my mother raised that the topmsheet be placed pattern side down, pulled up to the top of the mattress. The blanket should then be placed (pattern side up) pull up 3 inches less than the sheet, which was then folded over the blanket to reveal the pattern.

So, what about single color sheets? As with clothing, sheets have seams and hems. Bottom sheet seams down. Top sheet seams up.

Also to confuse the matter, one must deal with the hems. The wide hem....usually about 3 inches wide....goes to the head of the bed.

But... as well as the pillowcases. I don't iron unless it is a really special occasion.

Actually there is sound reasoning to ironing hankies, and tea-towels. Both should be cotton only so that they can be washed on a very high heat, and ironing also helps kill any extra germs.

on the other hand, I hate ironing too, so my pots generally air dry, and use disposable tissues for colds. problem solved lol

Save yourself the hassle, get solid color sheets.

Besides, 98% of pattern sheets are floral, or some kid based stuff, so why bother?

That's exactly why I said it doesn't matter to me...all my sheets are solid colors so I can't really tell the difference.

Ydd- I was thinking of you just a day or so ago. I'm glad you showed back up! I've missed you.

Allie

Hey sweetie.....and everyone else......to be honest Allie, I am usually here once a day, just haven't had anything meaningful to say. Beside....you can always find me on Facebook.

My mother-in-law asked me the same question when she saw me make a bed. I put the pattern-side down as well for when it's folded down, you see the "good" side. I think it really depends on how one likes the bed to look when made. My own mother puts the pattern side up because she covers the pillows and everything. I just like the look of a turned-down bed. It's more inviting to me.

shy.......the only time the beds get made in my house is when the sheets get changed. ....its just not something I find important enough to do. Besides, when thr covers are all jumbled up, it makes it easier for the kitties to find a nice place to sleep!

theshytype -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/25/2014 12:44:24 PM)

If it were just me, the only time I'd make a bed is if I were expecting guests. Unfortunately for me, my husband prefers getting into a made bed. A made bed looks nice but I agree with you - just seems like a waste of time when it'll be all messed up again.

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/25/2014 4:14:39 PM)

YDD missed ya chica!! Glad to see you post.

I use solid color sheets. I only pay attention to seams and borders. I also make the bed when I change it, luckily MM doesn't care either.

But...this also came from the woman who ironed my father's hankies as well as the pillowcases. I don't iron unless it is a really special occasion.

Yup. This is how I was taught to do it by my ohhh SOOO proper mother and meastro of hostessing.
And the bottom had BETTER have hospital corners.

ETA. omg. I make my bed the minute I get out if it. I'd break out in hives at the sight of an unmade bed....~shudders~

ShaharThorne -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/25/2014 5:37:12 PM)

Solid sheets here, hospital corners at the bottom, at least 3 inches at the top, electric blanket (actually same color) and then the heavy mosaic afghan on top. I usually kick the afghan off and sleep with my feet tucked under the electric blanket and the rest of my body covered by the top sheet. At times I get night sweats so the top sheet gets tossed to the side as well.

FR

If there is something laying over the top sheet (blanket, comforter, duvet, etc.) the pattern side goes down.
If there is nothing but the top sheet covering the bed (as during summer), the pattern side goes up.

On making the bed each morning: Bad idea (unless guests are expected and appearance is important).
Better to throw back the top sheet each morning and let both it and the bottom (fitted) sheet be exposed to the air so moisture from your body that has been trapped in both during the night can evaporate into the air during the day.

DesFIP -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/25/2014 7:43:06 PM)

Pattern side down so when you fold the top of the sheet over the blanket, it then looks pretty.

ExiledTyrant -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/25/2014 8:18:24 PM)

Pattern down, so when I fold the sheet down it's all prettyful.

Jus sayin

Only pattern I would have is tiger stripe jungle camo, but it would be useless in a bed room..

sunshinemiss -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/25/2014 9:16:02 PM)

I also don't use sheets. I use the Korean padding that is a bit thick on the bottom and lays flat on top of the bed and then a blanket... I am cold even in the summer, so I always use a blanket. Also, under the padding, electric pad... oh.... I even put my clothes in the bed while I'm in the shower, turn on the electric pad, and then put on toasty warm clothes when I'm all dry and pink from the towel.

Happy just thinking about it!

KMsAngel -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/26/2014 6:04:23 AM)

i hate top sheets. always tangle. due to current extreme heat, i use a hippy style cotton throw during the summer, during winter i use a doona - no sheet necessary. just means you have to wash the covers more frequently. when i did prac in hospital, i did folded corners on the bottom, folded the top 3 inches over the blankets.

yourdarkdesire -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/26/2014 11:46:58 AM)

I use to do hospital corners, or in my house......military corners as my Dad had been in the Navy......but I don't do my corner anymore, while hubby does his side. When I get too hot at night, the quick fix is to just stick my feet out as if I just throw off the covers I get chilled.

Lucylastic -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/26/2014 12:15:45 PM)

I did hospital corners old school making bed till I got a quilt, and I really dislike pattern sheets, unless its an apple green, I have no clue why. Im another one who sticks her feet out .... I tried making my bed, but the dog nests every morning around 10 am....so its pointless... no top sheet, cos I wrap myself up far too often. but yeah the old feelings were, pattern down on the top sheet.

SoulAlloy -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/26/2014 3:10:25 PM)

All I remember from top sheets is being tucked really tightly into bed using them, loved restriction even then at a young age lol. Don't use them at all now

however, if I were to do so then it would be pattern down. it makes perfect sense because you fold it back over the rest of the bedding and the pattern then shows. what is the point of it otherwise?

This is correct.

Yup.

I'd be tempted to change the way each day for variety

littlewonder -> RE: How do you put the top sheet on a bed? (1/26/2014 3:33:24 PM)

pattern side down if it has a pattern, so that I can fold down the top along with the quilt and then the pattern side is showing on top of the folded down quilt. You also have to take into account the hems. The wider hem goes at the top. Smaller hem at the bottom.

If I'm being lazy or the top sheet is in the dryer/washer then I don't even bother putting it on. Sometimes that top sheet just gets messy much faster than the bottom sheet. [;)]
