The persistence of this topic is amazing to Me. Personally, I'm fat because if you offer Me a carrot or ice cream - I like ice cream better. If you offer Me a good book or a run in the park - I'll take the book thanks. That's not a lack of self control or an addiction or low self esteem. That's personal preference plain and simple. I'm hoping as time goes on I'll be rewarded by a major coronary and die before I can be taken to the hospital as opposed to growing old and developing senile dementia where I pee in corners and drool down My chin.

Psychological addictions are of course serious business and should be dealt with by professionals to help find the root of the addiction. Best wishes in that Wolfmoon6.

Well, it's a very heavy topic.  It burdens many relationships.  I understand why people ponder it, but it becomes onerous if you fixate on it.

I have the issue also that healthier food does cost more.  It is very annoying when you can't get what you want because of it.  It is very simple to say that you could just grow the veggies and such, but we must also remember that not everyone has a yard and the resources to do that.  There are farmers markets, those are good..but again..not everyone has those.

You don't need a 'yard' to grow vegetables, herbs and seasonings. All you need is some pots, and a patio or deck.

Exactly, you don't even have to have pots, cut one of those milk cartons in half and you can grow lettuce, or whatever.

Littlepita -> RE: Weight (7/8/2006 6:57:08 AM)

I am overweight and I have chosen to do something about it. I workout 6 days a week at my apartment gym. Don't have one then go for a walk, rent exercise videos at the library and do them in your living room. It's free!

I know how much food cost. I spend just about the same amount now for healthy foods like lean meats and veggies as I did for chicken nuggets, pizza and chips. Hell I think I spend less because fast food doesn't get my money now.

Being fat is a choice. Yes it can be an addiction. Get help! I was an addict to drugs, cigarettes and food. I beat two and working on the third. You can too!

Believe it or not.. even this is not allowed in some apt. complexes..so I thought by allowing for that..and pointing out that it really is possible..such as not ordering the pizza..and hitting the veggie and fruit section at the store.

It might also make someone think of the going and doing that with the 20 rather than calling Pizza Hut next time.  Like I said.. I evaluated myself how much we spent on pizza every month..and was amazed at how I didn't have "enough" money to eat more healthy.

I never even considered that some places might not allow you to have potted plants on the patios. Thank you, I would never have known this. I'm fortunate to have some acerage, yet still I plant on a screened in patio. I don't want to be bothered with the bug issue. I have enough issues with keeping them off my onamentals, I'm not feeding them anything else LOL.
My point in saying, 'try growing your own food', was an attept to allow the food addiction to be consentrated on, just in a healthier direction. It still has it's basic focus on food. That focus has just been skewed a bit. The growing of it, when is the best time to eat it for full flavor, learning how to freeze it, or can it. Finding healthier recipes on the net that taste great and still allow for the natural flavors to come through.
Sometimes, the kids will get into it too, being able to watch something grow and knowing they actually get to eat it.
Yes, if a person can't do this, then farmers markets are great.

I understand.. I mean I grew up out in the country..and never realized the limits that some wonderful apt communities put on the residents, until I lived in one.

I think it would be a wonderful thing to be able to do.  If I have kids someday, I want them raised eating the fresh veggies out of the garden..it would not only start them out in a healthy way, but give us an activity to do together (instead of video games).  I know that's a big issue with kids now, I mean I am 30 and even when I was a kid.. we didn't sit inside all day..we were outside playing until our parents made us come in.  Now it's hard to get some kids to even leave the house.. it's hot, I'm tired, blah, blah.

It worries me a lot that we are raising a generation with this high of obesity rate.  It makes my heart ache when I see an obese child.. just knowing the pain and health issues they will be facing.

I agree with the woman above... the reason I am fat is I would pick the (insert yummy fatty food) over the carrot.  It's a choice that we all made every day and until we start making the better choices..nothing will change.  It takes a lot to put down and get rid of any addiction.  I know that I have gotten rid of many..but the food one is my demon.  I do know though also, when I put my mind to it and am ready to do it... nothing will stop the action of eating better and getting healthy.

