I wouldn't put it past Danny Boy.

I mean it would be quite brilliant, as the Commie Indians get lock jaw because the Washington DC football helmets would be empty or perhaps a featherless yellow and white circle. While officially the mascot is a potato.

Meanwhile all the proud American Indian imagery would be gone but the fans would have their colors, their name, their history.

Meanwhile, the other Indian Groups, the ones without a problem with the name, in fact, many Indian groups who support DC's team (And there are many many many that do) will just have to live without the celebration of the heritage and association they themselves so welcomed and enjoyed.

And think of it, it will set a good example for all the High School and College teams named Braves, Warriors, Chiefs... Away with the Native American symbols and embracing Zulu or Maasai Braves as their new Mascots. Celtic Chieftains anyone? Or how about Samurai and Grecian Warriors? Every vestige of Native American culture can be stripped from Sports, at least in the United States. How about that?

When a high school on a NAVAHO RESERVATION proudly calls themselves "Redskins", it makes a pretty compelling argument that all the race-baiters really need to get a life...

So apparently no one is able to articulate at this time just who these scores and scores of groups and leaders are.

Generally, that might seem to indicate that the claim is bullshit.

Now, polls show that roughly 50% of Native Americans don't give a shit. But that's hardly "support."

I was listening to talk radio on Thursday, and a caller was simply recounting the days the USA paid bounties for dead Indians and would offer $50.00 for a Redskin.

For me, personally, it's pretty hard to white-wash that history. I also think it's kind of demented to try and change and romanticize the name with something else.

I met a bloke at the pub opposite my house tonight who said he didn't care what the 'Redskins' were called. So there you go: this is all about Political Correctness Gone Mad.

Did he happen to mention how long ago this happened? I seriously doubt any of the people who thought that was a good idea are still around today. Unless you are trying to imply that they grew up, bought a football team and named it after people they thought were inferior. Because back then they thought indians were inferior. That's why they killed so many of them. Nowadays most people know better.

Well put Peon, and my sentiments exactly!

They have been called the 'Redskins' since the team became part of the NFL in the 1930's ... and here we are, somewhere around 80 years later ... arguing over the name.

No doubt the Commissioner of the NFL and all the Owners are enjoying the free publicity during the real off season. And no one will remember the discussion, once the games begin again.
