraq and Afghanistan are Muslim countries that share the privilege of being invaded by Western military forces in the not too distant past. Many of the Afghani and all of the Iraqi asylum seekers can be said to be fleeing the consequences of Western military interventions in their home countries. It is a sad fact that xenophobic and sectarian fears have been stoked by right wing Australian politicians seeking power, preying on the fears and ignorance of the electorate in much the same manner as the OP. This has inflamed fears and exacerbated antagonism towards asylum seekers here. People arriving by boat seeking asylum has been a sensitive issue here since the influx of Vietnamese boat people in the 1970s - fleeing guess what? yes another disastrous Western military adventure in a foreign land. Tweak, if it's not about being "economic refugees" then they should have no problem going to China, Japan, Maylaisia,Madagascar etc, right? And "phobia" means "fear of" not dislike for. The problem here is that they are trying to turn "their problems" into "someone else's problems." If it's so bad in their own contries they need to kill everyone in their governments and start anew. Weapons these days are extremely plentiful and cheap to be had. (just ask our Atty General Eric Holder.) We have the same problem here in the U.S. with our "friend" Mexico. That's the latest scam, "asylum" because of ..."drug violence." That is a local police matter not a matter for foreign countries to be handling. As a U.S. Citizen I don't *exist* to be solving the problems of foreign countries. We have too many problems in this country that are not being dealt with, I assume you've heard of he "successes" of our president... Foggy Bottom. I do agree that "The West" should mind it's own business and not get involved in the problems of foreign countries.
