keetnerd -> Research Survey (5/7/2014 10:12:56 AM)

Hey, all!

I'm doing some undergraduate research on kink, and I thought this might be a good place to start getting some responses. (If this is an inappropriate place to post this, I'll remove it posthaste.)

What I'm hoping for with this survey is to generate more academic attention to the subject, since the field is comparatively lacking on it at the moment. More information anywhere would help a lot of things in lots of ways!

If you'd like to take the survey or help to spread the link around, that would be super awesome.

Thanks, everyone!

Here's the link:

There was a research survey thingy not so long ago on these boards.

And FYI, there's just shedloads of info out there on the interwebz. Try Google - that usually works. [:D]

keetnerd -> RE: Research Survey (5/7/2014 10:19:56 AM)

Aaaah, another one? I'll try and dig it up, I'd like to see it! Thanks!

Ahaha, there really is a lot out there; I based most of the content of this on what I could find through Google searches, in the end, since the databases were so comparatively dry on it. [:)]

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: Research Survey (5/7/2014 10:27:38 AM)

Why do you need a database when the interwebz comes back with over 62 million entries??? [8|]

keetnerd -> RE: Research Survey (5/7/2014 10:40:28 AM)

Haha, true enough! Goes to show that information is information when you're left to base a study outside of academic sources, ahaha.

DesFIP -> RE: Research Survey (5/7/2014 4:00:19 PM)

I started taking it but since you assume that illegal activity is par for the course, I stopped.

Asking about doing things without consent? Sex offender type stuff? Shame on you.

Try reading Dr Gloria Brame's books.

submissionholly -> RE: Research Survey (5/7/2014 4:07:43 PM)

yeah there's not a huge amount of academic work out there. Weirdly designed survey though, can only choose 20 options?

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: Research Survey (5/8/2014 10:45:59 AM)

I also started taking it and then stopped. I had some concerns over the questions. 'Pick your top 20' seems like an odd way to go about it - I'm wondering what sort of information you're hoping to find? It seems that some of your categories might include others. Some were extremely specific and others way too vague. I noticed you had 'rape' and also questions about non-consensual contact with strangers. Now rape role play might be something I would tick, but I couldn't check 'rape' because I was worried that you were talking about actual rape the crime.

Can you explain what you're hoping to prove or question with this research? Because I can't see what usable data could come out of a list of kinks. Are you just looking for an idea of what's most popular? Are you hoping to demonstrate some correlation between gender identity and certain kinks? Are you trying to see how many people will admit to being into illegal acts?

What's your hypothesis?

DominantWoman65 -> RE: Research Survey (5/8/2014 11:08:55 AM)

I'm wondering who does u grad research in May?

ForgetToRemember -> RE: Research Survey (5/8/2014 3:42:55 PM)

Grad research can be ongoing (and usually is). For example, if he is writing a dissertation, that can last years in some cases. Anyways, I also believe there should be more academic interest in kink, so long as it is done in the proper scientific way (aka no researcher bias, such as loaded questions or priming or pigeonholing...etc). In particular, I would be interested to see if Sadism & Masochism has any biological foundation, as many who identify as one or both say that they have been that way as long as they can remember (just my small sample size to go on).

DominantWoman65 -> RE: Research Survey (5/8/2014 5:09:26 PM)

He specified under grad research which would not begin in May.

tsatske -> RE: Research Survey (5/8/2014 5:34:46 PM)

Athena, it gets odder than that. I didn't have a problem with being asked to pick a few kinks from a list, although the list was odd in itself. But somehow I thought, from something it said at the bottom that your choices would be used to pick the questions they wanted to ask you. Although I should have known better, that would take quite a bit of coding, I guess. But the list of kinks was the only question. So they should aggregate my identity information - age, gender, etc - to a short list of my kinks, and that will tell him what?

BecomingV -> RE: Research Survey (5/9/2014 10:36:13 AM)

Something here feels... not straight-forward.

No one has to tell a college student about google and academia does NOT accept information from any and all sources. The guidelines are strict, so this feels more like a personal hobby.

piopio1949 -> RE: Research Survey (5/9/2014 10:41:00 AM)

Quite frankly, I think that many people in here are being a bit paranoid. It looks a bit like the OP is not the most versed person in kink so you would have to understand it if the questions are not made in the most appropriate or comprehensive way; but I also think that he/she would appreciate any feedback we could give him/her on this. Google is obviously not an option when one wants to perform a statistical study based on people's data. All things considered, the survey looks perfectly legit to me.

BecomingV -> RE: Research Survey (5/9/2014 11:36:10 AM)

Nope. It's about experience on the boards here and recognizing forthrightness. Sometimes, it takes a few pages of the thread before the OP will fess up about their real situation/project, etc... This one doesn't ring true.

Keep in mind that there are many educated, intelligent and experienced posters here. Many are academics. Lots of us know about credible sources for academia and research and are familiar with data collection. This doesn't fit.

Start with the first step in all data collection - has the researcher mastered the language being used by those whom respond?

No, this researcher didn't even get a very, very basic concept down - CONSENT. Rape is not rape play.

There is nothing to respect in what is being presented here as "research." College level research, at that! The so-called researcher has shown the participants great disrespect. I'm not buying!

bullshit

Inghammar -> RE: Research Survey (5/9/2014 2:25:42 PM)

Does the general public know what 'cisgender' means?

tsatske -> RE: Research Survey (5/9/2014 4:44:10 PM)

I personally had to look it up. Apparently it's shorthand for 'happily identifying as the gender you were born.' I noticed that while he asked about gender, he didn't ask about sexual preference or preferred role.

keetnerd, perhaps spend a lot of time reading the plethora of knowledge gathered on this ^^^ thread.

A proper researcher gains basic competence BEFORE asking others for their time and attention.

As is, this looks like, "I can't be bothered to educate myself about even the most basic of factors in this topic, but I want you to stop what you are doing, trust me enough to click on an off-site link, to give me what I want." Real researchers don't treat participants with such disdain.

kinkyyorky -> RE: Research Survey (5/9/2014 5:29:05 PM)

Gotto select your gender and as male wasnt an option exited.
