Things I Love About My Body

-- First and foremost, sheer endurance. No matter how poorly I've treated it and what it's weathered, my carcass soldiers on, day in and day out.

-- My hands. I'm endlessly, gratefully amazed at the dexterity that allows me to massage the cat, write, tie ribbons into stunning bows, hold a fork, wield scissors, peck out a text, shampoo my hair, crumple paper, and so much more.

-- The workings of my nerves and muscles. In a flash, I can spot a cup of tea, decide to take a sip, lift it to my lips, and enjoy a mouthful of Darjeeling--without having to think about it.

-- My DNA. Tiny packets of protein orchestrate the symphony of creation, transforming a single cell into an living metropolis with trillions of cells that somehow knew to form bone, blood, brain, and the rest. God only knows--literally--how that all unfolds.

-- The ability of my bones to knit back together after a break.

-- My immune system. Cellular warriors defeat lethal foes and actually learn from experience.

-- My medulla oblongata. It multitasks with a verve my conscious brain can't even imagine, keeping my heart beating and my lungs breathing.

-- My feet. It's a cliche, but they get me where I need to go.

-- My bacteria. Outnumbering my own cells ten to one, they digest my food, block intruders at the gates, and more. (Mind you, my gratitude does not quite extend to the E. coli trespassing in my butt.)

-- My islets of Langerhans. A million one-gram specks sprinkled throughout the pancreas, they churn out the hormones I need to function.

-- My eyes. They're my windows (another cliche, sorry) into a wondrous world.

-- My skin. It holds it all together and brings me a spectrum of sensations, from ice to ecstasy.

Wow! Eleven items, and I've barely scratched the skin. Truly, I am "wonderfully made" (Ps. 139:14)!

DC, is there anything you write that isn't a joy to read? You really are pretty fucking awesome.

...almost as awesome as my hair. Just sayin'. I've got good hair.
