Under a 100 yards the 30-30 is fine, and it handles better than most other guns. I am partial to a lever gun because you never have to pull either the gun or your eyes from the target. I know that goes for a auto loader but they shoot to fast and if it really counts things slow down for me so I shoot more times than I care to. I once shot an animal 4 times before it reacted to the first round.

After that the other two times I qualified I could shoot my natural left handed. Butch If you are going to learn to shoot you should learn to shoot with both hands. Left handed with an M14 could be a little awkward unless it ejects both up and to the right, never fired one. That is one reason I like the pre 70 model 94 it ejects straight up and is easy to use with either hand.

lol... I used to get hot casings down the back of my shirt when on the range when shooting left handed.

lol... when we switched over to M16's the first thing they made us do was plant the stock on our tongues and shoot a burst. We didn't like them they kept jamming with just a small amount of dirt on the locking lugs. In my outfit if your pattern was consistent down to the left you would clear your weapon... put it to your shoulder while the instructor kicked the barrel slamming the stock against the shoulder. That usually stopped the shooter anticipating the recoil because of the pain. If jerking the trigger instead of squeezing you got your trigger finger bruised in the receiver. No jerking with a sore finger. Butch

No jerking with a sore finger. Butch How could the recoil of an M16 get to you? It had only a minutly greater recoil that a .22. You want recoil, I had a 5.5 pound 12 ga, now that could kick. I am assuming the shoulder routine was with the M14.

Yep... I loved that weapon... I liked the old BAR's and M1's as well... Just did not like loading the M1 from the top though. Try shooting a slug out of a choked 10 gauge ... when you are 11 years old...lol. My uncle took me wolf hunting, yes there was a time, and did not realize the shotgun was choked... until I split the barrel and got knocked on my butt. Butch

It might be a difference in when we served or where we did basic (I was in California, after all). "Fast Freddie" was a target on the range that went up and back down in .3 seconds. We needed 36 out of 40 targets to qualify and that bastard caused more than one recycle. It took me seven and a half hours to qualify with the M16- A1A, but I never liked rifles because they were too close to my face (A friend of mine had gotten his face singed by an Norinco AK-47 that jammed a round in the barrel and blew back into his face). Now, with my .40 pistol ... I was always close to perfect (95%). Even with my .50, I used to score 90%. NEVER give Michael a rifle (except maybe a shotgun for "hip" shots and, let's face it, you don't really "aim" a shotgun; you just point it in a general direction LOL). Michael

Michael I always prefered long guns, but it is real hard to carry them concealed so I had to get more accustomed to handguns. I still like revolvers better, I have more faith in them. Loll well since here in aussie we don't all have guns (although it was fun holding and shooting a handgun in the states) Yep if someone broke into my house you better believe in defending myself or my family i would not stop until that person was no longer moving and considering i have a pretty bad temper (i control it) i would probably beat that person to death If you in my house and i haven't invited you, your a threat and i will take you out!!!!!!
