piggylez -> Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 12:34:21 AM)

Okay, I'm going to ask it here because this is the Forum I view most and not really sure where I could post a question like this...

SOOOOOO.... I've made a chat acquaintance that says they're from the Midwest. But, sure seems active on PST. (I have other things behind why I continue to chat with this person). Well, I'm guessing that what ever Zip Code you put in your Profile, that's where CM will "register" your location? But what if they aren't in the Midwest but are in Cali, is there a way that their message time stamps could still reflect Midwest time versus Pacific Standard?

hlen5 -> RE: Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 12:42:54 AM)

I know I cm-ed with someone before and his profile said he 1200+ miles away. The place named on his profile was less than 200 miles. I think the distance between one another is ISP to ISP. You can type any location in that you like, I think.

piggylez -> RE: Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 12:51:12 AM)

Hmmmmmm... interesting. Yes, this "acquaintance" doesn't state a specific Location, just the state. I honestly have a strong feeling they're in my town. But they copied and pasted a message to me that they had received, and the time reflects Midwest... I dunno could be a REALLY WEIRD coincidence, or they're going thru different IPs, which I think is ridiculous. But who am I to say? Thank You for the response! :)

piggylez -> RE: Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 1:34:40 AM)

I know it must be a silly inquiry, but I know with the Internet, Sky is the limit. Maybe I'm not asking it in the right way? Or maybe my question requires a more IT answer. Ugh, Seriously! Thank You for reading at least. :)

mummyman321 -> RE: Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 5:26:34 AM)

The location (IE city & state) comes from whatever the user puts in his/her profile
The distance from you to him stated when you look at his/her profile is the distance from the 2 area codes each user put in his/her profile

ISP's are not accurate for determining location.

LadyPact -> RE: Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 8:27:15 AM)

Doesn't take an IT answer. I'm the biggest computer twit around here.

Yes, your location is dedicated by the zip code that you enter to the site. Doesn't really have to be the one you are living in. You can plop any five digits in there for the United States and the corresponding place is where the site will give as your locale as far as distance searches and such. For example, if a person moves, they have to enter their new zip code, or they will still be considered in the old one for things like members within a hundred miles, etc.

piggylez -> RE: Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 11:19:07 AM)

Cool. Thanks for the responses! That makes sense. I guess I'm just one of those lucky ones that have too many coincidences occurring at the same time. Thanks a bunch!

Rawni -> RE: Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 11:36:44 AM)

I guess I don't get what time has to do with anything. I sure wouldn't use anything like that to figure out or convict on. lol I am interested in how you would get the ip of someone that is only contacting you from this site. Yahoo... they expose you, thus I don't use their email service, but this site doesn't show the ip unless you are in a private chat room with a chat software that shows that. If you can do it without that... do drop me an email and tell me how! lol

Switching ip's can be interesting and will be an indicator to me that 'maybe' things aren't on the up and up. If they are getting on by cell phone or something, that doesn't mean much for location. If it changes drastically, I would be watching for other signs and if they are there... I would be walkin not talkin.

piggylez -> RE: Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 11:49:02 AM)

Hahaha. Okay in my last mesaage, when I referred to "time", I meant over a period of time. Not an exact time, like in my original message.

And true, if there are signs that make me raise questions, then I probably already know the answer. Start walkin not talkin. Just a shame because I was starting to really enjoy the chat. I'm still new, so there will be more. Thank You! :)

Rawni -> RE: Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 11:57:28 AM)

I think where people get hung up is in how they look at things when they first start talking to someone. Personally, I tend to figure, most are going to be all talk and some can be entertaining to some degree, but most will actually be 'talkin' for a cause and I am not talking charity other than on a personal level. They want something. Is that something sincere? There are some real sincere and enjoyable people. Show me a con-person that isn't. Show me a scammer that isn't playing the 'game' so to speak.

I look at where I am and the potential for dishonesty and go from there. That doesn't mean that I do a background check on everyone I talk to. It means, I keep myself on a level playing field by not being too excited, too needy or too anything that would give the dishonest player, power in some manner.

It isn't about 'them' it is about 'us'. So if you are in a hurry or needy, you are a walking opportunity for the insincere. Don't be that person and those insincere people won't have much of an effect. You roll your eyes, laugh and move on.

Asking for their phone number typically eliminates are large majority of people who never intend to meet
Asking to meet them in person knocks another big chunk out
Asking to rest to pay dinner weeds out some more
After that you are on your own to figure it out [8D]

I don't usually post, but I thought I'd answer this, since I have some information that differs from the rest.

As you can see from my profile, I have been on this site for quite some time. When I created my profile in 2005 I was living in Charleston, SC, but in 2006 I moved back to my home state of Ohio. However, whenever I view people's profiles, the "distance from" is always measured from the place I created my profile (Charleston, SC). If I click on the "newest local users" it also shows me users from Charleston. If I change the location there to Ohio, it will still go back to SC the next time I come onto the site.

mummyman321 -> RE: Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 12:13:54 PM)

Did you change the zip code for your account?

I can change my profile city and state location but that does not change the distance I am from someone. When I change the zip code for my account then the distance changes and is accurate. I am using IE 11, 64 bit version

Is it possible that their activity follows their schedule in some way?
Either work or school?
Some people are just night owls, no matter where they live.

piggylez -> RE: Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 1:44:23 PM)

Thank You for all you words of advice. I'm new to CM but spent a good chunk of my life on, the ever so wonderful, A-O-HeLL *snickers* Chat rooms, IMs and stuff. Made some friends, made some enemies, found a partner or two, and have had run ins with Perpetrators. Here, I really just like chatting and having fun. I do have a guard up and try not to get so into every little encounter. I like to say that, I keep my Third Eye open....

It did occur to me to ask this user for their number. Also, probably distractions in my personal life could be throwing things off. I'm just going to use much more caution with my dealings with people here. :)

I did take into consideration of people's schedules and night owls. As I am a night owl myself. :) Pretty much, what caught my attention was the timing of my conversations with a user. Like, one would log off and the other would jump on. I never really noticed the coincidence, but when I took a moment to look at it, the coincidences are starting to look a bit consistent. I'm not trying to have a relationship with anyone, just odd as to what this person is getting from it. GRrRRrrrRrr, people! haha! Really, at the end, I have to laugh at myself :)

I do have to add that one I'm almost positive I know the deal, but because of that the other has become suspect. *shaking my head*

There are so many socks running around this place, we'd have to get a dresser the size of the empire state building to put them all in a drawer.

When I was looking, I'd exchange an email or two, then ask for a phone number and best time to call. If that was not forthcoming, that was the end of it. Saved bundles of time.

piggylez -> RE: Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 7:25:02 PM)

*** UPDATE ***

Alrighty, started to do a bit of scanning. And feel a little more at ease. A good reminder to be ready to be on your toes,... As I continue with a Third Eye open.

Thank You all so much for your responses!

Not completely resolved yet, but shall see as the Collar Turns ;)

DesFIP -> RE: Profile Locations & Time Stamps... Legitimacy? (2/5/2014 10:32:40 PM)

A lot of women don't want to hand out their phone number though. If you are seriously searching for a partner, then you should get one of those month at a time phones so if someone turns stalker, you just hand it back.

You might do better to ask if she's going to a public event any time soon and that you would love to meet her there. That way you both are safe, and if the other doesn't show, you're still doing something fun.
