Much as that graphic is one of GotSteel's favorites in his never ending campaign of anti-religious activism, we've known for decades that there is no direct connection between the belief that homosexual acts are sinful and a fear and loathing of homosexuals (Oxford, Collins, MacMillan, Webster's). Not to put too fine a point on it, in its 2013 polling Pew Research found 65% of mainline Protestants and 71% of Catholics accepting of homosexuality. That's higher than the 60% acceptance rate among Americans overall. Only 31% of Americans still think homosexuality should be discouraged, and almost half of them give a reason other than religion.
The authors investigated the role of homosexual arousal in exclusively heterosexual men who admitted negative affect toward homosexual individuals. Participants consisted of a group of homophobic men (n = 35) and a group of nonhomophobic men (n = 29); they were assigned to groups on the basis of their scores on the Index of Homophobia (W. W. Hudson & W. A. Ricketts, 1980). The men were exposed to sexually explicit erotic stimuli consisting of heterosexual, male homosexual, and lesbian videotapes, and changes in penile circumference were monitored... Both groups exhibited increases in penile circumference to the heterosexual and female homosexual videos. Only the homophobic men showed an increase in penile erection to male homosexual stimuli. ~J.
