.....just another reason for the Irish to get drunk or do they even need one ? Why not ?

The Irish are a lot hey ? Started leaving in the early 1600's when they saw even the elite had to escape the British. Then en mass during the great British inspired right wing 'free market' [sic] famine...stealing of Irish food.

Once in the US, some even dropped the O from their name to escape prejudice. Then attributed the real reason by both the British and the US Confederacy...the reason for victory in both of those wars.

'Irish need not apply'...'Irish and dogs keep off the grass.' (some say resulted in Tammany Hall) Dirty, lazy, drunken sloth yet among the most passionately patriotic Americans.

The Irish are truly a bit of a paradox, an enigma and yet...here we are on yet another St. Patty's Day. (drinking Mexican beer no less)

Enjoy !!

just another day to get pissed as far as I have ever seen:)

found this in a local p aper this morning
BOSTON - Irish brewer Guinness said on Sunday that it would not participate in New York City's St. Patrick's Day parade this year because gay and lesbian groups had been excluded, costing organizers a key sponsor of the annual event.

The move came on the same day that Boston's Irish-American mayor skipped that city's St. Patrick's Day parade after failing to hammer out a deal with organizers to allow a group of gay and lesbian activists to march openly.

"Guinness has a strong history of supporting diversity and being an advocate for equality for all. We were hopeful that the policy of exclusion would be reversed for this year's parade," the brewer said in a written statement issued by a spokesman for its parent company, Diageo.

"As this has not come to pass, Guinness has withdrawn its participation. We will continue to work with community leaders to ensure that future parades have an inclusionary policy," Guinness said.

Last week New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said he would not march in the parade because gay and lesbian activists had been again precluded from taking part.

The loss of Guinness, one of the world's top beer brands originating in Dublin, Ireland, appeared to ratchet up the pressure on organizers even further.

On Friday, two other major beer companies, Sam Adams brewer Boston Beer Co and Heineken dropped their sponsorship of parades in Boston and New York, respectively, over the issue.

Representatives for the New York board of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, which has run the parade for more than 150 years, could not be reached for comment on Sunday afternoon.

Earlier in the day Boston Mayor Marty Walsh skipped his city's parade when he couldn't negotiate a deal with organizers, the conservative Allied War Veteran's Council, to allow members of MassEquality, one of Massachusetts' largest gay activist groups, to join.

INCREASING CRITICISM

"So much of our Irish history has been shaped by the fight against oppression," Walsh, the city's first Irish-American mayor in 20 years, said in a statement.

"As mayor of the city of Boston, I have to do my best to ensure that all Bostonians are free to participate fully in the civic life of our city. Unfortunately, this year, the parties were not able to come to an understanding that would have made that possible."

Despite Walsh's boycott, other prominent Democratic Boston politicians, including Representative Stephen Lynch, marched in the parade, which drew tens of thousands of spectators, some of whom expressed disappointment at MassEquality's exclusion.

"It's supposed to be a time when everyone can come together," said university student Jeyashri Sridhar, 18. "It's sad that people can't participate because of who they are."

Organizers of St. Patrick's Day parades in New York and Boston, among the most liberal-leaning cities in the United States, have come under increasing criticism in recent years for banning openly gay marchers.

Parade organizers argue that to do so would conflict with their Roman Catholic heritage. The Catholic church contends that homosexual activity is immoral.

While MassEquality did not participate, the parade was not without gay marchers.

South Boston resident Randy Foster, along with his husband Steve Martin, organized a diversity-themed float that sported rainbow flags but no direct gay rights messages. Foster said the flags represented the proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in Irish lore, though he acknowledged the gay-rights movement uses a rainbow flag.

"If there's a dual message to it, we're OK with it and so are the parade organizers," said Foster, 48. "We made the point of not making it a gay float. If we're going to have a message of inclusion, it shouldn't be for one group."

Massachusetts in 2003 became the first U.S. state to legalize gay marriage. Attitudes on gay marriage have changed markedly across the nation since then, with 17 states and the District of Columbia now allowing same-sex couples to wed.

I dont have enough irish ancestry to make a big deal out of St. Paddy's day.

In fact I do not celebrate this day out of protest. There is no big celebration for Saint David, and thus, the saint Paddy celebration are a prejudicial act against a more divine people.

I don't get the ban on openly gay marchers - unless of course, how they are marching isn't family friendly - buttless chaps and so on.

As for St Patricks day - I grew up in New Zealand, and there was no such celebration there. And corned beef was a everyday meal there in my family.
I understand (I think) the American Irish wanting to celebrate their roots in centurys past, since they were discriminated against and looked down upon - but now, as is the want, I think there is a commercialization of the day that completely negates the original intent.
Now its a day for merchants to sell green things, have a booze-up, and sell beer and corned beef (which I understand isn't an Irish dish at all). There is very little in the day that truly celebrated Irish ancestry.

I feel the same way about Valentines day, Christmas and Mothers day.

Michael Patrick Sean Francis _ _ _ _ _ _ _ approves of this holiday; mainly because I was specifically given my middle name to "emulate" this saint.

I don't do the drinking and all of that crap. In fact, my lady (a Pole/Hunky mix) asked me where we were going to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and my response was: "Nowhere. It's freakin' 'Amateur night'. We'll be home.

Then you need to START ONE!!! And I know if anyone can start an obscure holiday that would give people another reason to drink and celebrate, YOU of all people could do it Jif!! Go for it!

Hell....it took a few guys (with the inspiration of Dave Barry) less than 10 years to create International Talk Like a Pirate Day! I know you could create any holiday you wanted....go for it!

My parents saddled me with 'Patrick' for the same reason. And I won't be getting befuddled myself, as I regard the way it's celebrated as a mild insult to my heritage. I may have a quiet beer and shot later, but I'll be too busy today to bother with the nonsense that goes on. Amateur Night indeed.

I don't know that I get insulted. I think it gives wind to the old saw that "There's two kinds of people in this world; those that are Irish and those that wish they were"

Personally, I also don't get insulted because I think it's kind of "silly". I think we need either thicker skin or better senses of humor. One of me favorite jokes is:

Two Irishmen walk out of a bar ...

Wha? It could happen!

Erin Go Bragh!!!

Well....my paternal grandmother was born in County Mayo Ireland and came to the US as a child....I'm at least a good 25% Irish...and I like it! My dad is proud of his Irish heritage and I grew up listening to a LOT of Irish folk music and traditional songs

Whiskey, you're the devil, you're leadin' me astray

I'm a rambler. I'm a gambler.
I'm a long way from home
an' if ye don't like me,
well, leave me alone.

I'll eat when I'm hungry.
I'll drink when I'm dry
an' if whiskey don' kill me,
I'll live 'til I die.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at yer back.
May the sun shine warm upon yer face
and the rains fall soft upon yer fields
An' until we meet again,
May God keep ye in the palm of his hand.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

May ye be in heaven, a half an hour before the devil knows yer dead!

An Irish friend of mine used to grumble on Paddy's day "Feck, all the plastic Paddies are coming out again to get plastered!"

I've spent a few years in Dublin as a student, the locals had the same attitude towards St. Patrick's day as the locals in Munich have when it comes to the Octoberfest... You never hear people grumbling "Bloody tourists being drunk and puking everywhere" as much as then...

That's funny, and kind of what I figured.

I don't make a big deal about the day, myself.
As far back as I've traced, I have no Irish in me so absolutely no reason to celebrate or whatever the purpose for the holiday is.
Life itself is enough reason to drink.

I'm thinking time machine for some reason. Failing that, I've penciled in March 14 2015.
