I believe that the people should be allowed to choose, although I would also say that it's not a decision to be taken lightly, and perhaps it shouldn't be put on the fast track in this way. The Crimea isn't going anywhere. Russia isn't going anywhere. They have time to sit down and discuss the situation. They've already had over 20 years to work this out. Why all the sense of urgency to get this done now?
Historically, the situation is complicated and messy. I don't think there's any right answer which will satisfy all parties. That's why many similar situations around the world tend to go mostly "unresolved," since the international community tends to favor the status quo, while giving some attention to human rights issues for those living in disputed or occupied territories (although probably not enough).
