Question - I work with a number of people who are enormous (I'm a skinny runt :) ) but in there younger days were clearly very much into sports particularly American Football and Baseball. Someone explained to me that when they go to college and even at High School the sport is so important that if you loose your place on the team you loose your scholarship and are buggered, and because the sports are short term power based rather than long term stamina / fitness based the "kids" are practicaly force fed to keep ther body weights up. Result is enormous appetites and cravings for food. Then they leave school / college, get jobs, cant / no time to do the sport but still have these amazing appetites....net result over eating, obesity and diabetes.    Any truth in this.......?

Yup. As many of us get older, we continue to have the same appetite but we find ourselves participating in less physical activity. Age also effects our metabolism normally causing it to slow.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Weight (7/8/2006 11:30:22 PM)

That's more typical of football than of baseball.  A majority of football players, even at the professional level, are overweight by any standard, and the training staffs, regardless of the bullshit they spout, beef up their players on purpose.  But extra weight is not a major advantage in baseball; in fact, it's usually a disadvantage.

I'm sorry if my response was insensitive to you or yours...   I've never thought of anorexia/bulimia being in the same category as being overweight.

It's more my opinio or my having a problem with anyone thinking me ill because I enjoy good food.   If I hated my body, I would definitely try to sweat more, and eat less of the foods I enjoy.
I've always thought of overweight issues as stemming from too much high calorie foods and not enough exertion, with the people who gained weight due to illness/medication side effects being the exception.
What I hate more than anything is people who apologize for being whatever size god/nature made him/her...  We are supposed to be different.    M

Wolfmoon6 -> RE: Weight (7/9/2006 1:16:38 AM)

Thank you all for you comments and insights both on and off board.  I am in the process of losing my weight.  I have a weight bench in my living-room.  My original post thought wasn't meant to come off as woe is me I am overweight fell sorry for me.  I had read a persons profile and some of the things that were said in just pissed me off.  I included info about myself so people would know what type of person I am and be able to add that into the context of what I was saying.  I feel that to many people look at overweight people and think that person has no self control.  How can they let themselves go like that.  We are looked down at.
There are many different reasons that we are overweight.  For me I can trace my weight gain back to an event that happened to me when I was young.  To others it is an illness to others it is a crutch.  I just wanted to put it out there that we are in this lifestyle for many different reasons all of us.  If we are overweight and in this lifestyle it doesn't mean that we couldn't find love in the vanilla world.

doll -> RE: Weight (7/9/2006 2:17:58 AM)

I gained most of my weight after having  my son and having one of those nightmare birthing experiences that resulted in me being in the hospital over a week and having a home health nurse for over a month and being told that I couldn't do anything strenuous for over a year because I could herniate something.  I am sure we all have our reasons.

fullofgrace -> RE: Weight (7/9/2006 6:48:52 AM)

wolfmoon, one of the parts of my earlier post (that happened to get sucked into the black hole) that i DID want to make sure got up here is that i think it would be REALLY beneficial for you to get a nutritionist and a counselor. both of them can help you with food addiction-related issues. i have been seeing a nutritionist lately (mostly because my metabolism's dead from years of binging and starving) and i've found her support/guidance/suggestions to be really, really helpful, and i've been in counseling on and off for awhile. also, if you've seen one before or go to see one and don't like it, don't stop at the first one you find if it doesn't work. often you won't really click with the first person you visit. *hugs* good luck to you. it seems like you are taking positive steps :)

blktallfullfig...thanks for your response. i usually LOVE reading your posts so i went all O.o at that earlier one. i can understand that view, i guess...it's just different for me because i've vaulted back and forth between anorexic behaviors and compulsive overeating behaviors for 6 or 7 years (up until the last year or so) and that has killed my metabolism which is why i'm currently overweight. however, i know people who exhibit behaviors of any of the three disorders (or a mix) and are overweight, underweight, and all over the board, so i'm used to seeing weight situations that have very little to do with the general public's concepts of what weight you are based on how much you eat (overweight people must eat too much and not exercise, underweight people must never eat and overexercise, etc.). i have to agree with your last statement...i didn't exactly plan on ending up being the size that i am, but i am actually starting to learn to love my body at this size, and it does upset me when people automatically assume i must hate being this size, or i must want to change. i would like to kick my metabolism back into some semblance of existence but my reasons for doing that are beginning to change from "losing weight" to just "being healthy at any weight." we ARE meant to be different. :)

Dtesmoac -> RE: Weight (7/9/2006 6:22:51 PM)

I was watching the world cup final today surrounded by Americans and ended up explaining some of the rules and then got to thinking that the nature of US sports and UK / Europeans sports are very different.

Rugby vs American Football - similar in that speed and physical force is required but for rugby they are out playing for 40 mins each way without a break and it is designed to be a continuous flowwing "war of attrition" came. American football - short bursts of intense action with lots of breaks.

Baseball vs Cricket - baseball again short bursts of action - cricket  "make the bugger stand out there ll day while we drink beer, repeat for 4 days and then have another 4 matchs to settle it.

Football (soccer) - make em run for 90 mins till they die......  "after a bit of play acting and rolling on the ground of course" ........

There seems to be a patern of stamina / aerobic fitness versus short explosive power.....just a thought.

Wolf, You're not alone in this. I know that despite a rigorous diet and exercise program, My weight never seemed to decrease, despite the numerous trips to the gym, the portion controls and everything else society seems to force on those of us whom have been blessed/cursed with a larger shape than what is currently accepted.

Of course, in recent months, I was hospitalized with a serious heart irregularity and in the course of the treatment, the true nature of My weight issue was discovered. In order to correct it, I was perscribed medication that did start to bring the weight down. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints stemming from the loss of my last job, my weight loss has been paused temporarily until I begin to work again, which will be shortly.

The bottom line is, no matter if it is something you do to yourself through addiction, a medical or psychological trauma, or even an unrelated medical condition, the fact is that as long as you know that you're making the effort to correct this, ignore other people's perceptions and prejudices. They have to live with themselves, not you.

I've met some fascinating people here who were unconcerned with my physical nature, and others who, when confronted with certain truths about themselves, attempted to use My physical appearance as a weapon against Me. They failed since I know the truth about Myself and no one can take that away from Me.

Don't let the foul-mouthed, small-minded skinnies beat you down, Wolf. I don't.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Weight (6/4/2007 4:13:18 AM)

I didn't read all of the posts in this thread.  Didn't need to.  They all said the same thing on one side or the other.

Here's the thing...People can get addicted to food.  There is, however, someplace to go.  Just like AA, that is OA - Overeaters Anonymous.  The only group that offers support for WHY one is eating the way that they are.  Weight Watchers works, I know a lot of people who have done it.  So does South Beach, Atkins, blah, blah, blah.  I think that OA would work very well WITH a modified diet.

Sometimes eating healthy IS more expensive.  I can buy enough pasta for a month for the same cost as meat.  That is a big reason that our "working poor" have weight problems.  A steady diet of pasta is not the best weight loss plan, but it is the most affordable thing to eat.

It is very easy to say "put the cookies down and go do something".  It is not so easy to do all the time.

As for the ones who say their diet consists mainly of fast food and they aren't overweight...just 'cause you are skinny doesn't mean you are healthy.  Ever read the book or see the movie "Super Size Me"?

iwannapullurhair -> RE: Weight (6/4/2007 5:17:12 PM)

Try eliminating Soft Drinks from your diet. Jusy have one a day to keep from going nuts. Mt.Dew is worse than Pepsi(doesn't it taste great!). Don't do anything else different. I lost 40 pounds.
