Probably, like me, you had God pumped at you at school from primary school age and, no doubt deliberately, at a time before you'd developed critical faculties. Interesting question, though. Did I ever believe in it all? Perhaps not. It always did seem like a lot of disgusting old bollocks cooked up by primitive, deranged, bearded fruitcakes hundreds of years ago and thousands of miles away, even then. But I wasn't entirely conscious of that feeling, back then.

If only the religionists would leave children alone. Just wait till they're teens, at least, before they start shovelling their wares at them. I'd find them a fair bit easier to respect.

Certainly there are some atheists who have never been theists but the majority of us were once among the faithful.

the majority?
speak for your fucking self mate.
I think the majority of atheists have always been atheists.
Personally I don't know anyone who's flip flopped.

As far as I can tell most god botherers were indoctrinated as children and the stream only flows one way as they grow up and gain critical faculties

Really?

I know very few atheists, and I know a lot, who were not raised in some sort of religion.

what?

If you actually had an understanding

You aren't demonstrating much of an understanding of religion either. Quite the opposite.

I have been where Steel is (without the baiting bullshit), and I know what he means by a deeper understanding. He has an even deeper understanding coming, but he can't know that yet, just as I wouldn't/couldn't have known.

What's true doesn't need help, chatterbox. And as a religious friend of mine says, "You can't shove the dove."

I had atheist parents, and whilst there was some prayers and singing at assembly I would not say it was pumped at me.
My folks told me a few years back that they kept waiting for me to ask to go to sunday school, but I never did, too busy climbing trees and falling off my bike and having fun.

Personally, I was never pressured ,at any age, which I don't think is the case in the US

I recall that Ricky Gervais has compared it to child abuse, I agree

I am not shoving the dove I am flying with it.
If I have no understanding then please explain it to me?
Since you seem to know something please explain how it works in your own words, not a googleathon.
Maybe I will be enlightened to the true way or learn something extraordinary. And your route to God is.... ?

Most atheists were, as children, indoctrinated in some faith tradition.

I don't have a dog in the atheists'-background fight, but my curiosity was piqued. Hence a bit of Googling.

Found an interesting graph at http://www.atheistcensus.com/

Ok, well I can only speak for myself and most of my friends....and most of the UK maybe....but religion was always there and thereabouts but I wouldn't say there was any indoctrination.
It was there if you wanted it but I don't know many people over here for whom it was wrong or bad to not be a believer

I'd hesitate to say that about a whole nation, DTP, but, going from chatterbox's story of the godly soldier and the professor and how it's taken to be "funny" out there by so many people - yep, I'd say punishment for being a non-believer is more acceptable in the USA. God is more likely to come with a firm and righteous punch from a crop-haired, square jawed grunt who is admirably unhampered by the evils of intellect, learning and reason.

If an omnipotent god wanted somebody punched in the face he could do it himself.

If an omniscient god wanted me to know he existed, well he'd have my email address.

Oh, sorry. The US and the UK are very different places in regards to religion.

Humans are funny creatures.

Yep. Can't argue that.
But some are just stupid beyond belief.

quote:

ORIGINAL: chatterbox24
Some have total faith in something greater,

Really??
What is greater than man's achievements?
Not all good I grant you; but on the whole, better than the dark ages and beyond.

quote:

ORIGINAL: chatterbox24
they just have the ability to know.

Know what??
That they are weak and need an ethereal being as a crutch to survive daily life??

quote:

ORIGINAL: chatterbox24
Then you have some that are total absent of it.

And I would say they are often the better person for that absence.

quote:

ORIGINAL: chatterbox24
Each think the other is limited and living in a bubble.

I agree with that.
But it takes all sorts to make a world.
If you wanna live in a bubble, that's your choice.
But don't try to assert your bubble onto other people.

quote:

ORIGINAL: chatterbox24
The God view is open beyond the stars, multiuniverse actually

Proof? Citation?
It is only your perception of such.
I have not seen any proof of either.

quote:

ORIGINAL: chatterbox24
and we are accused of ignorant and uneducated.

Not so much ignorant.... just blinkered and unforgiving in your own personal beliefs.
What's worse is that you slander everyone else with acidic comments who believe something different.
How intolerant.

quote:

ORIGINAL: chatterbox24
The most hysterical thing of all is while we are gifted with the beauty of faith and blind wisdom,

You call that a gift??
I'd call it a blind millstone of not having free thought of your own.
You have to rely on something else to provide your guidance.
Sheeple mentality at its best.

quote:

ORIGINAL: chatterbox24
you all are in white coats making bobbly gook trying to actually prove what we already have a knowing for.

You don't know for certain as you have no proof yourself.
Your 'knowledge' is just blind guesswork at best and nothing whatsoever to back it up.

quote:

ORIGINAL: chatterbox24
If you think about it dim wit you are actually trying to reach God.

Not in a zillion years.
What an obtuse PoV!!

quote:

ORIGINAL: chatterbox24
Ye of little faith.

I have my own faith and it doesn't revolve around an ethereal being in the sky.
Casting aspersions on those that don't follow your particular path is a personal attack.

quote:

ORIGINAL: chatterbox24
Let's do everything possible with our box brains even make weird stuff and blow us out of the water to show how smart we really are!!!!

Believing in a non-existent being isn't a smart thing.
The dark ages of blind faith are long gone with the inquisition of yesteryear.
Some of us have seen the light - the real light where blind faith is deemed ridiculous and inadequate.

How intolerant.

Sorry, CB. For me, the story gave me the biggest hand-to-face moment of this thread so far. It's concocted specifically to make right wing American Christians chortle - but, exactly because it's designed that way, it's only going to reinforce the dislike of right wing American bible-thumpers amongst those who are against them.

Oh I don't know. If I had a professor come in and start preaching atheism to my class I would probably have thought he pretty much got what he deserved. And yes I would be just as annoyed if he suddenly started preaching the gospel. But I have a feeling the reactions from some would be vastly different if it had be presented that way.
