I would say about the time some single celled rotifer started up in the primordal soup and flagellated the single celled rotifer next to it, noticed it was getting all hot,  and the two became four and so on.

I dont think Hitler was dominant.  He was a sadist though. Dominance and Sadism are not mutually inclusive.  There are some historical references to his masochist tendencies before coming into power in the 1930's.

Let's get this clear, Hitler was a nut job.

Where did Bdsm Come from?
How long has it been around?

How many people of the past do You know that where
Dominate or Sub/Slave?

Blowing SMOKE Misty

Hey Misty ... and all....

First of all, bravo for the amusing question,
and hurray for all the playful answers .....

Bondage is waaaay too important to be serious about, right?

Because others are playful,
I'll take the opening to put away my smart-ass part,
and ... remaining that contrarian that I am...
...  post with absolute earnestness ....

I invented bondage in early June, 1969,
and perfected it all that summer with the adorable Donna P.

Well, I sure thought I did!
We didn't have dirty magazines in that little town,
video-cassettes and VCR's were decades away ...

So... really.... I was totally convinced I had
created a totally new art-form ...

And we got caught 3 times that summer,
.... told we were dangerous and crazy...
....... got totally grounded
and still we snuck out together to tie her up,
and spank her bottom with switches we cut together,
thrilled almost beyond breathing all the time.

And kiss... and spank....and kiss... and spank....
and cum and cum and cum and cum till we couldn't walk or talk or even see....

But nobody... nobody told us other kids might have done this.
Maybe they didn't know either.  Those were naive times in small towns.

So .... when I went away to college, 3 years later,
and I found out that I did not personally invent bondage.
I was crushed ... this was my special, secret discovery and invention.

So, in some of your universes, BDSM started in Egypt,
or some caves in the south of France. or Kraft-Ebbing,
or the Marquis in prison, or maybe the cummy milky way like Bear hilariously says.....

But in my little universe,
bondage started on a glorious early-summer day in 1969,
in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada...
and two horny, crazy, silly, scared, thrilled, in-love kids
brought the most special kind of love and sex imaginable
into the world .... in our garage, her bedroom, the river-bottom,
and especially in that grove of trees down by the old abandoned stock-yard
which is the most beautiful place on the planet.

Doctor Dubious,
...still a horny, perverted little kid inside, how's that for an inner child? ...

Donna P, I owe you everything, everything, and I love you more than life itself.
I haven't seen you in 30 years, and I think of you almost every day.

I do get a bit tired of him being dragged in as an extreme example all of the time. Can we try something else for a change?

Poor baby...Someone needs a nap.

I seem to spend less time on CM message boards than other people do, so I have no idea what subjects get beaten to death.   I now I feel more enlightened.

But has no one ever heard of Leopold von Sacher Masoch, novelist, author of Venus in Furs, from whose name the word masochism is derived?  Though, granted, he didn't originate the thought, just had it  named after him!

(and do let's be careful of the proper use of the words dominant and submissive, dominate and submit - sorry, one of my pet peeves!)  :-)

There was a series called sexual history of the World. There was many references to BDSM in Rome, China, Japan, and the Ottoman Empire. I am currently looking it up because now i am curious to know more.

Dear Celeste, Carolsea.... and all other romantic perverts out there...

This is part of my dubious and diabolical plot....
... openly reveal my heart and soul,
.... rhapsodize about the glories of bondage
....... invite a gal home to "show her the ropes" so to speak
(that's my favorite cliche)

and when she's bound, and completely helpless....

Demonstrate that perverted little boys do grow up...
and have more ... ahhhh..... shall we say.... sophisticated tastes?

".... Just relax into the ropes, dear.... and breathe...
it'll feel better that way.. we've got a long, long time here, just you and me.... "

Dammit, ya beat me to it  Not that I mind.
Soon we may hear about the Marquis de Sade...and perhaps other famous names as well....
BDSM-where did it start....
Bondage started with the first knot
Discipline..... with the first person to say "no" and the first punishment
Sadism....with the first who realized they could feel pleasure from the infliction of pain on others, term derived from the Marquis de Sade
Masochism....with the first who realized that with the appropriate circumstances...pain is pleasure.
and if you include Domination & Submission
Domination....with the first who discovered that they liked having control over another
Submission.....with the first that discovered they liked being controlled by another

Of course it's deeper then that. But all it takes in the beginning is an idea.

John, a very thoughtful post about personal power and societal power.  Does a society have to have broad social freedom before it can "invent" B/D/S/M?

We know that B/D/S/M existed in ancient Rome (one thing about a literate society...EVERYTHING gets cataloged!) but we have accounts of the Emperors and the Senators, and their courtesans.  I don't know that we can assume "Joeus Bloweus" of street-corner Rome was into any sort of kink.  Similarly, in 9th C. China, we have novels that talk about sexual hijinks, including M/s role play.  But the characters are high borns, and again we have no picture of the "masses".  Both of these were societies noticably lacking in social freedom for the unwashed masses, and both have rich literary traditions of sexual kink.  But is there a crossover?

An interesting question and one that I'll be thinking about the next several days.

I agree with your thought that BDSM has always been a part of human sexuality, and it is my belief that members of the church used aspects of it,to a greater extent with the inquisitions, justifying their actions in the name of their God.Some definately enjoyed 'driving the devil out'of people, who may never have had it in the first place. The methods of such tortures, and the machines, put many modern perverted mind to shame and is it not so that some toys used in our time are not derivatives of those devices used by churchmen all those years ago.

Was Ceasar a dominat? probably
Was Marc Anthony a submissive?  Hell yes Cleopatra had him wrapped about her pinkie.
Was Caligula a (you name it)? Probably he brought perversion to new heights...
Were the Cavemen Dominants? If what is posited about their use of clubs I'd imagine so..

So Who started it.. An interplanetary war between Mars (for men) and Venus (for women). The Milky Way is all that cum shot all over from the rape and pillage.. Well mostly rape..

My theory anyway...

lol god i love reading your posts Sir
but to toss my 2 cents worth in here
there are 2 answers i think
1 - its just the natural order i think of things as they always have been and always should be

2 - wasnt it the Marquis DeSade that is the original founder of what is now known as BDSM?

Short answer, I think that's exactly it.  Sorta like you don't find a "cleaning fetish kink" among people who have to clean other people's houses for a living.  It's the options that make it fun

I've seen no indication Hitler was a sadist.  He didn't attend torture sessions or executions.  He did look at pictures but that seemed to be more for gloating and reassurance than jerk off material.

Sure he ordered millions killed.  Oscar  Mayer orders millions killed.  Sure their victims aren't human, but Hitler felt the same way.  That ain't sadism; is social pathology.
