I'm in the minority, I don't like it. I think it clogs new threads off of the first page..and in most cases you're replying to a ghost.

While this may be true in many cases, I've come across some very informative older threads (only as far back as 2012) that had a lot of good stuff. The opinions expressed stood on their own, without needing further interaction with the original poster. You might not be able to get clarification anymore from previous contributors, or a timely response from the OP, but that isn't always pertinent. Why keep rehashing the same topics when there's already a slew of good points made in the past which are still valid today?

Now, dredging up something from the last decade might be outdated and that subject matter may require a fresh infusion of perspectives. If it's a dead, truly necro thread, then we can choose to ignore it and it'll return back to the annals of history.

A compromise on narco'd threads.... After a certain period of time, 9 months seems about right, bringing it up "auto-locks" it with a message to the person bringing it up something like "Please quote what brought you here and start a new one."

I agree about the old posters might not be members and most of the time, bringing an old thread up IS to just add new perspective to some old point.

I also agree that sometimes someone just MIGHT have something new to say, so the compromise above gives them a chance to do so, quoting A post from the old string first..... Also, the first post might start out (again, auto-magically) with a link to the start of the OLD thread, as well as the particular quote being brought up by the new poster.

This way Mods aren't needing to keep an eye out for narco'd threads and don't have to add a message that narco-ing is not allowed.  (Maybe that's why they stopped enforcing that policy.  Too much work added onto the REALLY important stuff they do, y'know?)

Seriously Lance. That is the most brilliant solution I've heard. Trust me, I'm way too stoopid to come up with that. I'm in awe.

If it's a decent thread with good info/opinions/debate - why not just link to it??
You don't need to rehash it. Link it.

I'm with Oside and LP.... necro'd threads should stay locked.
If nothing has happened in 3 months, it needs to be frozen for prosperity and reference.
I really don't see the point in resurecting an old thread.

It is a good idea, but I don't know if it can be done. Since there aren't allowed any additional changes that might include coding (or anything the owner of the site would have to spend money on) would that mean that a Mod would have to go in there and lock threads individually?

(Computer twit asking questions here, so be patient with Me.)
