From the link Domken was so helpful as to supply, we can happily confirm that the proposal which sparked this conversation has been killed by those who care about a free press, and the obligation to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.

The FCC Chair has come forward to say the questions were out of bounds, the study outline will be rewritten, and the FCC will not be conducting questionings of media owners, editors, or journalists

G'nite, Ken, and thanks again for the accidentally providing the nail in the coffin.

The FCC is required by long existing law to produce a report every 3 years. This study was to be part of that report.

Which is exactly what I said in post 115, Ken. Only the most tenuous shred of veracity to make such a claim.

Since you provided the link though, let's have a look at what the FCC had to say for themselves, shall we?

quote:

– FCC Spokesperson Shannon Gilson issued the following statement today:

“By law, the FCC must report to Congress every three years on the barriers that may prevent
entrepreneurs and small business from competing in the media marketplace, and pursue policies to
eliminate those barriers. To fulfill that obligation in a meaningful way, the FCC's Office of
Communications Business Opportunities consulted with academic researchers in 2012
and selected a
contractor to design a study which would inform the FCC’s report to Congress. Last summer, the
proposed study was put out for public comment and one pilot to test the study design in a single
marketplace – Columbia, S.C. – was planned.

“However, in the course of FCC review and public comment, concerns were raised that some of the
questions may not have been appropriate. Chairman Wheeler agreed that survey questions in the study
directed toward media outlet managers, news directors, and reporters overstepped the bounds of what is
required.
Last week, Chairman Wheeler informed lawmakers that that Commission has no intention of
regulating political or other speech of journalists or broadcasters and would be modifying the draft study.

Yesterday, the Chairman directed that those questions be removed entirely.

“To be clear, media owners and journalists will no longer be asked to participate in the Columbia, S.C.
pilot study.
The pilot will not be undertaken until a new study design is final. Any subsequent market
studies conducted by the FCC, if determined necessary, will not seek participation from or include
questions for media owners, news directors or reporters.

“Any suggestion that the FCC intends to regulate the speech of news media or plans to put monitors in
America's newsrooms is false. The FCC looks forward to fulfilling its obligation to Congress to report on
barriers to entry into the communications marketplace, and is currently revising its proposed study to
achieve that goal.”

Now, what was it you were saying?

How gullible can Liberals be? Do you think the FCC is going to say, "We are going to intimidate the stations that don't agree with the Administrations' way of thinking by placing "watchdogs" in their stations." Do you think Hitler was dumb enough to tell the truth, and say, "One of our plans is to kill Jews and anybody else we don't like!"

I don't blame Hitler as much as all the fools who followed him. Power takes the masses. A brain and heart is a terrible thing to waste.

Government doesn't need to be monitoring and controlling the press, that's crazy. Only in cases of extreme hate and prejudice being speeled then shut the haters down.
Oh yah that's right, use staples if they have too (lol Ok im kidding, but shut em down)

Don't worry be happy

The right wing thrives off of lies, misinformation, and hate. Thats what the whole issue is about. They see the truth as something which isn't real, and will fight to continue spewing said mistruth, claiming it's their right. Here in canada, we have laws in place which prevent news sources from promoting untrue news, which is one reason why we don't have a Canadian fox news, as they realized they wouldn't be able to do what they do in the states.

It is no wonder you think the right thrives on lies, big brother says so.

What should the government be for?  And Slick, I know nutsackers are not reality based, but I think the government has, particularly in republican administrations since nixon, pretty much done just that.

And of course the democrats as well.  Most politicians are trying to manage the news in one form or another

Alright, we are in agreement that the FCC "study" was the first step to censorship of the media.

NO, I am not being sarcastic.

However, considering how top heavy the US Government has become, what can we as citizens do to prevent it from happening? This only came to light because some bureaucrat actually had a brain and was not a mindless robot appointee. What if he had kept his mouth shut?

Seriously, look at the total number of government agencies here. and most of these agencies have overlapping areas of responsibility.

You can watch Fox.... where you will get true stories about how Obama funded a Muslim Museum and how to fight those corrupt bureaucrats in Congress.

Um, you are aware that the origin of this story was on a News Satire website? None of the story is true? And FOX news failed to check the sources thus proving they (FOX News) are complete idiots and would not have the collective brain power to figure out that they need to come in out of a hail storm during an F5 tornado while a volcano was erupting a block away?

Butch, please understand:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

That means if a news outlet wants to rant about a story that has no basis in fact, or makes claims about a law that are untrue, claim a person has a religious affiliation that is false, make acquisitions that the President follows the philosophy of a genocidal maniac, they are well within their legal rights to do so.

If you want truth in news broadcasting, move to Canada.

If you want to watch people make complete asses of them selves in the name of a free press, watch any one of the American News Broadcast channels.

If you want American new agencies to broadcast nothing but the truth, I suggest you convince congress to establish and fund a new agency, the Thought Police.

Other than this study, my biggest complaint is that the FCC will not allow the broadcast of lingerie flag football on the regular networks... Not that any other network broadcasts it.

This in my opinion is a big a travesty as any other.

But then I am a dirty old geezer critter.

jlf as I previously posted the control of the air ways by the FCC is constitutional and proven so in the courts.. They do have the right to censor as they see fit... They only have to do it... If they decide to censor a news outlet for false reporting they can do it.

It's not a constitutional question at all... it is simply a policy question.

I am not naive... I know in today's political climate it will not happen... but to me that is a shame and a disgrace. But as an opinion I am just expressing it... over and over and over...
