More often than not, people with 10,000+ plus posts on a board adopt a proprietary/ownership stance that is often at odds with fundamental reality.

... They have disappeared up their own internet asses.

I thought the quote hilighted in red was hilarious. Not saying I agree with the sentiment, although I did go check to see what my post count was. I guess I'm only halfway to a new hobby of sphincter spelunking?

address topics with constructive criticisms rather than rash judgments and cruel, nonsensical cynicism.

Perhaps you could do something constructive and lead by example.

This would be far more constructive than extending a challenge, which by definition elicits competition and even defiance... hardly the basis for cooperation and helpfulness. But then neither is your suggestion <ahem> in the thread quoted below exactly conducive to warm fuzzies and gratitude for your advice :

"Anyway, based on statistics I read into such as height/weight and overall profile sincerity suggest that your ideal match is possibly a leprechaun. Have you tried any leprechaun dating sites? "

Just where does this fall in the "constructive criticism/nonsensical cynicism" continuum?

To the old adage, "Don't say anything if you don't have something nice to say," which is of a certain perspective and opinion, I'd like to challenge everyone to try and follow suit. What I've read numerous times and defended as, "I was being me... I was being blunt... I was being helpful in my own way... ," I say is just years of poor social practice.

I'm certain that some of you are going to be more acerbic and sardonic in personality--no one is telling you not to be yourselves. Instead what I would be asking is to address topics with constructive criticisms rather than rash judgments and cruel, nonsensical cynicism. If you cannot see the other person's perspective by any stretch, then you've failed at "helping" already. There are always more positive ways to give your opinion and then leave it be; some posters simply aren't going to heed good advice regardless of how beneficial it may be. What bothers me is the attention by way of derision that commonly follows in many threads with ongoing rebuttals.

There was a posting about retaining new posters: why on Earth would someone want to participate in the active "posse law" that commonly overtakes threads? I'll come short of calling it flat-out bullying, but honestly, this is currently a golf course with members you wouldn't want to play one hole with, much-less eighteen.

This post started out with "I extend a challenge"....and then....there was no challenge.

I'm going to go back to watching the Bullwinkle and Rocky DVD's my brother gave me for Chritmas.

I believe in practicing humility and civility, especially on the internet.

We must acknowledge the limitations of our knowledge.

If we only know a person from a few posts on a message board them we only know a tiny piece of them,
which means that we don't really know them at all.

It behooves us to always keep this mind when we are forming judgments about other people and to continually ask our self
how much do we really know and how much are we filling in the blanks with our own biases and preconceptions? Otherwise we risk
giving offence.

When we give offence, we diminish communication because the offended party focuses on the hurt you've caused them and not your words.

Of course, sometimes you come across a total dick and you can't help but think to yourself, oh man, I just got to fuck with this asshole.
