There is a fundemental difference between "the state" and "the nation", "the state" and "the country". Those people who hold power always like to imply the state, the nation and the country, are the same things because it is in their interest for all to be seen as the same thing. But the reality is, they aren't.
Maybe Obama wants to fundementally change America, though I don't see no evidence of that, because America economic settlement is fundementally unfair? It is quite clear, the American economic model is skewed in the interests of big money who own American politics. It is not for nothing that America is the richest country in the world but has more per capita poverty than western European countries, it is because America's economy is rigged that way. Britain, which is the European country whicn shares a similar economic vision to America has precisely the same problem, a shrinking midleclass, increasing poverty and endemic social problems caused through an economic settlement skewed to the advantage of the rich.
According to the OECD and other economic research, developed countries with a more egalitarian economic settlement have higher social mobility, higher productivity, better health and education outcomes and less crime and other social problems which are an economic drain, such as drug use, alcohol abuse, domestic violence, less mental health problems etc etc etc.
Maybe Obama thinks a fairer America will be a better America?

Putin would put up with anyone, left centre or right who agreed with him but it is mainly rightwingers and desperate people who support him.
