Greetings and Salutations,

I am currently engaged in a research project for college and I have chosen the thesis: Despite propaganda as well as the APA's labeling of BDSM as a psychological disorder there is increasing evidence to suggest that not only is this untrue, but people in the BDSM lifestyle often test in better psychological and emotional health. My question for the Collarme community is if you know of any experts in the field I could email and get some feedback from.

Col. Malcolm S.L. McLellan (Ret) "IronBear" is the man you want to speak to. Look for him on Fetlife.

Actually, you've picked the wrong thesis, BDSM is not labelled as a psychological disorder anymore to the best of my knowledge....

Your thesis topic has outdated information:

it is often labeled under paraphilia. It is a gross injustice that I promise you is still part of college psychology.

though if indeed that is the case there are several often used resources that place sadism and masochism in the category of paraphilia. And if it is true, it just means my thesis needs to omit the part about the apa's classification and focus on the psychological and emotional benefits if any.

I have links, even a couple of those you posted. the problem is I am only allowed so many web sources. I have to rely upon some other sources such as published work (ebooks will work) as well as personal conversations of those in the life and even personal experience. I was just trying to see if anyone could point to some existing research to reference as far as published work went or another type of source. Thank you for the links though I may not have that pdf.

Since DSM-V only came out last June, the text books probably haven't had a chance to catch up yet.

The following are some statements about the various paraphilias in the DSM-5. Although highly clinical in language, they show the APA’s intent to not demand treatment for healthy consenting adult sexual expression:

“A paraphilia is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for having a paraphilic disorder, and a paraphilia by itself does not necessarily justify or require clinical intervention.” p. 686

“In contrast, if they declare no distress, exemplified by anxiety, obsessions, guilt or shame, about these paraphilic impulses, and are not hampered by them in pursuing other personal goals, they could be ascertained as having masochistic sexual interest but should not be diagnosed with a sexual masochism disorder.” p. 694

“Many individuals who self-identify as fetishist practitioners do not necessarily report clinical impairment in association with their fetish-associated behaviors. Such individuals could be considered as having a fetish but not fetishistic disorder.” p. 701

“Clinical assessment of distress or impairment, like clinical assessment of transvestic sexual arousal, is usually dependent on the individual’s self-report.” p. 703

https://ncsfreedom.org/press/blog/item/the-dsm-5-says-kink-is-ok.html

It took me less than a minute to get a confirmation on the update.

So still, shame on you for choosing a thesis topic that promotes inaccurate information.

Then why not get a copy of the most recent DSM (V) and if you want to compare it with previous versions, that will give you written material to work off.

Well, all those "web resources" usually have names attached to them, you could simply email the people who have them on their blogs, some of what you call web resources are published works, etc. Again, somebody who with a PhD might be talking to you, which would make your thesis better researched than asking somebody random...

The point of a research paper is to gain that information. As it has not been published in the texts that I had previously engaged in, unless it popped up on a search I could not have noticed. Not to mention ignorance is not a shame if one takes every measure to correct it. I came to the community that I knew would know the most about the topic. And as I used that resource I now know that I must revise the focus.

I am aware that I can used a published work on the web, and I have been using PDFs as well. As this is day one I am still in the research phase. I am happy for the help and I had thought about the emails as well. Thank you for the assistance.

But before one chooses a topic, one should scope it out first.
It took me less than a minute.
Since you didn't know what you were looking for, it may have taken you 10, possibly 15.
I am not saying shame on you for your ignorance.
I am saying shame on you for your apparent lack of due diligence.

No ma'am, I did not Cmail you. I have actually never seen you before in your life. I encourage a moderator to look at my outbox and notice this. To angelikaj as I said, this is the day that I have started the project and as I have turned nothing in my paper is unaffected by the new knowledge. Again I do thank you for your help and I will most certainly remember that the DSM has changed.

It is a tired topic for research, imo.  Every year about this time someone comes up with the brilliant idea to write a thesis on BDSM.  If you still want to write on a topic that has been done to death, and has already been eliminated from the DSM-V, google is your friend.  Personal experience is not sufficient evidence, neither is anecdotal.
