Status: offline 		Even before the recent confession by "Rick" that he (supposedly) created a slew of sock puppets, I have spent some time thinking about this type of sock. Being thought of as one myself by a few people probably increased my interest <grin>.

I'm only talking about Rick's type of sock puppetry here - creating profiles to post questions and engage discussion based on elaborately crafted (and made up) situations.

Many of his creations DID spur a lot of discussion, and the responses offered were, in many cases, heartfelt and informative.

Years ago I got interested in the Seth books by Jan Roberts. This is a lady who claimed to channel and speak through an alien entity. This entity offered an extensive and detailed view on the nature of physical reality. Did I believe she channeled an alien? It didn't matter to me if she did or not, because I found the ideas fascinating and in many cases, valid for me.

I feel the same way about Rick's type of sock puppetry. Yes, it's inherently wrong to portray yourself as something you're not, but this IS the internet after all. It happens. A lot. My point is that I don't feel the discussion generated by a post is invalidated because the OP turns out to be a sock. I don't think people who responded as if it were true are lessened in any way when/if the truth comes out.

This is just my opinion, and I'm new - I wasn't around for the whole <not about to type the name> situation which sounds like it hurt a lot of folks in the end. I certainly wouldn't encourage or condone anyone who creates this type of sock. I'm just saying that the thoughts and ideas in response to such a sock can be valuable on their own.

The socks can laugh at everyone and think it's all a hilarious game, but I think those who have truly benefited from replying to or following the socks' discussions have the last laugh.

I completely disagree. If you go back and look at the threads that this person started, they collapsed into a quagmire of one part ridiculous, one part mean and nastiness. Nothing of substance can survive in that. What it DID do was put everyone's radar on high alert. What THAT did was create a breeding ground for mistrust, which, IMO, left fertile ground for a real newbie to get blasted. And that EXACTLY what happened. This led to an all out war in how "we" treat new people.

And the rest is the forums as they stand on this day. Non existent quality threads. Lots of P&R. Good posters gone or scarce because they are just..sick of it.

So. In no way, shape or form do I think that it is "okay"

The thread quality has plummeted here, at least as much the fault of the socks as of the recent drama. And socks nearly destroyed the forums a couple of years ago, and they never quite bounced back from Arpig's damage.
I don't bother posting much anymore here because so very many threads and posts seem like sock posts. I won't waste my time in discussion with people who don't have the guts to be their identifiable selves and to own their post content. Gutless and immature people have nothing of interest to say as far as I have seen yet.

I have noticed many new nics in the last 2 weeks. I have no idea if they are who they say. And frankly, right now, I really don't care enough to get to know them and find out. I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop. I HOPE it doesn't.

I DO know that nothing of substance or real fun is happening here at the moment. I keep peeking in, hoping to see new life (it IS Spring, after all). But all I see and read is....a lot of crap.

Some people are nasty whether the OP is a sock or not, just as some discussions degenerate into "war" because IMO a lot of strong-minded, expressive people post here (which I like).

As a lurker, I read these forums from a dispassionate spot in the rafters. I read back a year or more on many of them. Even during the melt-down I found good replies from people with good intentions, just as I do now. I don't think they should be lost in the shuffle.

I agree with you that there is a current breeding ground for mistrust, which is sad. But I think it's temporary and part of the normal flux of many Internet forums over the years. Some sites bounce back; some don't. I hope this one will continue.

And while I understand the anger over what happened, and especially the privacy concerns, it's my opinion that the best way to improve the culture here is to continue to post "good stuff" to offset the "bad stuff". And throw in some humor whenever possible, so it's a fun place as well as an informative one.

Status: offline 		Those one or two good replies you speak of get lost in a sea of utter excrement when a sock or socks start threads. It is STILL my opinion that sock puppetry is detrimental. In no way, shape or form does a few well thought out comments weigh in equal to the damage that has occurred in the past, and is occurring now.

I'm not angry. Not at all. Getting angry at a situation I cannot control, and did nothing to contribute to, would be a waste. I'm a bit sad, but not overly so. And I've seen not one shred of "good stuff" in weeks. I am loathe to begin a thread with depth or meaning, because there is every chance that it will be overrun with posts from exactly what we are discussing here.

ETA. Beginning a new thread in this environment would be a waste of time. It is still an environment of mistrust, from both the participants, and the new administration. This will settle, I'm sure. But it certainly hasn't done so yet.

Sorry all, but Destructo the blind-climbing maniac kitten is awake now. He just caught his claw in the cheap pop up laundry hamper I bought at the dollar store for him. He ran all puffed-up and terrified across the room, dragging it behind him. ROFLMAO

He's still attacking it, so no permanent mental or emotional damage has occurred from the episode. And no way I'll be able to string together any coherent thoughts until he goes to sleep again.

What I do not understand is the people that dumped CC, leading the masses to their new perfect world where everyone plays Last One to Post and not a bad word can be said about anything comes here to ridicule this site. Don't dump your garbage here and go back and play miss nice nice somewhere else. I just find this in very poor taste. We don't come to your site and dump all over it because we would be deleted. Oh how terrible!! Pfft.

I lost some posts here - one said that I had put the picture in my profile photos. The others were absolutely brilliant replies that I wrote while he was taking his after-lunch nap.

I'm still mucking about in the test forum, trying to figure out how to imbed photos. I keep getting an x, using the same jpeg file I uploaded successfully to my profile. I think it's a conspiracy against me by the laundry hamper company 'cause I called their product cheap and used it as a cat toy.
