As for downloading a noise file to your PC so you can play it...why bother when all you have to do is set your radio or tv to a static station (hit the wrong button on your remote to bump it off satellite tv) and play THAT...cats HATE that hissing sound.

Really? I never knew that. I wonder if it's because it makes them think of a much larger cat hissing at them?

ETA: Apparently lion dung (which can be bought at pet shops) will deter cats. However, sadly, it stinks - which would kind of defeat the object for many.

Now that you've clarified, I'm pretty sure the cat knows you hate him. He's going to continue to stare at you because fuck you, he's a cat.

When MP and I first got together I had a black cat named Dude. Yes, I really named him Dude, even though the papers from the shelter said his name was Rudy. He was the type of cat who would jump up on the dresser, look right at you, and knock one thing off of it with his paw. He'd just stare at you. We took up a saying about it. "I'm a cat. Whatcha gonna do?"

Squirtgun.

If anyone knows of a way to train a 9 month kitten not to turn on the traction control and charge up the full length of my body at 2:00 a.m., I wouldn't mind hearing that one. It happens too quick to respond with the catapult method.

Yep its lunatic and deranged to not be blown over by your self perceive wit, intelligence and humor. Especially while intentionally ttrying to be cruel to a neighborhood animal. You must be an utter joy for people with kids with all that kind attitude and intelligent musings.

I just can't help 'musing', LL. Right now, for instance, the words 'vinegary' and 'old trout' spring to mind.

In defense of Peon, he came and hung out with us for a couple of days a while back, while my dogs are pretty huge beasts, but super friendly and cuddly, I'm the first one to admit, that my cats are freaking monsters who put their claws into people if they feel they aren't getting the attention they are due, my best bet against burglars is the bark of the dogs and the claws of the cats if somebody should dare to disturb them. Think about 2 Garfields with very sharp teeth and claws, if they'd be children, MDs would have put them on riatlin. They climbed up Peon's legs and all he did was gently shoe them off, with a very contorted face and tears in his eyes, didn't even squirt them...

Seriously, if everybody who is annoyed by cats would just play a sound they dislike to keep them away, we might not ever need animal protection.

Thanks, Lady C. But just to say, I really, really don't mind cats. I had a great time at your place with you, H and the menagerie.

Did a bit of fact checking before replying...

Unless you have high end computer speakers from Bose or Klipsch your computer speakers cut off at 20,000 Hz. The annoyance tone is a higher frequency than that.

I checked the settings on my electronic bug repeller... it cycles from 30,000 Hz to 35,000 Hz. Nope not getting that high out of a computer speaker. BTW, the dog WILL NOT enter my shop where the electronic bug repeller dwells but stands at the door and barks to get my attention.

Ah . . . . Thanks, MT.

You know, another thing I'm wondering is whether high frequency noises might explain this oft-heard phenomenon of dogs refusing to enter certain buildings that are thought to be haunted.

Please refrain from making personal attacks. Some of the heavy snark is very close to the line, so everyone may want to pull back on that as well.

Thanks for being a part of CollarMe,

Another thought: what about the speakers on mobile phones? It seems sort of feasible to come up with an app that'll deter mosquitoes and midges. That'd certainly be damned useful camping up in the Highlands.
