Another one that makes my brain hurt is the use of ellipses as sentence separators, often with a mere two (..) dots instead of three.

"She's coming over to my house..then we're going to the park from there..after that, we'll go to dinner..then to the movies."

Can I be pedantic (as I am wont to do, often)?

I believe a proper ellipsis has a space, three dots, and another space unless it just ends a sentence. i.e.;

quote:

She's coming over to my house ... something I am not keen on ... (the speaker just ends the sentence there; having nothing more to say on the subject)

I'm not sure in your example if a full stop wouldn't be more appropriate. I could be wrong but "Then" certainly can be used to start a sentence.

What about people sending emails to others with no spaces between the end of sentence the period and the next sentence....what is up with that? Usually it is a scammer sending the email but not always.

Re: above: I love DarkSteve's take on the no periods between sentences thing. He responds (paraphrasing here): "Are you sure you're not pregnant, because you sure have missed a few periods!"

Did Darksteven even make a quote on this thread?

When I answer that I am American but I do okay in French, I get blasted with French text speak, which is VERY difficult to understand. It has made me more aware of avoiding as many contractions (including possessives) as I can.

<shudders> Text speak in English makes my head ache. Text speak in languages foreign to me would make me consider suicide! [&:]

I always mess words up because of my dyslexia. Sometimes (sometimes) I proof read and I think "my gosh, what on earth?!?!!" However currently I'm inebriated and horny and it's Saturday night. I finished a shallow bottle of Bordeaux from Southern France.
I hope LadyP and MisterP are enjoying the vantages of having an anniversary on a Saturday, just all sorts of mischief to get into, LOL!

I'm with you, GM, except dang, I don't drink! I just posted on the 'Admit' thread that if Huck were here right now I'd have something more...uhhh...physical, to do!

Meh, time to practice. Carry on, y'all! Vent your favorite language faux pas here!

GoddessManko -> RE: Apostrophe S: 's for plural? (3/22/2014 9:17:52 PM)

N'ils parles rien le francais ici malheureusement, I must confess, LOL.

I find it difficult to find a proper way to word: "I'm sorry. I learned French from 1974 until 1987 and stopped using it on a daily basis in 1991, long before the popularity of the internet and cell phones. Could you speak classical French for me, please?"

It would work if it was "The Jones' house is the best on the street", meaning it referred to more than a singular subject. :)

Wouldn't that be "the Joneses' house"?

GoddessManko -> RE: Apostrophe S: 's for plural? (3/22/2014 9:21:19 PM)

Nah dcnovice, weirdly it would be pronounced that way though. But the major issue here is that my bed feels a bit big and wide tonight. :(

Yes, of course a few full stops would be appropriate, but I'm typing it as I see it elsewhere. Hmmm, don't know about the space between ellipses. I've always seen it written as no space between dots. More research is needed.

Also, in the above context, I believe the word you want is 'w o n t'.

Ahhhh! Je regret. Vous avez raison!

MistressDarkArt -> RE: Apostrophe S: 's for plural? (3/22/2014 9:34:05 PM)

^^^^^Oh F*CK!!!! Don't make me have to drop that into Google Translate!

(I think you said something about being regretfully right, right?) Brain cells are screaming OWWWWIEEEEEE!!! (As opposed to 'oui' [8D])

MistressDarkArt -> RE: Apostrophe S: 's for plural? (3/22/2014 9:35:54 PM)

Also, DaddySatyr, as an aside I must say how much I enjoy your avatar. I've saved it to use elsewhere for other occasions!

DaddySatyr -> RE: Apostrophe S: 's for plural? (3/22/2014 9:36:18 PM)

Well ...

You were close. "Je regret" is "I'm sorry" (I regret) and "Vous avez raison" is: "You have reason" (You're right)

I have the bigger version. If you want it, it's in my photos, on the other side (I think).

ETA: Yes. It's the sixth one.

No, but I remember it from last year or the year before. Amazing, since I can't remember what I ate for lunch yesterday. [&:]

Deleted as MDA already covered the pedantic failure of want/wont.
