I can tell you have never listen to any of his sermons. He has never asked for money, nor has there been a collection plate, during his sermons.

Yeah and the reason why he is a so called "preacher of the faith" is so he can get a tax exempt status. Make money and pay no taxes. Scam artist. They are nothing more than charlatan's preying on the weak of mind. Taking from the poor in order to maintain their wealthy lifestyles. Why not live like the people you take from do? Live on meager means like they do? Damn creeps!

He doesn't take one penny from his ministry or the church. The only income he receives is from his books, which he pays taxes.

servantforuse -> RE: Pastor Joel Osteen (3/7/2014 9:12:22 AM)

He has a net worth of 40 million dollars.

7 million people a week watch him and listen to his sermons. He has spiritually saved millions of people. He has the largest congregation in the USA. (40,000 people a week enter his church.) He was featured and praised on Oprah. Yet, in the forums whenever his name comes up people have nothing but bad things to say about him? Why?

There are two types of people in these forums. Happy and not so much. Happy people make negative judgments but never share them.

Hmmmmm ... that sounds kind of negative to me ..... but thanks for sharing it anyways [:D]

I see. You wish to start a back and forth the Mods just hate.

So, did you think so? It was not intended that way and I suspect it is not as your post characterized. Instead, my post answered the OP question while trying not to insult any individual person or make any judgement of an individual.

Owner59 -> RE: Pastor Joel Osteen (3/7/2014 9:22:01 AM)

If he`s not part of the well funded American Evangelical push for anti-gay laws in Africa....I don`t have a problem with him.

How folks pray in none of my business.I also think the way I pray is no one else`s business, especially politicians or ass-holes like mike huckabee.

Considering how many shit-kickers follow him,I think it was quite brave of him to speak about better gun laws after his son shot himself.

Spiritually saved millions of people from what?

He is paid no salary. His income is from the sale of his books.

BecomingV -> RE: Pastor Joel Osteen (3/7/2014 9:24:52 AM)

He's in a controversial business so he gets some flack. All leaders, all people of power and influence, can count on being chopped to public relations' bits. Even more so, if they are sexual beings. If they innovate, then even more stones are thrown at them.

Joel is a religious leader, the face of a movement, a Christian revolution. His ambition put him in that position. No man of such aspirations, and now, accomplishments, walks that path without knowing the risks. I'm sure he is psychologically insulated against "sticks and stones." And, if it creates a need for therapy, his business acumen has afforded him the best health care American dollars can buy.

And, remember, a LOT of Americans are atheists, agnostics and rationalists who don't appreciate tax breaks for those who profess to worship an imaginary friend in the sky.

So, yeah, Joel has detractors.

Sorry, I don't know. How does Osteen do that? Does he suggest people send him a gift to get finanical blessings? What about tithing, is that outside this discussion if we explore if Osteen asks for tithing as the mainline churches do?

Wrong.

He even gives the options of using your will, annuities or stocks. http://www.joelosteen.com/Pages/Give.aspx

I suggest "passing the plate during sermons" is very different. This website is private and you are under no pressure to give which means you give freely and under no public pressure as is the case if his church passed the plate "during his sermons". I do appreciate that some will not know the significant difference between a website private donation and "passing the plate" during sermons.

From terms of service at his web site.

WE ARE NOT LIABLE EVEN IF WE'VE BEEN NEGLIGENT OR IF OUR AUTHORIZED REPRESENTATIVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITIY OF SUCH DAMAGES OR BOTH.

EXCEPTION: CERTAIN STATE LAWS MAY NOT ALLOW US TO LIMIT OR EXCLUDE LIABILITY FOR THESE “INCIDENTAL” OR “CONSEQUENTIAL” DAMAGES. IF YOU LIVE IN ONE OF THOSE STATES, THE ABOVE LIMITATION WOULD NOT APPLY WHICH WOULD MEAN THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE THE RIGHT TO RECOVER THESE TYPES OF DAMAGES.

HOWEVER, IN ANY EVENT, OUR LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ALL LOSSES, DAMAGES, INJURIES, AND CLAIMS OF ANY AND EVERY KIND (WHETHER THE DAMAGES ARE CLAIMED UNDER THE TERMS OF A CONTRACT, OR CLAIMED TO BE CAUSED BY NEGLIGLENCE OR OTHER WRONGFUL CONDUCT, OR THEY’RE CLAIMED UNDER ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY) WILL NOT BE GREATER THAN THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO ACCESS OUR SITES.

This is not in keeping with the many bibles and research I have read and done. Where is accountability? I get that he/they must have some legal protections... but even from things that are their own fault? Oh... would not like to stand before his god on that one. Then what are the damages? Psychological maybe? Like someone mentally ill like his son? Okay... give him that one, but this doesn't line up in the big picture.

I do not see a huge outreach other than to promote books and events, featuring... you guessed it. There are few others that write books that are promoted and this is all about two people, making a splash with pretty words that tickle the ear drums of silly people, used in their belief system, to make a few people rich. With all that money... just think what good ol Joel could accomplish.

I tested many of the more public ministries... one passed. Dr. James Kennedy out of Florida. One... and that was out of all the major big names most know. I tested on... time they allowed a caller for assistance on their hot lines that actually turned more into.. we will pray for you and then ask for a donation, of course getting your address not to call and check on you, but to seek more funds for our pet projects. That often didn't actually do all they said they were doing. I tested on follow up. I tested on scripture based principles they taught and yet didn't seem to have in practice during these contacts. I tested on anything local that they were doing, advice given, how the person in need was handled and the time allowed for the call and a few other things. In general, they want you counseled, prayed with and making a donation in fifteen minutes.

The one that passed. Passed with flying colors... I spoke with his personal assistant, who sent books and then did a follow up call. No time limits and not one hint of wanting a donation.

It is by your fruit you shall be known and through that eye of the needle and those that called him Lord, Lord... many shall be shocked when he says... I never knew your name. Fruit isn't what many think it is... just because many follow... doesn't mean that they are wise to follow and they follow a good thing.

Smile pretty... talk modern ear tickling stuff and yes, you too may prosper. Work it baby. He is truly working hard for his money. (Thank you Donna Summers)

Oh, wow!
Another TV evangelist who lives in a mansion paid for by his "flock" - just like Jesus did.

You do know what a "flock" gets, right?
Fleeced.

You've hit the nail on the head with this; I just wish people wouldn't give their last to make others richer.

Prosperity Theology preaches that if you send Joel Osteen or Joyce Meyer money that God will have your back and YOU TOO can live a fabulous lifestyle, where riches and health and happiness will rain down on you in an unending golden shower.

Think of it as a Pyramid Scheme - only more skeevy because people like Joel Osteen are using the hope and the faith of their followers, people who tend to be poor or in dire trouble and know that they won't be held accountable unless God appears and sues them for Defamation of Character.

The entire practice is outside the world of mainstream Xtianity, even Evangelicals think that the idea of god running a 3 card monty scam is beyond the pale.
