jlf as I previously posted the control of the air ways by the FCC is constitutional and proven so in the courts.. They do have the right to censor as they see fit... They only have to do it... If they decide to censor a news outlet for false reporting they can do it.

It's not a constitutional question at all... it is simply a policy question.

I am not naive... I know in today's political climate it will not happen... but to me that is a shame and a disgrace. But as an opinion I am just expressing it... over and over and over...[:D]

When the government dictates the truth, the truth is that the government does no wrong.

My guess, Jlf, is that we are seeing a mindless regurgitation of a lame ass claim made by some Obamapologist outlet, and that the closest it might come to a foundation in fact would be that the FCC is supposed to keep their guidelines for broadcast license renewals up to date.

The forum newbie might not know any better than to try such nonsense in a place of diverse opinion like this, but I'm not going to able to resist sticking it to Polite for snuggling up to such a ridiculous claim, just so he can throw a little poo.

My bad, I took the post as saying it was passed before Obama took office as read.

Nice to know at least one of us is big enough to admit we got it wrong huh.

WheelzofSteel -> RE: Freaking Orwellian (2/24/2014 4:11:41 PM)

The airwaves belong to the People, not the Government and this blatant attempt by Obama to set himself up as a dictator of the airwaves, when taken with the repeal of laws against Government propaganda in America is sick.

I think that now all Americans must unite regardless of political views or beliefs to restore the Feds to Constitutional legitimacy and say in no uncertain terms that even though times may change our national ideals remain constant, because I'm a Progressive and I'm proud to be one but such a culture of disrespect for the Constitution, the Founding Fathers and the spirit of the American Revolution are not Progressive values. Just think what hell we would be living under in 2017 if Scott Walker or Jeb Bush or Liz Cheney get these powers.

The British Empire was not the good guys in the Revolution, no matter how much people try to say the Revolution was actually about slavery (and therefore bad) and we must not ever surrender any of the Bill of Rights under any circumstances, ever, no matter how much people bleat that "Times have changed...THINK OF THE DEAD CHILDREN" blah blah blah.

Actually, reading the article would have helped, the maker of the statement clearly did not do this, and it seems that you failed to double check the statement, indicating that you may have a bias.

Personally, considering I voted for the idiot twice, and my discouragement has grown exponentially, I am beginning to long for the good old days of Bush Jr, and should a grandson of said president be old enough to run for the office, I may be tempted to vote for him, or Jeb, or Foghorn Leghorn, of marvin the Martian, or the best choice Wile. E. Coyote.

This is since there is not a genetist who will defy international law and clone some former presidents to get some decent leadership in the oval office.

Politesub53 -> RE: Freaking Orwellian (2/24/2014 4:16:26 PM)

Yep..... all I could find on the FCC is how they failed to investigate the phone tapping scandal under Junior. [;)]

The right wing thrives off of lies, misinformation, and hate. Thats what the whole issue is about. They see the truth as something which isn't real, and will fight to continue spewing said mistruth, claiming it's their right. Here in canada, we have laws in place which prevent news sources from promoting untrue news, which is one reason why we don't have a Canadian fox news, as they realized they wouldn't be able to do what they do in the states.

Y'know, even by the low expectations I have developed towards our friends to the north, that's an awfully ignorant post.

Let me explain to how it works in a free country. The differences are fundamental, and often very difficult for people who grew up on a different version of Schoolhouse Rock to wrap their heads around.

Freedom of the Press is not something they are given by government, or by some ancient grant from some ancient king. The First Amendment tells the US government that it has no right to meddle. Can you grasp that?

The government has NO RIGHT to be deciding what is true, and what is not, in terms of the information the media puts out.

You can watch Fox.... where you will get true stories about how Obama funded a Muslim Museum and how to fight those corrupt bureaucrats in Congress.

Butch

Or you can watch CBS, and get a national broadcast news report that is based on blatant forgeries. What happens to networks that do that? The network that was once home to the most trusted man in America still hasn't recovered from Dan Rather's disgrace of his profession.

