When I was looking, I just spent enough time to get a sense that he had potential. I learned the hard way to not get emotionally invested before we saw if there was chemistry in person. If this doesn't help, try meeting them at local BDSM events that you were planning to attend anyway. That way, you're already there and if he shows, great, and if not, no loss.