Bullshit! People are cured of addictions every day. If you're going to make such dramatic excuses for being a compulsive overeater, I suggest you get psychological help  . . . dieting ain't the issue.
I hate the food addiction bullshit too Happypervert...  With so many real psychiatric illnesses out there, I just think too much junk food and not enough exercising should count/be listed in the DSM-IV.  Having said that, I admit to having insecurities like everyone else on the planet, desiring similar things to most people on the planet, and make no appologies for my looks/weight to anyone.
I freely admit I hate running and love strawberry shortcake, LMAO.    M

hardvolume -> RE: Weight (7/8/2006 2:52:10 PM)

Wolfmoon,

I think one of the most important things to keep in mind is that you don't have to change your whole lifestyle overnight. Don't do anything that feels overwhelming to you. Think of the easiest possible change you can make right now, with very little effort, and make it. I think a big problem with a lot of diet books and fitness plans in general is that they put people into a mindset of, "Tomorrow morning is the day my new life begins." That's noble, but for a lot of people it's a setup for failure. If you're trying to make a positive change that will last for the rest of your life, what's the difference if you make it in one day or four months? Don't be hard on yourself. Just keep changing small things at a pace that is comfortable for you, and they'll add up.

Now, with that said...few things are hotter to me than the prospect of wielding a metal paddle over a nude, leg-curling submissive woman and growling "one more rep."

and attitudes like this are why it's becoming impossible for anyone with an eating disorder to get help - whether they're anorexic, bulimic, coe, or ednos. there is a difference between someone who eats too much and doesn't exercise often enough (hell, my 6 foot tall really skinny roommate fits that description) and someone who is a compulsive overeater. the first is a personal choice, the second is a disorder.

aaaaaaaaand i wrote a HUGE response to the op earlier but unfortunately collarme decided to break on me right as i was writing it, so maybe i'll try to reconstruct some of it later :)

I disagree, a persons weight is not always their own choice. I have poly cystic ovarian syndrome, and as a result of that I have a huge problm with weight. It is a known fact of this condition, that weight loss is very hard, and in fact is next to impossible for some. I exercise, I do classical fencing and swim all the time. I am luckier than some, primarily because of my frame. I am big boned anyway, and being 6 ft helps too....but I still have the issues with my weight. My condition, paired with my height and having a naturally large frame brings my weight to a grand 317lbs.

Do I wish I could change that, yeah I do.  I don't look as bad as I might, but I still would love to lose about 150lbs. Will I ever be able to do so???  Probably not.  So please do not use a blanket statement  like "ultimately their own choice", because that it not true at all.

I'm with you. I was diagnosed with advanced stages of cervical cancer at a young age. At 20 years old I was on so many hormones and steroids that I couldn't control the weight I was gaining. I went from a beautifully toned 132lbs to (what I see as a) disgusting 200lbs. HOWEVER I've been in remission for 1 year and 9 months and lost about 45lbs of that. It can be done and it's not been easy! I've always loved to eat, and you could even say came close to having an addiction to junk food. I ate when I was bored and what not. The combination of getting sick so young and gaining the amount of weight I did made me depressed and to add to it I wasn't able to eat like I did before without suffering devistating consequences, but again, losing the weight and feeling good about yourself CAN BE DONE! I've learned from my experiance that every challenge is worth facing and the rewards from facing and then conquering them are worth every drop of blood, sweat and tears! If I can beat cancer, and the weight gane, I know all of you can do ANYTHING you put your mind to!

givemyall -> RE: Weight (7/8/2006 4:26:39 PM)

I get so fucked off with people talking about weight - are you happy? - that should be the question!  Im well within my weight limits (as far as im concerned) - not that I own a set of scales (do I give a shit.... ermmm NO) ..... but I still get the arseholes telling me that im fat and have a saggy ass - great I say - love it or kiss it!

If you are happy - then why does it matter what anyone else thinks? - dont let society dictate what we think - if we did, all us girlies would be lay on our backs in the missionary position making the correct noises!

Shit to the people that dont like us!

*climbs down carefully off her soapbox wondering how she got so drunk lol