I have to admit, Butch, I'm losing quite a bit of respect you, as I'm seeing your posts to this thread. Ben Franklin is often cited as saying that those who would trade essential liberties for temporary safety would have (and deserve) neither. What might he say of someone willing to chuck the free press, for the sake of not having to change the channel, or seek out alternative sources?

Other than this study, my biggest complaint is that the FCC will not allow the broadcast of lingerie flag football on the regular networks... Not that any other network broadcasts it.

It's funny how the standards for broadcast decency evolve, Jlf. "Ass" used to be one of the words that would cause problems. Of course, now we hear "ass" on broadcast television pretty casually.

Did you know that the tipping point on that came from Bush the 1st, when he said he had "kicked a little ass" in a campaign debate, and they let it go out on the air?

Of course, the other funny thing I recall from the days before cable was that PBS was the only place you might hope to see tits on TV - my guess was that it was automatically considered artistic use, when Masterpiece Theater did it.

Look, even in the sixties and seventies there were women in bikinis on tv, so what is wrong with pretty women playing flag football in lingerie?

I believe the standard is "prurient interest," Jlf, which I think is best understood as, that which will appeal mostly to perverts. Speaking as a pervert, I can appreciate your concern. Translating again, though, it means they have to be at least a little bit sneaky about.

Can't you get Baywatch on Youtube?

I agree with this whole heartedly... I'll bet it would not be hard to find examples in all the public networks.

If there were another way to solve the problem of network bias and false or omitted reporting I am all for it. Lets hear some alternate ideas that have a chance in hell of working.

I believe if Ben Franklin were alive today and was a witness to our news reporting... he would have another nifty quote that would sound a lot different. I can't believe he would abide the political propaganda that passes as news today without demanding change.

I don't mean to sound so radical... and if someone had an idea to rectify the media mess without the government having to step in I would listen to it. But right now the type of reporting we suffer could be dangerous... It could easily start another Iraq or Somalia unless these political agendas are reined in.

As far as respect goes I have to respect myself first and hope others do as well but I can only be me.

Butch

Not as dangerous as letting the government decide what "the truth" is. That is why the Germans knew
freemasons were a threat to the nation.

kdsub -> RE: Freaking Orwellian (2/24/2014 8:46:34 PM)

Bama why can't you get it through your head I am NOT talking about truth... Truth is what we make it... I am strictly talking about facts... non editorialized facts...Checking strict facts will not be hard... or politicized.

As I said to TheHeretic come up with a better idea...any idea... unless you don't believe there is a problem.

Butch

Then I believe you aren't much aware of either Ben Franklin, or how the press was working in his day, Butch, or how Franklin himself earned a nice living from it.

I appreciate where you are coming from, but I don't care, and have no interest in finding compromise on the subject of granting our government any sort of censorship powers. Period.

kdsub -> RE: Freaking Orwellian (2/24/2014 9:08:16 PM)

I am not asking you to change your mind... I understand your mind is set as is mine... I was hoping however that you at least understood the possible consequences of politicized news reporting and would suggest a possible remedy. No compromise is need... just a good idea. I am not set in my thinking and could easily change my mind if a practical solution was proposed.

But just sticking your head in the sand and quoting Ben Franklin will change nothing... Again unless of course you believe change is not needed.

Butch

The networks are too political, but letting the government decide what the facts are is much more dangerous.
The news reported the Gulf of Tonkin as fact because that is what the government said the facts were.
When the government doesn't like something it isn't a fact.
Do you remember the Pearl Miss school shooting?
I had to read 4 newspapers and subject the stories to serious evaluation to find out, months before it was officially
admitted, that it had been stopped by an armed teacher.
It didn't fit the government position so the papers danced around it.
The party line for years has been "the recovery" when the truth is we are sinking deeper all the time.
And this is without the government dictating what the "facts" are but several news agencies having taken sides.
