Despite having had 3 children I still cannot tolerate a screaming kid in a restaurant. I had my two younger kids with me and we went out with another couple. In the next booth over was a child that looked 3 to 4 years old that screamed and cried the entire time. While holding my baby who was looking at him like what is his problem the other couple said yeah that screaming boy sure is silly huh. I laughed a bit and thankfully they finally left. My friend said she didn't mind kid noise but that is just rude to make everyone listen to your kid scream like that while everyone else tries to eat. I had to agree, None of my children have ever screamed and carried on like that for no reason. Personally if I had a kid that carried on like that I would not take them out to eat to ruin everyone elses dinner.

When there are children, especially screaming children, Master and I usually just walk out. Neither of us can tolerate them.

When my daughter was a child and she started screaming like that, even if we were ordering food, if she started up, I would walk straight out of the store, restaurant, whatever with her swung over my shoulders as she kicked and screamed.

That would have been nicer then what this father did. He spanked the screaming child and told him to hush then made us all listen to it while the boy screamed louder cause now his dad hit him.

Yup, I've seen that before. Master and I just walk out. I know it's annoying as hell. I would at least drag my daughter out and wait till we got out to the car or when we got home.

This reminds me of when one time we were in Toys R Us and she started screaming for a toy that I refused to buy her. She is screaming and kicking me so I picked her up and walked out the store. The guards at the door thought I was abusing her as they gave me these darting looks so I looked to them and said "She's abusing ME! Do you see who is doing the kicking and screaming? It's definitely not me." and kept on walking.

And where do those kids get those powerful lungs from?? It starts at the base of your spine straight up to your ears. And hitting the kid is not going to make better.

A friend of mine was in Walmart once and her kid started screaming. My friend screamed longer and louder. The kid never misbehaved like that again. Go figure.

I have a low tolerance level for misbehaving children as well -- although less for the children than for the parents who allow the behavior.

I saw an article once about some restaurants (generally locally-owned ones rather than chains) that have begun a "no children" policy. If the food and service were decent, I'd certainly patronize such a place.

LOL I saw the one on facebook that said unattended children will be given an espresso and a free puppy.

I can tolerate noise. That doesn't bother me but screaming, never ending screaming. OY. There were other kids there who were all behaving perfectly well.
When we got up to leave this little old lady with white curly hair smiled at me and her husband who had barely any hair smiled and said I had such an adorable baby. She has just discovered the joy of shaking her head back and forth so she was doing that a lot and laughing. I guess others noticed and found it amusing.

@littlewonder: Change that to "Loud children and the parents that ignore them..." and I'm 100% on board! :)

I have three kids as well and I cannot stand hearing screaming kids in restaurants or stores, especially if we're out trying to have a kid free night out. At a store, as soon as I hear a screaming kid, I walk far away as possible to another section to get away from it.

We have been partially fortunate (and partially responsible) for not having horribly misbehaving children in public. There's certain times and places and situations when my children were more likely to throw a fit - we would try to avoid public situations during those times. Not just for the sake of others, but also for our own sanity. For the other random tantrum times, we immediately dropped what we were doing and left. Doing that alone seemed to be effective enough in teaching them not to do it. We must be doing something right because we have been told on numerous occasions on how well behaved our kids are.

FR

My favorite noisy-kid story comes from the first Christmas after my eldest nephew's birth the previous May. He came to Mass with us, and my brother was scrupulous about taking him out of the nave at the first sign of stirring.

After this had happened half a dozen times, I figured out the score: My brother was getting bored, and the baby was a handy "Get out of church" card. Back home over egg nog, I shared this hypothesis with the bro. He just smiled.

Back in the day I was known to throw my kid under my arm and march out, with the kid screaming, snot going everywhere and just a good time was had by all.

Of course, my tolerance level for horrible kids was tempered by having two kids with ADD, and boy, was that fun!
In spite of that, my kids weren't allowed to annoy others. Me yes, others no.

And it took me less than three years to figure out that smacking a kid was counterproductive.

I'm not so sure about the ineffectiveness of spanking a kid when he or she is misbehaving.

I don't have kids, myself, but I remember many years ago when my parents and I took my nephew, who was about 4 years old, to a restaurant. He finished eating, and then immediately started misbehaving.

After trying to calm him down at the table, my mother finally took him into the restroom, where she proceeded to wallop him pretty good -- more than she ever did to me and my sister when we were kids!

He was a complete angel for the rest of the meal.

When I see a kid screaming in a restaurant it's almost always late and the kid is overtired. The kid is not at fault because the parents don't have sense to eat earlier and let the child go to sleep at a reasonable hour.

I worked around my kids' schedules so they wouldn't be asked to do something that they weren't old enough to handle.

It may have been naptime but it was not late at all. We got there about a quarter til noon so we could beat the church crowd.

when my daughter was a child i never, ever took her to nice places until she was over the tantrum stage, around age 10 or so. Before that it was strictly Mickey D's and it had to be one with the playground unless we were just going through drive-thru.

When I wanted a nice time out at a nice place, all I can say is it was nice to have grandparents, aunts and uncles who babysat.

In line at the cash register at a walmart, two kids were in a shopping cart, the boy 3 or 4 in the standard seat of a shopping cart, the girl, 2-3 sitting down in the cart. The women was likely their nanny as she was a pale redhead while the kids were Asian. They were both raising hell.

Both crying and screaming. He, for wanting everything within reach at the counter, she likely following his lead. They were obviously a great annoyance and distraction for everybody in line. My man/mentor was with me, looked over at me and whispered, watch without a word or even raising my hand.

Silently as he said, my man/mentor looked them both in the eye and made a horrible face as if he was so sad and unhappy that they were. He looked again and put his head down like he was crying. then did this again spending more time with his head down on his arm as if crying.

The last time he looked up and had a big broad smile, now they too were both laughing, smiling and just beaming at him. He poked his finger toward them and said...gotcha. I had such a warm, wet feeling for this man come over me, I wanted to and practically jump him right there.

Lizard never fussed at a restaurant I am glad to say. Depending on the style, she always got the kids menu and we decided together what she would get. Olive Garden was alfredo, Red Lobster something different. McDonalds and BK was either a hamburger or chicken nuggets. These days she prefers chicken nuggets at McDs when we go shopping, a sub from Subway with avocado, a BIG hamburger at Baker Street (I get fish and chips and we split the Baileys cheesecake). When she was 2 weeks old, we took her to an expensive restaurant to celebrate her birth (after being told I could not have children, this was a victory dinner). No fussing and people were amused on ow well behaved she was (having fed her before going out did the trick).

It is natural for children to scream and yell in restaurants, and on airplanes, and in walmart, and in the movie theater.

What bothers me are a few things:

1) It is socially unacceptable and illegal to shoot said crying and screaming child with a tranq gun.

2) Stores, theaters and restaurants do not have sound proof areas to place said screaming children in...

3) It is socially unacceptable and illegal to use enhanced physical persuasion on the parents to aid them in hearing their wonderful perfect children being annoying.

4) You cant report these children and parents to the collarme mods for sanctions.
