LP will vouch for this one. I put it on My side.

Pattern side down.

I fold the comforter down, and then the sheet down over that. Making the bed with it face down means the pattern will show when it's folded over.

That being said, I'm a solid-color girl - white or pale grey to match the bedroom. But a lot of my white sheets have tone-on-tone embroidery on them, and ^^^ is how I make the bed with them.

I use a duvet on a comforter, so I don't fold the top of the sheet over. Therefore, pattern side up. Most of our sheets are solid, though. Of with an embedded stripe or pattern. So it goes up.

I know that staples and duct tape will not keep the top sheet from coming untucked at night.

^^^^^^
LOL!

I do NOT make my decsion on basis of "folding."  I put pattern down.  Think a sleeping bag.  The inside of the sleeping bag is all patterned to the inside, right?  Beds are therefore to be patterned all to the inside - with the top sheet pattern down.

I saw this and thought, "Heck yes! I totally know the answer to this one! This individual must really be in need of some step-by-step instructions on how to apply the top sheet to a bed in a quick and efficient manner. FINALLY, my experience as a hotel housekeeper is about to pay off!"

PSYCH!

Oh well. For anyone who cares, you stand at the bottom of the bed, hold the bottom length of the sheet 1/4 of the length in on either side (in whichever patterned direction you prefer), lift that thing up like you're lifting up one of those parachutes you played with in elementary school, and whip that sucker down real fast like you're trying to replicate the motion of a slinky, but with a giant cotton (or what-have-you) hankie. Then just tidy up the wrinkles, and voila! A perfectly centered top sheet, all ready and eager to be roughed, ripped, tossed, and tangled. Didn't quite work out like you'd hoped? Well, as in all things, practice makes the closest thing to perfect any of us could ever achieve. Of course, this is just how I was taught. There could easily be better ways, but since I'm probably the only sucker here who reacted this way to the title of this poll, I suppose we may never know. ;)

I am well aware of how to apply a top sheet on a bed.. There are different ways to accomplish the task. The poll I posted to see how others do it. Thanks for your contribution.

I realize that, I was just commenting on where my mind took me when I saw the title. I wasn't trying to tell anyone what to do, just thought I would share something a little silly. I truly didn't mean to disrupt your post or try to sound condescending in any way. I hope I haven't offended you or anyone, that certainly was not my intent.

Didn't offend me in any way. You offered a different perspective, nothing wrong with that here. In fact, taught me something I didn't know.

Welcome to the boards gypsy, enjoy your time here. [:)]

Well, since someone decided to give step by step instructions on how to accomplish the task (totally wrong btw) I will post the corrected version.

Upon finishing with the fitted sheet, you must remove the dogs, and the toddler who have climbed onto said bed while your back was turned, grab the top sheet as described, then lay it aside to once more remove the toddler and dogs, and repeat these steps about four times.

After losing all aspects of patience and any idea of doing this in a normal fashion, during a lull in the toddler/dog interference, grab the top sheet, get it on the bed in any way remotely correct, tuck the damn thing in, put the comforter on, and watch the toddler climb up on the bed and yell "Hide!" and crawl under the blankets giggling.

Hand it to the maid and see what she does. [:)]

Everyone knows it's pattern side down so when you fold the top up over the covers or turn the bed down before sleeping, the pattern shows.

Considering the highest number of people put pattern side up... I'd say not everyone knows. [;)]

FR,

Speaking of sheets, if you wad up your fitted sheets before stuffing them in the closet, check out this thread: How to fold a fitted sheet

Even those that gave reasons for pattern up didn't account for when someone turns the bed down in the evening. You have to have a right proper looking bed or what fun is there tearing it up with rough sex and violent tortures? This is my old bed with a slave turn down so she sleeps at my feet (below left). Notice how nice and crisp the pattern is when you're not looking at the washed out ass end of a printed sheet? It's because the top sheet was put on correctly, even if all the patterns on the pillow cases didn't match, the top sheet was pattern side down. With all the homemaker magazines and ads for linens, you would think you have seen it done correctly before (below right). There is no excuse for all those s-types and/or other domestic types to not know that.
