You're welcome, Dtesmoac. Hmm, comfort does make a huge difference, I understand; we stayed with my brother after the hurricane down here for a few weeks and never felt "at home"....as much as I appreciate them and what they did, I couldn't get out of there fast enough [:)].

The British / English communication is less straight forward than many other societies, there is a tendency to understate and over criticise everything. Winding up and "humour" is more pervasive than in many other cultures. Some foreign colleagues find this very difficult when they work with Brits as they do not know when things are serious or joking......an example........if you meet a Brit and he says......I know a bit about History..........its quite likley that he is  a professor of History at Cambridge University......
Irony is used by the British far more than in most other societies. The term "not bad" can be used to mean "absolutely brilliant" "ok" and or"totally shit". I can almost guarantee that if for the 20th time you put a thread up critisising the British it would be the Brits that would be the rudest...............but only the Brits would understand which rude statements were rude and which were our typical. smug, know it all compliments.......

ref ur precious..............actually I'm really cheap.............I spent today in a "pub" in the US in my England shirt surrounded by Americans in with a few French and Italian's watching the final on a big screen.........I think it was the most civilised atmosphere I've watched a match in for years. ........... but one Yank's statement of whens the next break was precious .............

I think you would find the exchange rate would have made it a little expensive of late. The US dollar is now only worth 78 euro cents compared to being comparable to the Euro not too long ago. That means in the centre of Amsterdam you will probably pay between$2.00 and $2.50 for a beer. Cigarette tabacco costs $6.15 for a 50 gram pouch, one ounce being about 28 grams. If you don't mind a modest hotel out of the centre but with easy access with public transport, it's not so expensive. I recently had a friend stay with me from England and she kept moaning about the prices though but conceded it was a lot cheaper than London. When I go to see my daughter in Rotterdam, I notice the prices are lower there. Well for things I like such as beer.

That isn't just in the context of international communication.
A Lancastrian and a Yorshireman where in a bar tearing strips off one another verbaly. A Londoner who was also there interjected saying "I never knew your two countys hated each other quite so much".

The other two turned and as one replied "Not as much as we hate the fucking SOUTHENERNERS!"

Then all three burst out laughing and got the next round in. I'm willing to bet that if someone outside the UK had been there too, they would have been quite confused [:D]

I am not BRITISH and I am offended to be mistaken as English, despite currently living in England.... I am a SCOT and proud of it. Bloody sassanachs [;)]

Ravenmuse - I saw something I did not believe
-whilst QUEING !!!  to get into a pub in the USA at 0830 to see the England Portugal match there were three blokes behind me in different versions of the England football shirt. The shirts were all owned by an American but one of the people wearing the shirts was full blown living in Scotland Scottish - accent, righter than though, scotts.....apparntly his mate had thought it would be risky to go to the pub not in correct colours. Naturally I restrained from ribbing him while we were queing ............NOT.......  but I was very releived I didn't meet him on the way out after the match.......what comes arnd goes around...............  :)

this is absolute gospel truth....

Here is what I have to say about the United Kingdom, and I'm going to go all serious on you.

You probably have a lot of problems in the UK, but as an American it is not my place to point them out to the very people that live with them every day. I wouldn't be telling you anything that you don't already know, so I see no need to rub your nose in it. My country has problems too. If my country ever becomes perfect, I still won't rub your nose in it, but may offer you a hand in letting you know what miracle brought about perfection.
 
I'm sure your country has also made some very good and very bad decisions in the past, and done things both helpful and harmful to mankind. As an American, I don't need to list them, as you undoubtedly know exactly what they are. I would only like to thank you for the positive contributions, with the understanding that my country makes mistakes also. They seem to be unavoidable. I wish it wasn't that way, but it seems to be. If we ever figure out how to avoid making mistakes, I still won't dwell on yours, but may let you in on the secret ... being grateful for all the good you have done.
 
We have some social differences ... some that work better for you, and some that work better for us. As an American, I don't need to dwell on yours, as they were probably chosen out of necessity, and I respect you for making the decisions that are right for you.

Please don't get all serious...we positively enjoy moaning.....its a national pastime, and sometimes very difficult to come up with new things to moan about down the pub, so the idea of a few hundred Americans helping us out by pointing out things we haven't thought would be wonderful.  Seems to me you've found the perfect response needed to reallyu upset us... be overly serious.

Laughing...now there's something I agree with.  I'm amused when they advertise "full en suite" as a selling point--as though we're only expecting half en suite or you-have-to-piss-down-the-hall suite.

I want to complain that them dam Brits caused us Americans to have this outrageous tax thing going when they started taxing tea .. I know I was there and threw a few boxes over boardI have eatin at a wimpys . good gawd more grease came off that burger then a frying vat at burger king .... AND .... I want to make reservations with the evil bunnie for a few nights stay . but I want a master suite with it's own bathroom and no televised soccer<football> games ...... AND
