****** Now, Nugent is a bit player, a bomb-thrower not worthy of much attention in his own right, but the fact that he and so many like him feel at home within the Republican Party and aligned with conservative causes is.

Who would someone like Nugent align himself with if not the Republicans? If he's going to pick a side, it can't be the Democrats and that doesn't leave a lot of options.

What surprises me is how the Republicans acquiesce to their resident wingnuts. It's not like the Pat Robertson types have other parties to pick either.

actually there are a lot of choices

Tkman117 -> RE: Republicans on Wrong Side of Demographics (2/24/2014 7:12:59 PM)

Sure there are a lot of choices, but logically, which one do you think is really their likely choice?

If Republicans aquiesced as you claim, Mitt Romney would have been elected in 2012.

I guess Republicans didn't aquiesce enough to go out and vote!

No wonder they want to pass Voter ID laws wherever possible. If they work as intended, it will help whittle down the 25% figure of minority voters.

Here's one point:

cloudboy -> RE: Republicans on Wrong Side of Demographics (2/24/2014 7:32:03 PM)

There are cross-over issues too, and the Republicans have a blind eye for this one:

Lucy, I like your style.

However you have neglected a large demographic, archers and crossbow users.

Just saying.

Lucylastic -> RE: Republicans on Wrong Side of Demographics (2/25/2014 5:48:43 AM)

true...my bad*goes off to look for a fucked up robin hood type picture...apropos to the repubs...

crazyml -> RE: Republicans on Wrong Side of Demographics (2/25/2014 5:57:42 AM)

This may well come as a complete fucking shock to you... so brace yourself.

Not all republicans are crazy extremists.

I am constantly astonished when I travel in the USA by my regular discovery of Republican voters that care for the environment, believe that climate change is real, support a woman's right to control her body and.... shudder... even favour tougher gun control.

If you're a liberal, you would profit far more from engagement with "regular" or "middle of the road" republicans... because I have a sense that quite a few of them frel as if their own party is spinning way out to the right.

mnottertail -> RE: Republicans on Wrong Side of Demographics (2/25/2014 5:59:51 AM)

Like others, they are a silent majority, in a world that is koinnus quatsi

I agree, not all Republicans or conservatives are crazy extremists.

However, you have to admit that the ones that are kinda, sorta stand out so large that the rest of the right tend to become invisible. You know, kinda like a drop dead gorgeous woman nude in a bikini contest lineup. The other women are great looking to, but you really dont see them.

And for the people that are more into cars than good looking women, image a line up of mini vans and in the middle is a 1969 full hemi road runner. You can tell me every detail about the mopar classic but you probably couldnt tell me the prevalent color of mini vans.

Lol, dude I'm not advocating for one side over the other. Cloud boy made the major point that should be addressed. Which is that there is no party that advocates extremism the way the right wing republicans/tea party does. I mean, you hardly see that with the liberal parties around the world, more often than not they outright condemn such actions as they're not liberal in nature. They don't represent what it means to be liberals. I could likely say the same with moderate conservatives, which has enough grey area that I at times may be inclined to agree with moderate conservative policies, but not the extreme ones. I completely disagree with extremism of any kind, it's sickening and juvenile. If you want to solves problems in this world, do it the right way within the law. Not by attacking people or laying booby traps.

I never really thought that I would actually see someone maintain the "violence never solves anything" outside of a classroom.

From Lt. Col. Jean V. Dubois (Ret.):

"I'm sure the city fathers of Carthage would be glad to know that. . . .

Anyone who clings to the historically untrue and thoroughly immoral doctrine that violence never settles anything I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler could referee and the jury might well be the Dodo, the Great Auk, and the Passenger Pigeon. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history that has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and their freedoms."

Quoting Heinlein?

I thought that it was pretty obvious. I also thought that it was appropriate as he grew up with his parents being part of the Pendergast political machine. [:D]

cloudboy -> RE: Republicans on Wrong Side of Demographics (2/25/2014 6:40:39 AM)

The point is about accommodating extremists instead of disavowaling them. It is about including bigotry, religious intolerance, and xenophobia under their big tent. While they do this, how can they expect to draw from the growing minority vote?

Right now the strategy is to double down and pass Voter ID laws. At best this is a short term strategy.

cloudboy -> RE: Republicans on Wrong Side of Demographics (2/25/2014 6:42:49 AM)

I agree with the idea of entitlement reform, but the Democrats linked it to closing Corporate Tax loopholes, and so the Republicans balked at putting a deal together.

Like I've said, still hunter gatherers competing in world of manipulated scarcity. All modern man has done, is just left his caves and huts.

In reply to that cartoon, I guess McConnell could pay for them out of his 3 billion in pork.
