Similar concept for increasing fruit yield but done differently.

In a cherry tree, the main trunk is severely lowered and the side branches allowed to grow out and up so there is an open space i the center of the tree limbs. The limbs are kept trimmed low enough they can be easily reached with a simple step ladder. The tree is held to about 10-12 ft height with an open space above a trunk kept trimmed to about 8 foot height. This maximizes fruit production and the ability to harvest.

I did this myself on some cherry trees and drove past an apple orchard that did this every day for years. Loved that orchard in the fall with all the apple wood "free - you haul away"... kept the smoker stocked as well as the fireplace.
