Squeeze an ant between your fingers... they have distinct odors...some smell like coffee others like windex.  The best thing I have tried was taking Tide and sprinkling it around the outside perimeter of the house every week or so to keep them out or try using chalk in windows and outside doors.  The lime in the chalk is a deterent for them....just a few suggestions...I am certainly not an ant expert.

We have LOTS of ants here as well.  No matter how clean the house is..they still come in.  Some like the water..while others seek out something sweet.  As that person just stated some come for cleaning agents.  Nothing is off limits.
The thing we have found that works the best is made from Ortho its in a little can.  Called AntbGone.
You have to use several but usually within hours the ants walk in...get what they want and walk out never to be seen again.  Though one little can doesn't cover a huge area.  They come in packs of 3 for about 3 dollars a pack.
Good luck

Go to home depot they have a green plastic bottle with a pump and a nozzle  spray it around your house at the nase of the house and every crevice weekly, that should do the trick. They have entires sections of insecticides. Or my preffered method is keep spiders around the house  dont touch them and leave them alone they will eat every other insect in the house.

Those products that the ants take back to their nest seem to work well. Also full strength white vinegar is supposed to keep them away.

You need to find where they are coming in.  It doesn't help killing them where you see them as they will just keep coming back.

I get the big black ants...what does baking soda do for them?  Never heard of using that.

I used to live in a house on a lake. Every year about the same time....marching armies of ants. I used a product called TEER-O. It's a thick syrup and I used to put a drop on a small piece of plastic (I cut up disposable plastic plates into small squares) and set them around. I believe the product is made of Karo syrup and Borax. Anyway, the ants love it and get it all over themselves. When they go back to their nest, the other ants lick the syrup off of them. Within a few short days the entire colony is wiped out and no more ants in the house.

The black ants go back to the nest and tell the other ants about the baking soda. Then they all have a big laugh.

Ok first you get yourself a Vietnam-vintage flame thrower.  Then you find where the ants ... oh wait...This isn't the really bad ideas thread?  OOps.

Never mind.

Back when my Great Grandmother was still alive, you could always see little ants marching back and forth from the sugar bowl at her house. This happened more often when she made her home made raspberry cobler from scratch. One day, I took a wet rag and was ready to whip them off the counter. However, my Great Grandmother stoped me saying "Those little ants aren't hurting anybody. They just want a little sugar like the rest of us." Even though the cobler always had a little extra crunch, it tasted to good to ever care.

Are those little ants really hurting you or your home?

on my last bender, me and my friends woke up being eaten alive by the ants we get out here, red bodies, black abdomens, I still have the marks and shit.

You want to get rid of ants, then you have to kill the queen, Estring mentioned about that, Raid and other people have the bait traps that give out stuff that the ants take back to the queen and take out the entire colony from the inside out.

Just recently tried that stuff.  Doesn't work at all.  I think it depends upon the kind of ants you have and the area of the country.
The vinegar solution...well what do you do when you have ants who like drinking vinegar?
Also curious now, what is a "hotel thingy?"
The stuff you spray on the outside of the house around the foundation and the windows and doors works well too.  Although you have to spray before ant season.  We missed that frame of time this year because we were moving.  So, now we have to battle them from inside.
