Well, i just hope my family will accept me as a girl.

Why not include your mother. Ask her what your name would have been has you been born with a female body?
She may feel included that way.
If you continue to include her in your process, she may grow with you.

She and my brother have told me in past conversations that they think transgenderism isnt real and they think its wrong.

Why not a mix, like callista?

Wow, it always creeps me out...in a good way...when people read my mind. I was just scrolling down to post that, lol.

Just my two cents, I love the word Calypso, but as a name it does sound kind of cheesy and theatrical to me. But that's just my opinion, since you asked. If you love it, go with it! :)

Maybe make it your middle name?

On the other hand, Calypso was the name of Jacques Cousteau's boat, and I was a huge fan of his :)

FR

Another little thing re 'Willow':

When I was at school and taking judo lessons, the instructor used a story by some ancient Japanese master. Basically, it boiled down to the fact that against a strong wind, an oak tree cracks but a willow just bends. (And there's a lot of bending in judo to turn an opponent's force into a throw, natch.) Yin strength versus yang strength. Feminine willow versus masculine oak. Roughly speaking.

Keep your ground, and lead by example. Continue to invite her in, regardless of her acceptance, as though she's a child who doesn't understand. Just because she has your life wrong doesn't mean you can't accept her disbelief in what you need. Remind her that you'll always be the same person you ever were inside. Good luck....

You are worried about your mother accepting that you want to see a counselor.
I really think you are putting the cart quite a bit before the horse.
While I can understand the appeal of finding comfort in the perfect name, you have some hard work ahead of you.

Colbaltrose, As someone who was where you were a few years ago now I will say it sucks. My parents grew with time and became more accepting I'm not sure if yours will do the same but I can only hope they will. As for the name I think you need to take yourself out of the picture on choosing it. When I was going for mine I asked my mother and father their ideas. Both of them were terrible and I decided not to go with them because the names were god awful, at the end of the day this isn't really an issue just ask their opinions since it should matter more than ours. Finally how I came to a decision on my name was to ask my then girlfriend what I should be called. Me and her sat up all night looking at names and while she had final say I was giving a certain amount of veto power so I could stop it ending with something that I would of absolutely hated. How come up with your name is up to you however I implore you to ask those who are close to you so that it means more than if someone on the internet helps you choose.

Well, I decided on a name, and its Clarissa Willow. It just sounds right to me. It goes well, and it lets me keep my initials. Also if it turns out my mom doesnt accept me and disowns me....well....though i be really sad, another part of me is basically "dont need that negativity in my life. Of course I will welcome her back in my life whenever she chooses to come back into it.

Naming yourself is one of the things you can do for yourself, doesn't cost any money, and more importantly, it is a way to take charge of yourself, even in a small way:).

As far as parental acceptance, I wish I could say it is going to be okay, that everyone will accept you, but the first rule you learn in transition is that that simply isn't true. It depends on the people around you, but don't be surprised if someone who claims they are ultra liberal and tolerant freaks out, while someone you thought would be an asshole turns out to be supportive. Very religious people you thought would freak may at the least try to accept you, even if they don't understand, while the person who reads Mother Jones News and such turns a cold shoulder. Hopefully parental love will come through, even if they don't understand it, but it could be rough (and yes, there is always hope. There was one young kid in the support group, kid was from Staten Island, kind of Jersey shorish background, her mom was this woman from the neighborhood type I only knew too well, she actually came to the groups, and went from being not understanding and negative to becoming supportive (kid was like 19,20).....went from where the mom came with the kid dressed as a boy, to where the kid came proudly all dressed up (looked stunning, the little bitch, was I ever jealous *lol*), the mom had taken her shopping, to get her first mani/pedi, getting her ears pierced, you name it, was kind of cute..she still had reservations, but also kind of saw what other people were saying, how sane many of us seemed to be (if she only knew! *smile*), and it seemed to help, so you never know. It is why this is a process, you kind of build your own world, then slowly let people into it, keeping those who support you close and keeping the rest where they can't hurt you.

Seems like a very, very good strategy.

As always from nj - a very good post.

But isn't that just... umm... plain old 'common sense'?? [sm=dunno.gif]
I'm amazed at just how many people seem to be devoid of it. [sm=gaah.gif]

PyrotheClown -> RE: Female Name Ideas (4/29/2014 5:12:31 AM)

how bout "Hungry"

hear me out on this one
you can always answer "are you hungry?" with "why yes, have we met?"
can introduce yer self "nice to meet you,I'm Hungry"
confuse people who are asking about you"who's hungry?"
