We are looking after the Beagle of friends quite often, trust me that dog is *not bright* and that is the kindest way I can put it, the cats usually slap him around, all they seem to be interested in is food and sniffing around, this particular Beagle is also gay and tried to hump my male Dobie (not met with approval by Dobie), a slightly vicious bastard who bit me when I told him to get off the sofa, bit hubby in the face when he told him to get off the sofa.... Each time it was an effort to get the Beagle out of a Dobie mouth in one piece, as Dobies don't take kindly to their pack leaders being bitten. I don't blame the Beagle, his owner thinks explaining things to the dog will work and she is very much the hippie dippy kind who was shocked that when her Beagle bit me, that I grabbed him by the neck and told him to go on his back, apparently I should have told him why it isn't acceptable and not upset the poor thing... And when he bit hubby in the face, she was worried that the Beagle is upset, H just growled "Never mind, I'm just bleeding"

Wow. I have never seen a bitey beagle. Your friend needs a swift kick in the rear.

She's another person who just should not have a dog, when we look after the Beagle, we usually take him to the vet, as she thinks all the stuff (like a massive bacterial infection on his nose that needed antibiotic cream and him having antibiotics) is just psychosomatic, she's a teacher, what can I say? The Beagle is really old now and she is thinking about getting a Collie if he passes away, that is a freaking disaster in the making...

I do love animals, I really do, but I don't think telling my dogs why it is wrong what they do works, they just need to be told NO, she treats him like a child, which is actually the root of the problem, her husband treats him like a dog and the dog likes him and adores him, unfortunately he is away most of the time and she is terrified when the dog growls at her and tries to tell him that it is "not nice to growl", sod that, show the boss who is boss, don't plead with him, sometimes the wrong kind of love can be actually cruel to a dog. Oh she also feeds him effing chocolate, because if she has some and doesn't give it to him he growls at her.... She always offers to look after our pets if we want to go on vacation, but H and I agreed that we wouldn't trust her with looking after a goldfish....

I have never had any interaction with either pit bulls or American Staffordshire Terriers where the dog didn't show aggression or the owner when asked:

"Does your dog bite?"

hasn't answered: "Well, not if you move really slowly and ..."

I don't trust the fucking things. Whether some "expert" tells me they're safe or not, I've seen too much evidence to have formed my own opinion.

I do feel bad for them because it's humans that have bred them to be the terrors they are.

Mine is a Doberman/rott mix, when asked if he bites I say not without a good reason.

I have a whopping 5 lb Teddy Bear Pomeranian. The neighbors call him the Rottweiler Pom. He has a slight Napoleon complex. I rescued him from a breeder that was going to destroy him because he wasn't show quality. As tiny as he is, he protects me with all of his heart and then some. I wouldn't trade him for the world. I am now in the process of looking for a companion for him, a German Shepherd to join our little family.

Dachshounds are really popular in Germany, the were originally bred for getting badgers (Dachs) out of their dwellings, a dog who takes on a badger has to have some serious courage and aggression, don't know the actual statistics but the cute little sausage dog for a while caused the majority of bites in Germany....

This is by a group that is used to certify the aggressiveness of a dog for leases etc. Many rental property owners require dogs to be tested to meet insurance requirements, which I totally agree with.

Their webpage covers the criteria for testing.

There is a link I included to the National Canine Research Council with accurate stats on dog attacks, fatal and otherwise.

Owners of Pit Bulls in the US seem to have a striking similarity with owners of Staffies in the UK, both are smashing dogs when treated and trained right, wrong people (aka idiots who think an aggressive dog makes them more manly since they can't afford the big car as a penis extension) give breeds a bad name. Instead of putting dogs down, putting idiot owners down might be a much more viable solution to the problem. I have yet to meet a "bad" dog of any breed who has a responsible owner who's switched on, understands the needs of the breed and treats the dog accordingly. I'm all for breeding restrictions simply too many dogs end up in shelters and being destroyed, at the same time, the same thing should apply to humans, if you look at some people breeding, you can't help but wonder if the aim is to make the human race devolve... This really isn't against government aid, it's just against very irresponsible people, any child should get what it needs, seriously no issue with that, more of an issue with parents that are neglectant, but I don't want to sidetrack...

The best defense dog I ever had was a Great Pyrenees.
Something about a dog that can stick his head in your pickup window with all four paws on the ground that seemed to discourage unwelcome visitors.

I loved the UPS guys expression when he left a package at the gate. The Pyrenees stepped over the fence, picked up the package in his mouth, brought it to the front door and crossed his paws on it as he lay down. He didn't have to bite anyone, he could just sit on them.

But, dang, when we were out of town for a weekend we came back to find four coyote carcases on the front porch.
