Moist heat provided by an autoclave or pressure cooker is an efficient way to sterilize most materials. At a pressure of 15 psi above atmospheric pressure, water reaches a temperature of approximately 121O C before it boils. Most materials are effectively sterilized by 15 minutes exposure to this temperature. If an autoclave is not available, an ordinary household pressure cooker will effectively sterilize media supplies in small batches.

Someone left an extra O in the number above. 121ºC is the corrected typing? (Press Option key and the Zero key at the same time to type 'º' on a Mac, don't think you can on most PCs.) And a close approximation of correct 15PSI (1 bar) boiling temp if my review of engineering H2O boiling charts is correct.
Even that . . . A recent outbreak of potentially deadly iatrogenic infections in hospitals turned out to be inadequately sterilized endoscopes(?) which Had undergone normal autoclave sterilization procedures. Investigation is continuing into why they weren't effectively cleaned.

Flame 'works' if you leave the object in the hot enough part of the flame long enough for the heat to 'soak' past all surface irregularities. The non-colored part (Base) of flames can be surprisingly cool. The blue part isn't cool at all. Thin metal heat soaks rapidly. A solid metal sound or far thicker glass container takes considerable time for the heat to penetrate past all surfaces and possible hideouts for infectious material long enough to have the desired sterilization effect.

Sounds are no more painful than the sense of adventure leads to for most participants. Foley catheters are a bit smaller than the middle size of most sound sets and no problem for most men? DON'T start at the big end? And like Foleys, LUBE is important!

Maybe the sound(s) used on pg4g were jagged somehow? Dropped one too many times on a brick floor or something. Leaving open scars in the urethra sounds dangerous, frankly. Lots of things could go wrong -- including kidney stones if you keep yourself from peeing because of pain.

I've never heard anyone talk about sounds being painful before. It's always been "invasive" and "a pleasurable vibration that isn't like anything else I've ever felt." Etc.

Jagged? No. Probably oversized for me, but I was a growing teenager and I was into the pain. And I was somewhat brutal to myself so yeah. It can be torturous. Anything even slightly sharp (say a slight sharp ridge) and it's torture.

But smooth, soft use of sounds that are appropriately sized will probably not cause pain, and can be mighty enjoyable. You're right: invasive and the weirdest feeling of being masturbated from the inside out. Just be careful with a newbie who's never used them cos it's worse than being kicked hard in the balls. Play extremely carefully.

The problem with being brutal with sounds is, you can easily damage the sphincter and that can make you incontinent.

I have to wonder what you were sticking down your pee hole. You say a slight sharp ridge and its torture. Sounds don't have sharp ridges.

I have introduced a lot of guys to sounds and it certainly wasn't painful popping their cherry.

The problem with only killing 99.9% of germs is, that 1% could well be MRSA (meticillin-resistant staphylococcus aureusis) and that's why they don't use dettol in hospitals any more.

As far as sterilizing with a flame, there is a good chance you will get soot deposits on the instrument and just in case you would have to wipe it over, which of course deems the instrument un-sterile!

Correct, sounds don't have sharp ridges. Some urethral toys do, however. I think you're mixing my words.

The first times I tried that were extremely painful were with sounds, but they were slightly too large for me.

And as for the comments as to jagged? No. But I have used sterile urethral toys with a slight 'raise' in the middle. Specifically, a dual-poled electro-sex sound. The plastic that separate the two ends, so as to create an electric circuit between them, was extremely painful. It scratched on the way in and out. Any toy designed for that region that is not silky smooth, the slightest ridge, bump, etc is extremely sensitive.

I'm always careful that what I was doing was always smart, safe, and would never damage me.

Back in the days before antibiotics....

Using a heated rod to open the urethra after it closed off from a urinary tract infection.

Shudder!

Speaking of back in the days, I was trying to find a reference for how to heat sterilize a sound for insertion into the penis, when all I could find was this!

Watch the miniseries "Sleeper Cell" to hear all about sterilizing sounds!
