Let's not forget the cab-driver who asks you if you know the way to your destination.............

That drives me berserk too. It's even more maddening when the cabbie shows absolutely no sign of recognizing that knowing the city is a key part of the job.

If I'm heading to an unfamiliar place, I've learned to research the route beforehand.

you forgot to mention the 'pie floater'. I will leave KMsAngel to describe that though as it is a strangely South Australian dish. Last one I had was in Port Pirie and it ended up in the Port Pirie dock.

People who still have election bumper stickers on their cars or the ones telling the world that their elementary school age child is on the honor roll.

KMsAngel -> RE: General Annoyances? (1/26/2014 7:59:00 PM)

lol, when i lived down there i avoided it like the plaque. like peas, like pies, but don't like 'pea soup' or smashed peas with my pie. ESPECIALLY when they cover it with sauce again!! Funny, i've not really seen those creatures this far north. maybe the cane toads get to them first [:D]

Based on the descriptions of authentic Aussie food, I think I understand why they Americanized it. No offense to the Aussies.

i like kangaroo, aries! the roasts are nice, just have to cook them right. they can be a bit tough otherwise. my daughter sent me a pic from the shops the other day - advertising , for australia day - kangaroo/emu kebabs, i believe. "coat of arms keemu kebabs"

fish and chips would be pretty typical too, don't forget.

tourists, especially the ones that will stop on the sidewalks while all of us who live here just want to get to where we're going. No matter how many times you say "excuse me", they stand there like they don't even hear you and then you literally have to shove your way past them.

Well, from what I hear, bush tucker isn't for the faint of heart.

You can get kangaroo at a restaurant off I-95 in Delaware. Pretty tasty critter.

I'm leary about anything else from Australia though. I've never met an Aussie I didn't like, but their animals are all poisonous. Even the beavers.

Pie Floaters are the proof that when you are drunk, you will eat almost anything

lol, we're talking traditional foods. home comfort stuff. Aus does some beautiful asian/fusion foods spectacularly well, and bush tucker was and is still quite popular. melbourne, though i've not been there for yonks, and then briefly, is a lot more European in it's culture and food, i believe.

i'm sure other aussies out here would be able to give you a better idea. As for me, i don't eat out a lot. too expensive on my income, and i'm far from big cities.

to get back to the theme, it annoys me when people presume to know a culture without actually being here, or just from watching movies (referring to the restaurant, in this instance)

Dvr22999874 -> RE: General Annoyances? (1/26/2014 8:15:54 PM)

Auusie is good for that KMsAngel..............very annoying to have some fool who has never been past the local pub, telling you all about a country one knows quite well, having either been brought up there, lived there or visited there many times

aussies are some of the friendliest, laid back people i've ever met.

bush tucker is generally really nice - wiki defines bush tucker as :
Bushfood (referred to as bush tucker in Australia) traditionally relates to any food native to Australia and used as sustenance by the original inhabitants, the Australian Aborigines, but it is a reference to any native fauna/flora that is used for culinary and/or medicinal purposes regardless of which continent or culture it originates from. Examples of Australian native animal foods (meats) include kangaroo, emu and crocodile. In particular, kangaroo is quite common and can be found in many normal supermarkets, often cheaper than beef. Other animals, for example goanna and witchetty grubs, were eaten by Aboriginal Australians. Fish and shellfish are culinary features of the Australian coastal communities.

barring witchety grubs and goanna, i've eaten all of that meat. i'd give goanna a go, but admit i'd be sqeamish of the grubs. balmain bug (vy similar to a really big crawfish) is delish. barrumundi is superb fish. the spices and the fruits are all unusual but quite good.

you'd be hard pressed to find a 'beaver' and catch it, though [:D]
the 'map of tasmania' would be far easier to find... head for manly beach.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: General Annoyances? (1/26/2014 8:19:58 PM)

And when you find the Map of Tasmania, you will enjoy eating at the 'Y'

bamabbwsub -> RE: General Annoyances? (1/26/2014 8:22:18 PM)

Another annoyance is people who send you e-mails and ask you questions that are clearly answered in your profile. ::: sigh :::

do you think non aussies will get it?

Dvr22999874 -> RE: General Annoyances? (1/26/2014 8:38:36 PM)

Probably not, but it's worth a try............Remind me to tell you about the emerald green rat one time though

TieMeInKnottss -> RE: General Annoyances? (1/26/2014 8:44:12 PM)

Think this is side effect of having a mom from the south...

Cannot STAND children calling adults by their first names!! Hate when another adult introduces me just by my first name. (For those who don't get the south connection...kids in the south always (at least in my mom's day) preceded an adult's first name with Ms, Mr, Dr...not as formal as the surname. I still cannot refer to adults I knew growing up by just their first names!

DominantWoman65 -> RE: General Annoyances? (1/26/2014 8:52:30 PM)

TieMeInKnottss, I don't know if it's a southern side effect or not. I was raised in Pennsylvania with those values which I passed on to my own children.

Me neither, and I'm a native New Yorker! Friday's mail brought a lovely get-well note from a family friend. She signed it with her given name, but I can't imagine writing back to anyone but Mrs. _____.

KMsAngel -> RE: General Annoyances? (1/26/2014 8:59:02 PM)

me four. until my kid's friends were 21, they called me mrs or aunt. i can live with aunt. but there had to be some sort of honorific until they at least had the age to be a 'peer' of mine. most of them still find it vy difficult to call me by my first name. [:D]
